I was fortunate to see that production at the Met. It was celebrating Paul Plishka's 25th anniversary with the company.

Look at that cast! What a fantastic way to go out as a composer. Viva Verdi!

Maestro Levine in his part time return to the Met this season has honored this opera as one of the handful he will direct. He expressed his deep admiration for it in a recent interview on PBS's Charlie Rose show in the United States.

Everything in the world is a jest. Man is born to be made a fool of. In his mind, reason is always wavering, everything is a joke! We make each other crazy, all of us. But he who laughs well, he who laughs well has the last laugh.

Nice idea to turn the lights on during this final fugue...in this way the audience becomes part of this music, of this words: "Tutti gabbati!"

Notice how near the end, some the cast point at the well-healed audience. They're part of the joke too. As are we all.

Verdi kind of giving the final finger to the academics by saying Adio with a 7-part fugue. And here Levine, in his prime, in control of everything, especially the harmonic direction. Wish I could have been there. The more recent one with the great Stephanie Blythe and Levine shrunken in a wheelchair was at every turn a hair slower and really not as good (though still probably better than anybody else's).
