I find it impossible not to be overwhelmed by Beethoven's optimism, his faith that the human instinct for truth, freedom and justice must ultimately prevail.

Also all of us should be blessed with either a Florestan or Leonore in our lives. Fidelio has the most loving and devoted couples in all opera.

Such a stately and majestic ending. Fidelio is definitely one of the more underrated operas. It should be played more often, rather than just Leonore III.

Not really underrated. It is always considered among the top 20. For me, it is a great opera - more like a mass! Other famous operas are Eugene Onegin, Don Giovanni and Die Walkure.

Is this true? I hope so. Fidelio is no where near as often performed as it should be. Especially now, in this current world climate. I adore Seiji Ozawa - he conducted the very first concert I ever attended, in St David's Hall, Cardiff, Wales. My dad took me. Martha Argerich performed Rachmaninov's 3rd piano, with the London Symphony Orchestra. I was 11 years old. @@murrayaronson3753

I don't think Fidelio is underrated at all. I have seen it five times in four different productions, twice in Cape Town and three times in London, the last two being in concert at the Royal Albert Hall and Holland Park..
And again, in March 2020 a concert performance in Cape Town had to be cancelled due to Covid lockdown. I dunno about other cities, but if there's been no shortage of appreciation in Cape Town, then that must be repeated throughout the world (Do you know that every Japanese is familiar with 9th Symphony Ode to Joy). Beethoven will never lack followers, the most universal of all composers. His ballet, Creatures of Prometheus contains one of the most famous pieces of romantic music, which transmogrified into the opening movement of his 3rd Symphony, the birth of romanticism.

Although I find all Mozart opera's master pieces and most of Cimarosa's, Paisiello's and Pergolesi's ones ingenious, Beethovens Fidelio is the best ever written. Such a pitty that it is so rarely performed. Suppose that he had written more such jewels....
