  • It's a TRIP REPORT. LNER Azuma train first class vs standard class Edinburgh to Durham and back.
    I'm comparing LNER First Class with LNER Standard class on the Azuma train.
    I'm also asking whether, as UK trains get more modern and sleek, and full of technology - are the seats getting worse - harder and more uncomfortable?
    We'll look at the First Class seat and service and the Standard Class seat and the "Let's Eat at your seat" experience.
    The LNER Azuma train is built by Hitachi and is a Class 801 used predominantly on the UK East Coast mainline.
    What do you think of LNER First class? What do you think of LNER Standard class? Are the seats (especially in standard) a massive downgrade from the older trains? Comments below, please!
    00:00 Intro and today's TWO challenges
    00:59 LNER Azuma First Class seat review
    04:41 LNER Azuma First Class breakfast service - where's the FULL ENGLISH?

    The Azuma First Class Seats should be the standard in Standard Class and the older version First Class Seats as on the 225 trains should be brought back. Train tickets cost a fortune so we should get our money's worth. Great Vlog very informative!

    I have never had any real reason to catch a train from Berwick upon Tweed but I used to help out at an old folks Day Centre in Dumfries and during the summer months (March to September) we would often take a day trip and one such day trip saw our bus pull up in the car park of the railway station for Berwick upon Tweed and I will always remember the fact that i had reason to go into the railway station itself which is one of those old-fashioned sandstone buildings, very well kept exterior and inside was absolutely immaculate but a real feeling of nostalgia and of yesteryear.
    Such a beautifully well-kept station, i hope that they received an award for their efforts - a real credit to the staff of Berwick upon Tweed and Scotrail.

    Having not been on a train journey fro 20+ years, my wife and I had a short break in London in November 2022. We travelled down from Newcastle on LNER and had a great time. We loved the experience so much, we had further mini-breaks to Edinburgh, Glasgow, London again and Manchester / Liverpool all in 2023. For most, we were on LNER, even travelling to Manchester, via Doncaster again on LNER. We have found the experience perfect .. the seats were never a problem and the ability to actually specify seat numbers when booking is brilliant too. For us, it's 10/10 for LNER
    In January this year we once again went to Edinburgh and had a day trip to Dundee during our stay. The fare for first class on that trip (outbound) was only £10 extra (for the two of us) with a railcard which was too good an offer to refuse. We made use of the first class lounge at Edinburgh, then had a lovely early lunch on board while crossing the Forth Bridge .. perfect !!
    Sadly the return leg would have been about £40 more for first .. so I didn't pick that .. much to my wife's annoyance.
    Regards from Whitley Bay

    Definitely agree with the theory about technological advancement = less comfortable seats. An upgrade in the train shouldn't mean me fearing the new service, yet I often find myself actively avoiding routes with the newer trains and going out of my way to bag an older unit. This isn't how it should be, and its such a poor indictment of the state of our British railways. I'm sure in Europe or the far east, they dont compromise on comfort for a new train.

      Just got back from a trip to Italy which involved a train from Geneva along Lac Leman to Brig on one of the Swiss Railways double deckers. Travelling on the upper deck in 2nd class was comfortable, smooth and virtually silent. The seating was mostly groups of four around tables but there were also some "corner group sofas"! Very spacious, nice wide, shallow staircase up to the top deck. I wouldn't call it flashy or luxurious - more minimalistic, very good build quality and very... Swiss!

    When I tried the Pendolino on a media launch many years I was astonished how cramped were the Standard class seats. A banker (attending the same event) told me the owner had to justify a 'financial case' for these state-of-the-art trainsets. So you correct Roger. However this is the UK. Just look at the products provided for the best classes on Italy's Frecciarossa 1000 or China's Fuxing trainsets.

    I totally agree with you about those seats! That's how I found your site - I wanted to check it wasn't just me being over critical. These are honestly the most uncomfortable seats I've sat on in ANY train anywhere in the world. I just returned from two months backpacking around Asia and even the third class bench seats in 1970s carriages in Thailand and Vietnam are much better to sit on for 3 or 4 hours and they are bare WOOD! Sorry LNER but NEVER again! I'm about to do a 6 day Interrail around the UK and I've decided to shell out the extra 74 Euro for first class as I'll be using quite a few Azumas, unfortunately.

    On a side note, my wife and I are travelling from Edinburgh to London in August and we were almost about to book the standard tickets when I came across your review! First class is £70 more per ticket but for a 4.5 hour journey it seems like it might be worth it.

    I usually travel 1st class.. The new seats don't seem as 'posh' as the old leather ones, however, they are comfortable (esp in recline position). A few days ago, I traveled on two Azuma trains in standard class and I agree, the seats in standard class are very upright and not as comfortable. I however sometimes wonder if First class is really a big enough experience difference to warrant the extra price difference.

    I know what I'm about to say has been said a million times before but having just suffered from a 47 minute delayed, 2.5 hour journey on an LNER Azuma set yesterday, I simply cannot see why anyone would see their seats (and general ride quality and ambience) anything other than just horrible. I literally spent the whole journey squirming about trying to avoid backache and a numb bum and being shaken around laterally, all the while listening to loud rattles and hums etc through the plasticky interior... I mean, the seats were pretty much rock solid with hardly any give in them whatsoever and I could even feel what felt like metal support bars digging into my behind as if what foam there was, had collapsed. It wasn't just "not as good as the 225 and 125 sets that they replaced", it was just straight up, genuinely uncomfortable and unpleasant however you look at it.
    I just don't understand why it's SO hard to provide a relatively pleasant experience for long distance train travel in this country when you pay so much for it. Comfortable seats, warmer, dimmer lights and a couple of extra carriages would be a great start and doesn't seem like rocket science considering that's the way things always were in the past. Surely things like this should evolve over time, not go so far in the opposite direction!?

The time the view really makes a difference on the right is between Newcastle and Edinburgh, which is a relatively short stretch, travelling along the coast. If there are two of you and you book ahead, you could secure a pair of table seats on the right hand side, although one of you will be facing backwards. When you book your ticket on LNER it gives you a seating plan from which to choose your seats.
      Bear in mind the train doesn't arrive into Inverness until after 20.00h, and the most scenic parts are in the second half of the journey. So don't leave it too late in the year or you'll be travelling in the dark!
      A better option in my opinion is to do the journey from Inverness to London, 1st class, with full breakfast, leaving Inverness at 07.55h, arriving London around 16.00h.

    In particular, I think you should do a popularity survey focusing only on the seats. (However, manufacturing costs and freight charges are related, so I think it is necessary to narrow down our wisdom.)

    Mate, the plastic used for the seats actually is stronger than concrete. And no I'm not kidding, the 5mm sheets used are stronger than 18mm of reinforced concrete slabs. The standard class seats are rated unfit for journeys over 60 minutes in Italy. And I recently did London - Montrose in LNER's 1st class and even those seats aren't that comfortable really. Those 7.5 hours (delay) eventually also became quite uncomfortable. I never had a problem with the old seats however.

    Airlines have also been making their seats with thinner cushions and backs to give the impression of being more roomy. It is deeply ironic that home furnishing upholstery becomes ever deeper, yet we are now expected to travel on seats which we would never dream of having in our homes. Traditionally, train seats (even on suburban trains) were heavily sprung or cushioned and were equal to home furniture standards (often better). Thank goodness we still have the chance to ride (and dine) in real First Class comfort thanks to preserved railways and charter trains.

  • @worigami
    @worigami Před rokem

    Hi Roger, a great review and it echoes my sentiments.
    A few times each year I take a return trip on the LNER Azuma from York to Inverness. I'm in agreement about the standard class seats: they are uncomfortable for even relatively short journeys and for 6 hours plus journeys they are back breaking. First class is a little better although I still found it a little uncomfortable after a few hours.
    As shown, the legroom in both classes is exceptional. Of course on a table for four this isn't much help, which is why I opt for the airline or seating for two.
    I was told by LNER that food and drink are "complimentary", so there's no guarantees as to what, if anything, will be on offer. In my experience menus will often change or the stock will be so limited that they've run out if you're further down the carriage pecking order. My last trip back in first class, breakfast options were limited and in short supply, the dish menu was substituted for deli and some of those items were unavailable. I don't factor food into my decision making of first over standard. I'll prep something to take with me.
    I'm travelling again next week, for the return journey by first class was £25 more than the £49 standard ticket. Pretty good value for UK trains so I took that option. For the outbound journey first class was around £60 more than standard so it's going to be an uncomfortable ride up. I have put in a cheeky Seatfrog bid for a first class upgrade. However, in the past every auction has closed early as all the first class tickets have sold out. It's pretty busy from York to Edinburgh and it seems a lot cheaper and enticing than using Cross Country for the same journey.

      @RogEdwardsTV  Před rokem

      Hi Iain. Thanks for such a great comment! British Airways have used the “complementary” argument before as well. It’s a shame service standards are so patchy. Hopefully the strikes will be resolved soon and things can become a bit more consistent. 😀

      @@RogEdwardsTV Having taken that journey since the pre-LNER days you can see that the service is being paired back. My cheeky Seatfrog bid for the journey tomorrow won through so I get to go first class both ways. I'll report back on how that fairs 😉

    • @worigami
      @worigami Před rokem

      I'm glad my bid for first class was successful, this time I found the first class seats fine for the 6.5 hour trip from York to Inverness. The advertised Dine Menu was in force and I managed a sandwich as I joined and a little further ahead, the hot food offering. I enjoyed the egg and tomato sandwich and I think the hot option was asparagus tortellini, which was excellent. Drinks were pretty regular too, every hour or so with tea and coffee and longer intervals for the soft drinks, wine, beer, etc. It was a good trip and worth the small extra uplift for first class.
      Coming back was less fun, flooding meant my train was cancelled and a replacement coach service was in operation from Inverness to Edinburgh. Apparently it has been organised the evening before and was really well organised. I jumped on the direct coach, another was making stops at stations on the way. We left at 7:55 and arrived at Edinburgh at 11:30, 10 to 15 mins of that is circling through the traffic and roadworks to get to the back of Waverley station. I made a dash to the train which was being held and jumped on with 5 mins to spare, I'm not sure others would have made that train but another was running 30 mins later. Back to York in time for my connection and apart from the coach and running about, not too bad. Food only came on board at Newcastle due to the disruption, so not much was on offer.
      These were relatively new coaches, not sure how they compare to National Express or Megabus but I certainly wouldn't want to make a long trip on them again. Leg room was poor there is no head rest. If I hadn't a free seat next to me to stretch out sideways it would have been a horrible trip.

    The azuma first class will NEVER NEVER b as nice and comfortable as the wonderful 125 and the 225.
    The first class in the 125 and the 225 had a proper first class look and feel.
    I especially luvd the leather black seats with the red piping that was in first class on both the 225 and 125 just b4 the change to the Hitachi trains.
    I was looking 4ward to the new trains coming in, I will admit that.
    They looked modern and sleek.
    And the pics of the first class i thought looked modern.
    I did have a sad feeling that the legend that was the 125 was being taken outer service and I also luvd the 225.
    On the 125 I luvd the slam doors.
    I also luvd the buffet car on the 125 and I can remember the buffet being all red back in the late 70s and 80s when I was a small kid.
    Yeah I know these azumas have a buffet but there not a patch on the 125 buffet.
    I have travelled up and down the ECML on the azumas and always in first class and, OMG, I totally miss the 125 and 225 first class.
    I was up in Edinburgh a few weeks back and coming back from Edinburgh I was seated at a single seat and the recline button was broken.
    Fortunately there was plenty other vacant seats in the 3 coaches for the 4 hrs 30 mins journey back to the Cross.
    Even when the seats r working properly in first class the new trains r still uncomfortable 4 sure.
    Also I greatly miss the curtains on the 125 and 225.
    And another thing i recall from when i was a small kid was the yellow slam doors on the 125 on the inside.
    Its just little things like that i remember and the red buffet as i mentioned that make me nostalgic.
    I doubt very much the old trains will ever return to the ECML.
    But OMG how brilliant would it b if they did 😀.

    I am thinking that LNER have been their own worst enemy when it comes to making their 3 menus.
    I don't know if they are just simply trying to please everyone or what.
    But one thing I would definitely say is that they have chosen 3 4-letter words all beginning with the letter D in Dish, Deli and Dine and each are on very similar colured menus so its not particularly easy to tell which is which at first glance which in itself can be very off-putting.
    If they were insisting on having the 3 menus, i think that i would have attempted to colour code the different menus - simply to help people distinguish between them.
    For example one menu red background with white writing, maybe a yellow menu with black writing and finally a white menu with blue writing.
    And I would try to give the menus very different names instead of trying to be too clever for their own good which is something that I think LNER are indeed very guilty of.

      I’m not certain. You definitely can’t tap in and out with a credit card like you can on some of the London network. I think it’s safer to buy a ticket and the associated reserved seat if you can. 😀

    Your very right to point out in the beginning of your video that seats are becoming more uncomfortable as trains are made more modern.
    In the days before the inter city 125.... deltic era.... seats were like the most comfortable arm chair... come the 125.... thin and flat backside killing after Newcastle to King's Cross... 3 hours.... then inter city 225.... no slight change to seats but space was restricted.... come the azuma.... horrible hard seats.... I done my first azuma trip Newcastle to Darlington.... 25 mins... sitting on rock and feeling it.... so goodness knows what Newcastle to London is like ???
    This video is on a good platform to let the rail company's know what we think.... (idiots as if we wouldn't notice but like you mentioned it is the Dft at fault) !!... Not only that.... new trains were put in place on the Glasgow Queen Street to Edinburgh.... so new ....so modern... yet no Air conditioning.... I was first class on a summer day and my short hours journey was absolutely torcher to say the least.

      Thanks for your thoughts, Richard! I hadn’t realised the Class 385s between Edinburgh and Glasgow have no aircon! 🫣 LNER’s standard response to complaints about the seats is to trot out the PR line about them being ergonomically designed for comfort even though they inherited the seats from DFT/Virgin. Maybe one day they’ll do something -even if it’s to install thinker cushioning rather than an entire new set of seats. 🤔

      Thanks, Paul. Most people seem to agree on how uncomfortable the seats are. Hopefully, LNER will do something about them eventually. Cheers for watching. 😀

    I can honestly say that the Azuma is the most nasty and uncomfortable modern train I've ever travelled on in the last 30 years. First class seating is a joke, cramped, uncomfortable and difficult to get in and out of doesn't even express how nasty these carriages are by comparison with the 125 and 225. Two words, nasty and clostrafobic😂...

    • @RogEdwardsTV
      @RogEdwardsTV  Před 9 měsíci

      Agreed! A massive downgrade for seating in both First and Standard. Doesn’t look like they’ll do anything about it on the short term though! 🥲

      Moquette - it’s a heavy duty thick fabric used for seats in transport across the world. It can sometimes feel almost like a carpet. And moquette is the French word for carpet! 😎

    The Fainsa seats in Standard Class are truly dreadful. Transport for Wales have spent £1.9m on getting them removed from their new trains which they inherited from the DfT.

    • @RogEdwardsTV
      @RogEdwardsTV  Před rokem +1

      Interesting to hear about Wales trying to increase comfort levels in this way. I’d hope eventually LNER and GWR might follow suit, but it would be a massive investment!
      Shame DfT made such a poor choice in the first place! 😵‍💫

    I seem to be one of the few that don't have a problem with the Azuma seats. I often think people just like jumping on the bandwagon. I personally like them and feel they are good for posture. Class 700 seats are far worse

    Having been in LNER from Haymarket to Dundee only a couple of days ago. You’re absolutely right those seats are the worst I’ve sat on since I went on the Birmingham Metro. A stone seat would be more comfortable. I was on Avanti up to Haymarket from Birmingham and the seats are far superior to LNER.

    • @RogEdwardsTV
      @RogEdwardsTV  Před 2 lety

      Thanks Christopher! Of course the Avanti trains are being refurbished and getting more modern seats in Standard Class which probably means a downgrade there as well! There aren’t many units in service yet so it’s hard to plan a review trip! 🤔
