Wild to me that people would give this guy grief about how he did each test with each bar. Hes out there digging holes in his yard to help us make a more informed decision. I for one appreciate the time, money, and resources you put into making these videos. Ill be looking at the Piranha Bar.

This is the exact type of tooth bar comparison that I’ve always wanted to see and I really like that you included the factory bucket in your tests! Without owning anything but the stock bucket, I always expected that the Heavy Hitch would be the clear winner based on other reviews I’ve seen, but all of your findings make perfect sense. Thank you for taking the time (and money) to make and share this video for all of us on CZcams! Also, Happy Father’s Day, Brock!

I have the HeavyHitch. The big reason I got it over the others was ease of installation and removal as in my size (48") it is a clamp on solution. It really goes on and off quick and easy. I primarily use it for braking up ground in the wooded areas around my home and large rock removal. It works well for those jobs. Moving loose stone like trap rock or smoothing a surface, I go with the plain bucket.

Thanks for doing these tests, I know the time and effort that went into that was extensive. Not to mention all the diesel fuel used for this….. I have the piranha. You can’t expect it to make a lot of difference. But it depends what you’re using it for, as shown in the video. It’s easier to skim off sod with it than without it. And if that were the only benefit, I’d say that doesn’t justify the cost. But…
I leave mine on most of the time. One thing it does that wasn’t mentioned is protect your factory edge. Helps prevent bending. Helps prevent wear. I’m very happy with it after managing my expectations. I did have to change my back-dragging technique with it on.

I have a HH toothbar and I agree with your assessment from your testing. One thing that I appreciate about it over the stock edge (or other toothbar solutions on the market) is that the length of the teeth makes it like a set of mini-forks which are very useful for utilizing the bucket for picking up and moving large irregular-shaped objects like stumps. The HH toothbar plus bucket hooks plus chains = I can easily move pretty much anything that the loader can lift regardless of weird shapes or oversized dimensions that normally wouldn't actually fit in the bucket itself. I have "real" forks as well, but not having to swap out between the bucket and the fork frame etc for 99% of that kind of stuff is a major win for my weekend warrior projects.

You did a great job with this review, thank you.
A big reason I bought the Heavy Hitch Toothbar several years ago, was to help pry out the multitude of rocks on my property. I know, bad for the loader. It does do better than the factory bucket. But the best tool for rocks is, a 6ft, hand-powered pry bar! The pry bar has tremendous leverage, and can dig out deeply burried slab rocks - that the tractor can't touch.
I do like the HH Toothbar better than stock bucket, for moving logs and brush. And, my bolt-on pallet forks fit right over the HH bar - very convenient. But, I constantly stuggle to keep the HH bar from loosening - and literally falling off. Now, my HH bar - sits in the barn unused...

Great video. This is no doubt the best as far as how they function in common scenarios that many compact tractor owners would use them for. I have a 3046R deluxe cab and use my bucket to, move compost around frequently, and as my compost is on a large concrete slab, a smooth bucket is actually preferable. However, I also use it to move dirt given to me by road crews back to a hole I’m filling in the back of our property, and when scooping dirt that is not on concrete, it seems like a tooth bar would help, though after watching your video, I’m not sure now, though te Pirhana seems like the winner.

I have the Piranha bar for my Kubota B3350, and one of the main reasons i bought was just to strengthen the bucket so i don’t do something thing stupid and bend it up. I also put a medium sized piece of angle along the the top of the bucket to support my square hitch and chain hooks. No worries about bending the bucket now. • @polobbie
    @polobbie Před 10 měsíci +1

I have owned a Kubota B21 for 13 years and finally bought a Piranha tooth bar for it a few years ago. I can't believe the difference it made. I felt like I had a completely different more powerful tractor for loading work. The physics behind the design makes total sense why it was the best. It's all about sharpness and angle of attack. The Piranha has sharp edges throughout coupled with an angled approach of those edges appearing to be about 45 degrees. Imagine trying to cut a chunk of cheese with a knife by forcing the knife edge squarely through the cheese. It would require far more power to do this rather than pushing the knife through at a 45 degree angle. The other tooth bars tested have too much flat leading edges approaching the soil 90 degrees from the tractor's approach direction. The Wicked bar does have jagged edges, but they are very small and too close together such that they undermine their potential to deliver optimal cutting. I think the Piranha bar has the best balanced and simple design. I just purchased a Kubota L47 for larger work and ordered another Piranha of course.

Great video! I agree that The Piranha was the winner. The Heavy Hitch sucks at back dragging. If I was looking at doing a lot of finish work I wouldn't own one. However, I live in the NE Ozarks and the soil here is very rocky and full of roots and stumps. I'm always pulling rocks out of the ground that I can't move by hand. My stock bucket had all sorts of trouble breaking through it to dig. Those teeth and the weird geometry really made a difference. The distinct points that break up the smooth cutting edge allow me to dig into the rocks with narrow points of contact. The stock bucket made digging around here sort of like trying to break through concrete. I suspect that the other teeth might have the same problem the stock bucket had, though without doing a comparison like you've done I can't say for sure. The Heavy Hitch has also been far more effective at getting under stumps than the stock bucket, too. Maybe that's where the Heavy Hitch is best; really rough brute force and ignorance jobs. For any sort of other I think that my stock bucket did better. I do like that Heavy Hitch, though. For the rocky ground I live on it works very well.

I did some internet searching and ended up buying a B Expanded Piranha tooth bar. It's worked great, and won't come off till I have to shovel snow from my driveway this winter.
I cleared an acre of mulberry and ash saplings, that were so thick you couldn't walk threw them. Some that had very large roots, were just cut off at ground level, while many of the younger saplings were pulled out, root and all.
Since then, I have leveled off a pad, removed some big rocks and old concrete, and pushed some dirt around for a neighbors camper site.
I can say, it was well worth the money and works GREAT.

Great comparison! I just happened to find the BXpanded piranha bar and looked like a better setup than HH's and its also considerably cheaper $$

Great video. I have the heavy hitch and agree with what you said about it. I really got mine for digging trees and getting those roots. It did work better than the stock bucket. The taking off and on is a pain and not something I care to do. I also have problems of the screws backing off.
    Great video.

I have the Piranah tooth bar on my L2501 Kubota and I move a lot of gravel. Sometimes it’s hardened after a rain or frozen. The Piranah breaks it up easy. Also works really good for popping small saplings up by the root.

About the placebo effect, you have to remember that a toothbar is a tool and not a magical upgrade that makes a bucket better in all tasks. I bought a Piranha after trying to expand a ditch with a lot of small roots running through it. The stock edge often refused to cut through them. With the toothbar on, it cut through like they weren't there. But for unloading gravel or backdragging the stock bucket is going to be better. That's why easy removal is important.

I was changing out the tooth bar too much and just wound up buying a separate stock bucket. So now I have a stock bucket and a bucket with a tooth bar. So much easier.

Great video, and thanks for doing these tests. I still think I may get one for mine however as the soil up here in NH is very rocky and gravely, so a tooth bar may give it that break up where the stock cutting edge cannot get full contact to cut down.

I have the piranha bar and the heavy hitch bar. The piranha bar is awesome for pealing grass up to save. The heavy hitch is great for moving septic tank lids and concrete. It also adds a few inches to your bucket and it helps if you pick up logs.

Seems like a fair review to me. I have a 1025R which is lighter and less powerful. I feel like a comparison video for the 1025 would find the stock bucket performing worse. That said I do have a bit of buyers remorse after buying the heavy hitch tooth bar. While it does perform much better for some of my bucket tasks, it still has the same drawbacks you mention. I wish this video had been made before I bought mine.

I too have the Piranha toothbar. I purchased mine for two reasons. The first was to protect the factor edge on my bucket. I didn't want to tear up/wear down my factor bucket and have to replace it. I figured a toothbar would help reduce the damage especially when digging and hitting those unforeseen rocks.
The second reason i purchased the Piranha was I wanted something that would cut into brush roots and also push through clay soil. The toothbar has accomplished both of those for me.
So for me, the Piranha has proven itself worth the money and matches the results of your test although I have only the original factory edge to compare it to.
I will say, my EA 55" Grapple has taken over must of the brush removal jobs and the bucket and toothbar is now basically for digging/dirt moving/rock work, which it does well with.
    Thanks for another great video.

Nice comparison Brock! I've got a Skid Steer bucket on my tractor, a Deere C66 and I'm planning to order the serrated edge for that. It looks pretty similar to the BXpanded toothbar, so I'm pretty hopeful. I haven't done much (intentional) digging so far, I've accidentally cut right through the sod in a few places, so maybe the heavier bucket makes a difference.

    • @RockhillfarmYT

My skid steer has a flat edge like that on the bucket. Not quite as sharp as the bxpanded but same idea

To me, the piranha toothbar is the best digging toothbar. The piranha toothbar will keep your bucket lip from bowing therefore, your bucket won't look as if it's attempting to smile when actually it shoud appear to be "mean and lean"🥴. I used my stock bucket for years without any toothbar then noticed my bucket strarting to get a slight bow. After 5 years of bare bucket use, I purchased the piranha toothbar and it's all hisorty from there. I like your comparison. Tractor owners/operators will make their decision after they do some heavy bucket work in rocky dirt and their bare, raw-faced bucket starts to smile b/c it's bowed-up. I considered the "Heavy Hitch" toothbar when I watched TTWT demonstrate use several years ago. Great video; your video is a great demo and well worthwhile, Rockhillfarm. Only b/c I now own the BXpanded toothbar and have used it for numerous dirt, rock, and root projects do I lean towards the BXpanded Piranha toothbar. Thank you for this video. Sorry, you're catching grief from skeptics but I think you did an excellent job showing comparisons. 👍🏽🤠 9/12/23

Nice job on the comparison! With those tasks my heavy hitch tooth bar should get beat. I learned over the months what it’s good for and what it’s not. I learned it’s a specialized tool, when you’re dealing with vines and roots or want extra horizontal capacity for brush or rounds it’s great. When I’m doing any kind of level work or anything like that I stick with the stock edge. I go months at a time without putting it on.

Great Video Brock, as a heavy hitch customer I have to agree with you as well BX is the clear winner. I don't dig that much as you do but if I did Id sell mine too and get the BX Expanded.

This was a great shootout, thanks much! The only test missing was ripping out brush, although more than likely Wicked would be best at that coz of the jagged but dull teeth...so it could grab it and yank it out. In that regard, it would function more like how the Ratchet Rake does (that thing works awesome for that purpose). Yeh, this a great test, and actually I just ordered the piranha bar for clearing out a spot for a new shed.
