I presume the original idea of government funding media was to make it independent of influence from the likes of big farma etc. If the government pays them they become independent, they aren't influenced by anybodys money. I agree that media makes a mockery of Democracy, but I don't pick and choose which media because it's all the same, including this platform, social media, etc. And as far as taxpayer/ratepayer funding, a lot of things are coming out of our pockets that "the platform" doesn't cover, I.E 8bn in tax evasion, wasted money reversing bi-partisan agreements, needless focus on Te Tiriti, RMA changes to take out Aotearoa's resources, lack of proper water reform, exchange of health for tobacco funding, impacts to the environment that the future generations will need to deal with etc. etc. Media holding politicians to account for what they say and do are the least of your worries in that space, even if they're your favourite politician.

I've been around long enough to see Peters come and go multiple times, and frankly it's anyone's guess why he still has a political career given some of the things he has done (first MMP election coalition swindle should have ended him). But that doesn't make him wrong about everything always, and he is Deputy PM - again, the office must be respected if not the person.

Don’t you think that we need to have an enquiry? I hate that idea an impartial enquiry into the New Zealand New media in this country, and that there needs to be some way of forcing them to bring balance into news items, and that the penalties for clearly bringing unbalanced and often untruthful or half truths to a news. Item needs to be addressed and possibly the board of television New Zealand needs to be replaced.
