You should try playing axis and allies operation Barbarossa. It's a good 2 player game game with very different rules from any real a and a game. The board and rules are online.
That was in 1st edition and it was taken out for some reason, even more baffling is the 5 IPC objective for control of London which missed the cut for 2nd edition.

wasn't there a german national objective for subs in atlantic, and Italian control of the horn of Africa
