  • Video demonstrating compatibility of late P2 angle gear with early P2 flange. I needed to replace the angle gear on my 02 V70XC but preferred to use a newer angle gear. I removed one from an 07 XC70 at my local wreckyard and was able to confirm that removal and replacement of flange is possible.

Thanks for the video! What are the flange diameters ?

I thought that angle gears are different on 01-02 models and newer models due to different gear ratios. Also the torque for the pinion nut is between 138-147nm if my memory on vida spec is correct

Thank you for this, I have an 01 V70XC and can’t find a decent transfer case anywhere meanwhile there’s plenty of 04

I don’t know but don’t think so. You can look up the part numbers on volvowebstore.com to verify. If possible look for an 07 - they improved the seal design and those are less prone to leakage.

Couldn’t find an 07, just pulled an 05 that was at my local yard here in Denver. That’s defiantly some exhausting work. Now I just got to get her cleaned up and a reseal kit and AG collar sleeve on order.
One more question, how much play can there be in the angle gear?

@@ellefields8878 pleasant removal job, isn’t it? Don’t forget to order and install a new flange seal!

I tore a hernia trying to remove the case so I’m just starting to get back on this project. I’m a little concerned because the 2001 case looks different then the 2004. External dimensions seems to be the same however I’m concerned if they are the same gear ratio. Is there any way to determine this without taking out the other and comparing side by side? I can’t find any information about this.

@@ellefields8878 I can totally see that happening! As I recall all my research suggested that gearing is same for 2001+. It’s just the flange and seal that are a different size.

Also going through the same thing. What were the inside diameters of the flange that accepts the cv joint from the prop shaft? I have an 02 s60 and my flange accepts the 86mm cv joint. How did all this turn out? Did a seal from an 02 fit?

I’m doing the same thing. Do you know the newton meter for the nut holding the flange and preloading the bearing?

If you are talking about the “pinion nut on angle gear” it’s 180nm. I had to install first in order to get good enough purchase to torque it up.
