An opera about somebody who indulges in lust and is troubled by this. Levine must have been nonplussed by Tannhauser's inner troubles.

Saw Tannhäuser today with James Levine... I have no words to express my feelings. This was my first Wagner and fell 100% in love with him and with Levine. Thank you so much for making it possible for us to experiences such ecstasies even with so many miles between us...

Save your gushing for when the Met uploads this entire performance. But they never do. Schenk's production should be seen in full, considering the array of easily available Euro-trash productions online.

Maestro James Levine, RIP. The following was written years ago for another individual, but I think it is fitting to put it here:
    MELODY
    Dramatic as a piano concerto
    Serene as a harp recital
    Mighty as a symphony
    Intellectual as a string quartet
    Heaven-storming as an opera
    Playful as flute variations
    Majestic as a choral work
Intricate as a Spanish guitar piece
    All-encompassing like a vocal recital
    Melancholy as solo cello music
    Complex as a baroque concerto
But still your melody remains the same.

He was certainly great with Wagner, Verdi, Puccini. I wasn’t too convinced by his Mozart. It’s sad what happened to his reputation.

I think many but not all of the top notch conductors are dead . It is a dying art . " The big five " have the best conductors now . The rest don't pay very well . More people should hear the music of Wagner , Arnold Schoenberg and Tchaikovsky !

Wrong hear you used here! As for good conductors, there are enough good ones: Barenboim, Dudamel, Pappano some examples; but stupidity of pandemic politicians is ruining arts worldwide.

starwarsjunkie7777 Kleiber was a genius of sorts but too unstable to be a music director of anything, let alone a major opera company. His repertory was minimal and his rehearsal demands alone would have scuttled any possibility of working with an American (i.e. unionized) orchestra.

Wagner's only testament was: "Do not let jewish conductors conduct my music". Because his music is pure German. And they broke the testament.

Soso: Excuse Me- but IF Wagner ever said such a stupid statement: The greatest recording of ANY operas was the original-and first- recording of Wagner's Ring by the Jewish Sir Georg Solti. I take my Faith seriously, but remember the playful comment by the Great movie director William Wyler, director of Ben Hur ( and other absolute masterpieces of the film art) " It takes a Jew to tell this story properly"
