  • Angle gear installation/replacement: 3 to 4 hours ($250 / $800 / $1,650)
    I installed an angle gear box in a late 1998 Volvo V70 XC (Cross Country). This process is the same for many AWD Volvo cars.

    A tip, you’re meant to use epoxy on the splined sleeve so that they don’t bang together and wear off creating drive failure.

Gracias

    My S60 control arms bolts had more room to fit a 3/8 drive ratchet and 17mm socket. Guess it is a platform difference even though it looks identical to the P80.

    Did your collar gear come right out. Mine did with just some wiggles. There are a lot of horror stories out there about people drilling holes in the side of it and using big pullers to get it out!
    I was surprised to see the flywheel teeth right there. Thinking this is how crud gets splashed up to the collar gear and causes them to fail. When I took out the collar gear, the transmission fluid that came out looked like it had red mud in it, so that is getting a complete flush.
    $65 for a used angle gear? I think you could make a living pulling those and shipping them out! An already pulled one here in Sacramento is $600!!
    Love your videos, keep up the good work!

    Not sure, but i think it would be better to use a piece of wood/plywood/board between the jackstand and and the oilpan----(was not sure what material u were using, looked like a stone material and not covering as much of that area as a larger piece would have?)

    Lil late but couldn't you have just swapped to a FWD trans seal and FWD passenger CV axle, gets rid of the bevel gear sleeve entirely.

    Hey Robert. I love what you do! I have a problem. I have a 2000 XC70. It has the 4speed automatic transmission. I replaced the angle gear sleeve and the seal. Part numbers for the seal were the same for the National and Timken name brand 710740. I’ve replaced it multiple times but it continues to leak. Upon examining the old sleeve with some new seals that I have not installed yet they do not appear to ride tightly on the sleeve. I did replace the O rings that go along with the seal and sleeve. The leak is coming from the transmission side. The seal is no longer available from Volvo. Any thoughts?

    • @RobertDIY

      What is the Volvo part number?

    • @griffzillagarage
      @griffzillagarage Před rokem +1

      @@RobertDIY that’s a great question. I asked myself the same thing. EVERY parts diagram I’ve found doesn’t list it in the callout. It will show it in the diagram/pic, but not identify or give a part number. Im going to swing by the Volvo dealership and ask them directly. I’ll let you know what I discover. Thanks for getting back to me.

    • @RobertDIY

    Hey Robert when changing the fluid in the angle gear do you fill it until fluid starts to come out of the opening and close it up? Or do you need to remove a little bit of the fluid prior to reinstalling the drain/fill plug? Also i know Volvo fluid is recommended but can i use any synthetic 75/90w oil?

    • @RobertDIY
      @RobertDIY  Před 6 lety

      Yes. Yes. Also, that fluid should NEVER need to be changed. Topped off if leaking, changed if some repairs are done. But you are free to double check with some mechanics.

    My v70xc was converted to FWD. I removed the angle gear and the sleeve pulled out easily. There's some minor wear on the splines but the car drives fine in FWD. Do I still need to replace the sleeve even if I plan to continue running it in FWD?

    • @RobertDIY
      @RobertDIY  Před 3 lety

      You need to put something in there to avoid transmission fluid leak.

    Those side bolts look like a shit to get to, i would wonder if putting the bolts in the other way so a nut and washer on the inside would be nicer for future fun.
    Pity they didnt do it that way from new, bad volvo lol.

    It seems like I've got transmission fluid leaking from where the shaft meets the angle gear. I'm a little confused because its transmission fluid and not angle gear oil. Could it be CV axel seals? It seems to be coming from that area above the oil cooler (I have a 99 wagon) and collecting on the silver box at the base of the angle gear. Any ideas?

  • @KeithJenkinsvideos

    if you setup the trans same as a fwd car, wont it seal? Then you use the axle from the front wheel drive car, then can get rid of rear shaft. Let me know if that is correct or not, thanks

    Hopefully quick question: I am strongly assuming bevel or angle gear issue. If I remove JUST the rear drive shaft will it drive in FWD without any issues or do I have to remove more and then seal up some areas. If so, which parts and where can I get this seal? The wagon (2005 xc70) shakes SOMETIMES after accelerating and/or when recovering from a turn, it never does it everytime but if wobbles like a tire is ready to fall off then... another turn or two then nothing.

      Tony M he did in the angle gear, not sure about the walmart tranny fluid.
      I'm doing this same thing on my S60 AWD. There is a special Volvo oil 1161745 for this angle gear. The Tranny fluid, at least for my 2004 Aisin is supposed to meet the 3309 spec. Best deal is Mobil 3309 that I got $69 a case of 12 qts. Dealer price is crazy, Toyota price better.
