So gratified to see the internet remembers The Mighty Boosh. When Henry and Jeannie didn't recognise Ol' Gregg I got really concerned that the US was just missing out on this gem of surreal comedy.
Mighty Boosh has always and will always rule! And I'm in the US, lol. Got to see Noel Fielding live a few years back in Chicago. Was awesome. Not sure if you ever saw Noel's other, later show, Luxury Comedy. Worth a watch if you haven't. Takes the surrealism up a notch, and sometimes not in a good way, but def worth a watch if you enjoyed Boosh!
When the guy did the dive on the van, if it was traveling at the same(constant) velocity, he would land in the water, if the van was accelerating, then he'd be behind the van. Velocity transfers to the object, which is why you don't fly backwards when in a plane.
Also, the symbol is the anarchy symbol.
Even with the van traveling at a constant velocity that could still happen depending on wind speed.

also significant air resistance and angle of his dive. Inside airplane air envelope is also travelling at same speeds, but jumping feels funny. Also c.f. vomit comet.
The reason it works on a plane or in a train is that it’s a closed system, as you can not at any velocity guarantee no air resistance in this open system he will move back.

9:51 yes henry that's how it would work, you would lose momentum way faster than the car as you are not accelerating while having friction with the air that would slow you down. the fact that you don't go in the back of the plane is because you don't lose momentum inside as the air around you is "pushed" the same as you by the plane.

9:40 when you jump off of a car or other object moving at a much faster speed than a human can go (ie a plane) then you no longer have anything pushing you forward. And so the drag of the air immediately dominates your acceleration and you decelerate. The deceleration is more pronounced the faster you are going, as drag is dependent on your speed(velocity)
Also because planes are pressurized containers you could jump in place inside the plane and not be sent backwards because wind resistance in the plane is almost zero compared to the outside
yea, but unless the drag is very high (which I doubt it will be from just a car's speed), jumping will still leave you with almost the same velocity in the same direction as the car, which would make what is depicted on the image very unlikely.
@@astadew I don't like to be an "um actually" kinda guy, but in reality, jumping on top of a car going 60-80mph, at the height given from a diving board, would definitely do it. You are correct that simply jumping on a moving car won't really do anything, but the longer an object is in the air, the more and more it will be accelerated negatively. I only speak cause we did a similar problem for my mechanics homework, accounting for linear and quadratic air resistance.
If you add in a decently strong gust of wind, then the cartoon actually becomes quite a bit more realistic.
@@markdatton1348 Yeah, but if the vehicle is moving at a significant enough speed for wind resistance to leave you behind when you jump, then just standing on the top like that the same wind resistance would be knocking you over before you jump.

But Henry is genuinely correct. If you jump straight upwards on a bus that is not accelerating, your horizontal velocity will be the same as the horizontal velocity of the bus.
However, if you are on top of the bus and you jump, there will be a tremendous amount of air resistance that will slow down your horizontal velocity, but probably not to the same degree that is shown in the comic.
If you jump straight up on a bus that is maintaining a constant velocity, you'll land on that same spot (assuming there is no wind)

the diving one... kinda works that way! He'll have drag right? He could even get knocked off the board just from his drag and the fact he's not bolted to it... His feet being on there gives him some friction to help him not be pushed back by the wind so it's not likely if he jumps he'll maintain the same forward momentum since we're not in a vacuum..

@9:57 In a plane the air is moving with you, so if you jump, you jump normally. With the cartoon, the air is not moving with them, so if you jump whilst travelling at (for example) 50mph, you are effectively jumping into a 50mph wind.
