  • In April of 2018 SUPboarder's Will Rogers set off with some friends attempting to circumnavigate Menorca, an island in the mediterranean sea. Will tells the story of this fantastic trip in his documentary 'Days of Opportunity', reflecting on why he's so addicted to the challenges of SUP touring & exploring. Its certainly worth finding time to watch how this challenging trip unfolded, so sit back, grab a beer and get inspired for adventure!
    Will's documentary follows him and his 3 friends, Rach Ince, Jen Manning and Ben Sawyer as they make an attempt to circumnavigate Menorca by SUP. This documentary gives us an insight into the challenges the team faced and how they overcame them, and helps us understand why adventure can be so good for us physically and mentally.

    Wow, what a fantastic adventure captured in a really honest and engaging manner. Nice one Will! Really enjoyed joining you vicariously on this big, wet, windy, wonderful paddle around a sunny(?!) Balearic island. Keep on exploring, keep the vids coming and keep enjoying paddling! Thanks for sharing this on CZcams.

    When I go round headlands I always put a rolled up canoe seat on & carry my kayak paddle. The Centre of Gravity is lower & you can power through the difficult waters until you feel more comfortable to stand up.

    A trip like this I am glad you team had a good amount of previous experience. I can relate to dealing with setbacks on a trip that is supposed to be fun that turns into a survival test or a test of comfort zone limits. That is what an adventure and why we seek it I guess. For new comers I think it would be best start out with smaller trip and get comfortable with the touring setup and endurance level. Thanks for sharing this epic adventure.

    Menorca has the most changeable weather of all the Balearic Islands, being the most East it gets strong North and south winds, I have been going there for 40 years and each 2 week holiday at anytime of the year I will windsurf 4 days and mountain bike 4 days and sup the rest, it has a coastal bridal path all the way round the island called Cami de Cavalls

      @robingravestock3227 Před 5 lety +1

      James Hallworth well it depends what you want and how mobile you are, the mountain biking is quite hard as your pretty much cycling on rock, some of the nicer routes are from Mesquida to Fornells and from Es Castell towards Son Bou, the west end of the island is more aggressive rock and access harder, there is a specialized bike shop that does hire in Mahon, paddle boarding depends on the wind direction whether it’s north or south coast, don’t know of any hire places apart from beach concessions, but Es Grau on the north side and south Cala Galdana, best caves are on south side where to stay, depends if you are a beach person or not, Mahon and Es Castell are harbour side so normally a lot to see and stuff going on, Mahon Fiesta is epic and on 7,8,9th sept. Free music and Jaleo horses until 2/3am if you are staying at that time try port Mahon hotel, you will be in the best place got it all with amazing firework displays, hope this helps

    Cool video, just looking at getting a sup board for touring. Come from a sea kayaking expedition background. Just wondering if you planned the trip with the tides, so you wasn’t pushing tide as well?. With sea kayaking we plan carefully with wind and tides so even if it’s wind over tide it’s not as hard to paddle. Check out the Windy app it’s great for conditions and plenty of tidal stream maps online and in imray maps. It could actually be dangerous if you get caught in a 3-4knot tidal stream or race, was just wondering how much you planned?.
    Great mission none the less.
    Cheers mike

      @SUPboardermag  Před 4 lety

      Hi Mike, yes, there was plenty of planning for the trip. Everyone on the trip had come from a sea kayaking, SUP touring or yachting background, so there was good experience and a great planning attitude. As with any expedition, planning is really key. Wind conditions one of the key things we need to consider with SUP....Tide was less of an issue for us on this trip with smaller flows in the med, but we generally needed to paddle all day everyday to make our target distances anyway. Windyy is a really amazing resource I agree! There was a lot of discussions and planning during the trip about when to paddle and when not to paddle to avoid some pretty windy and stormy conditions. For most of the week we didnt think we would make the full circumnavigation due to a big mediterranean storm looming, but by planning around this well in advance, we managed eventually to get the miles in when we could and succeed in our goal. Shows planning does more than keep you safe, it allows you to fulfil your goals. Thanks, Will - SUPboarder Team
