A must see for anyone fortunate enough to be in Japan. We must never repeat these same mistakes

The story around the little boys tricycle that you saw was what got me. 😢. Loved Hiroshima and plan taking my son there in 2025.

7:47 it's kind of creepy reading that the first choice of targets was Kyoto. The city was spared bombing as Secretary Stimson had lobbied to remove it from the target list. The city of Kokura was supposed to be the target of the second bomb, but was spared due to bad weather causing Bockscar to divert to Nagasaki instead. Kokura was still heavily bombed during the war, but it was spared the Atomic bomb.
Most major cities in Japan were also heavily bombed (Kyoto and Kanazawa being the two major exceptions), which is why most architecture in the big cities is largely post-WWII. Tokyo itself was basically destroyed and rebuilt twice in the 20th century, the first being the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, and the second after the firebombing campaigns of 1945.

Do they say much about how much radiation is still around in Hiroshima say compared to Tokyo for example? I know it's been almost 80yrs now but it is nuclear and that takes a very long time. Very interesting trip so far. This and the last video was definitely the more sombre parts but important to remember history so we learn from it and don't repeat it.

From what I’ve read the ambient radiation in Hiroshima is now “on-par” with that of an equivalent city anywhere else in the world. In fact the radiation levels reportedly returned to “baseline” 2 weeks post event. This is different from other fallout sites in history eg. Chernobyl because in Hiroshima, the explosion occurred above the city whereas in Chernobyl the radiation leaked into the soil, ground etc
