  • HOKA SPEEDGOAT 5 full in-depth review. When I took the Speedgoat 5 out for its first run, it was definitely a positive experience. I managed 14 challenging miles out on the stunning Cornish coast path straight out of the box with no complaints. I was a huge fan of the Speedgoat 3 and ran thousands of miles on a big mix of terrain and loved every minute. Unfortunately the same can't be said for the Speedgoat 4, it just didn't fit my foot as well and I didn't feel as stable underfoot. This meant I had high hopes for the new updated Speedgoat 5 and since that first run I've put around 50 miles in the shoe so sit back and find out if I continued to be impressed.
    Really hope you enjoy the video, thanks for watching, we'll see you in the next video and as always - stay safe and keep on running!

    Great review Loyd. Agree with you on the lacing as everything has to be pulled through so much to get a good fit over the top of the foot. I've done 26 miles in mine so far and I do really like them. I think I mentioned the tongue issue after the first run of 16 miles. It kept sliding down meaning the lace was on my foot. I tried a different way of lacing them up today and not one issue at all to report. Basically I took the lace through the tongue section 3 times while using the last eyelet. Sounds a bit overkill but it worked perfectly. I put a vid up earlier trying to show it. I'll be using them on the Howgills trail marathon in May and on the Lakeland 50 in July.

    Great review!! I've been a big fan of the speedgoat 4 and I still luv um! I was a little reluctant on trying on a pair of the 5's since at the time they didn't come in a wide. I finally got a chance to try a pair of 5's on and was sold!!! First thing I did was swap out the 5's laces with the SG4 laces. Not sure what Hoka was thinking with the new laces...terrible!!! I'm on my 4th grand canyon rim-to-rim crossing this year and the 5's seem to be able to take the punishment!

    Great honest review, probably not for me with the lack of overlays and lug depth. I still feel, from witnessing running buddies experience's, there's a mill or 2 missing off the lugs to transition into a dependable shoe in the wetter and colder hilly regions of the world. Look forward to the future reviews 👍.

    • @Run4Adventure
      @Run4Adventure  Před 2 lety +2

      Thanks Gavin, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. It's tricky when it comes to lug depth on a trail shoe that's designed to run on all types of terrain. If you put a deeper lug on the outsole it can sometimes effect how the shoe grips on other surfaces in a negative way. It can also wear down a lot quicker if you are crossing over to tarmac. When you are running on a big mix of terrain in lots of different weather conditions, it's hard to find a trail shoe that will grip everything perfectly 👍

    Great review as always Loyd, just wondering how the uppers are holding out? I have Cascadia 16 which have split on both side at the same point (others I run with have the same issue in the same place) 300 miles in them so not too bad. I replaced them with Peregrine 12's and the uppers are starting to go on these, at the flex points (only 200 miles). Not good when you spend the money for these and the mid sole and sole are like new. Never run in Hoka before but really interested

    I agree with pretty much all of this, Loyd. It's a shame you didn't try the EVO, I think it may possibly have the edge over the SG5. The Matryx upper was excellent, and the lacing was perfect. With that said, the SG5 is still fantastic, but I am intrigued to see how much of an issue the lacing is going to cause over the long-term. It seems like a massive oversight on Hoka's part.

I'm happy with the 5's but I still think the 3's where a bit better and that's the platform the Evo used. I still ❤️ my speedgoat 5. Would say it is comparable to Asics Fuji Lite 2 except the latter has better outsole traction, wear resistance and flexibility than Vibram imo. Speedgoat has so much foam that the jagged rocks cut the sole over time. I've slipped once in the Speedgoat but never in Fuji Lite 2 which i have owned for longer. Overall these 2 pairs are way more superior than big brands Salomon and Timberland that you'll not want another in other brands again.

    Nice looking shoe, but not sure the laces would work for me. Shame, as I'm after something with a lot of cushioning for an Ultra later this year. I've heard that on the Ultra Glide the cushioning squishes down after 50+ miles so loses a lot of its plushness. Have you considered a review of the New Balance Hierro v7? It's meant to be a very good shoe, lighter than the v6, bigger lugs than its predecessor too, so could be a bit of a hidden gem?!

    Love running in the SG5's but my only issue is the wear on the luggs, I've worn some of then down to nothing and only run 85km in them. Not sure if it's the durability of the sole of the type of trails I run on which are hard and dry as I am in Perth Western Australia and it's super hot here at the moment.

    I noticed while you were tightening the laces that you seem to have a relatively low instep/narrow feet and probably are about my sizes (6'1" - 160lbs - US11). My usual complaint about shoes is the latest trend to make forefoot fit more and more "comfortable" in terms of width and toebox volume, often nullifies even the best midfoot lockdown on technical trails. What's your take ?

    • @Run4Adventure
      @Run4Adventure  Před 2 lety

      Your right Massimo, I've got quite a shallow, narrow foot so it can be hard to get a good lock down in some shoes. I totally agree that it seems like shoe brands are catering for wider/deeper foot shapes these days. It can be hard to find a good fit if your foot shape is narrow and shallow 👍
      I tend to find Saucony and Salomon are pretty good for that kind of foot shape. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment it's appreciated 🙏

      Paddy has got it spot on! The Speedgoat does have a little bit more room in the toe box but the Ultra Glide definitely locks down around the midfoot better. Outsole grip is better on the Speedgoats but the Ultra Glide feels a bit more connected and nimble on technical terrain 👍
