  • The term neutral spine is used a lot in yoga, strength training, and especially when people are going through rehabilitation for a spine injury.
    What neutral spine means?
Midway between fully flexed or extended joints
table top after cat cow is an example
Why it’s important/why does it matter? It protects the spine. Some evidence has shown that repetitive movements through the spine is a cause of disc damage. Spending too much time flexed or exercising while overly flexed (rounded spine) can create pressure and stresses on discs. Spending too much time extended or exercising around being to extended (arched) can cause an increased forces in the small joints along the spine.
How neutral spine relates to core stability and how you can use it to balance the muscles around your spine? Co-activation of core muscles allows the use of front, back, and side core muscles at the same time
So how do you find the natural spine? Using a dowel rod and hip hinge is the most common way to find a neutral spine and move more through the hips instead of the spine.

Great question. There are differing points of view with a lot of this stuff. I don't think there is anything wrong with a Jefferson curl for most people. However, for some people with flexion intolerant back pain, it might not be a great idea.
