NOTIFICATION SQUAD: What would you rather have?! Vending machine pizza or Okonomiyaki?! These are the big everyday decisions that make life worth living.
I can't believe it's taken 6 years to make a video on Hiroshima! If you're visiting Japan, I always recommend it along with Tokyo and Kyoto as one of the big three. Particularly Miyajima, which is a pleasant island escape from Japan's hectic urban surroundings. A huge thanks to Ellen for joining me today and on the next few episodes of Journey Across Japan - it should be good fun living vicariously through her reactions to Japan!

Hey Chris! Thanks to this video I added Hiroshima to my trip and now, having returned, it was one of the best places I've been. I had the best ramen and gyoza there, and Miyajima was stunning. Unfortunately they started renovations on the main attraction right after this video so the gate is all covered up, but the shrine itself and the surroundings are amazing. I can also recommend the "folklore" museum to anyone who visits, it's on a quiet street to the southwest. There's some interesting history in there and a great place to just sit and rest a while. Momijidani park is also stunning, although we were so tired that we only saw a bit of it. If/when I return to Japan next, I might need to go there again.

There is no doubt in my mind that you are putting out some of the best travel content on YT, and yet compared to so many others you are so down to earth, and are exactly the same sarcastic British sod you've always been. There's no gloss and overdone production, with complicated production teams (I know this series is slightly different) or crazy drama. it's just one guy, making the best videos he can about his time in Japan, and getting better and better over the years. Dude, your videos remain a breath of fresh air, and are the only ones that I get genuinely excited to watch when they ping up on my phone while I'm at work. Just keep doing what you are doing my man, for it is truly great work!

I had my first visit to Hiroshima last year and knew the Peace Museum was a must-visit, especially as an American. There's no way to properly explain the feeling I had as I went through the museum. I was expecting strong feelings, but I didn't expect to break down as soon as the second room. I was crushed. But I wouldn't ever take it back if I could - it's an essential teachable moment and something everyone in the world should experience once.

@@@grubbybum3614 The topic here is about the A bombings, that caused great human suffering. Not just for the victims but also for many future generations due to the radiation poisoning, What have they done to deserve this? why should the future generations pay? they are just like you and me, or your future children/grandchildren..
Yet I am not surprise to read you comment, I can tell you are an American . Because I have done enough research and read enough opinions on this topic and what I find is that most Americans justify this horrifying crime implying they (Japanese people) deserved it by bringing up other issues/topics. The other issues have place and time for discussion, but why ignore this one? And I haven't justified anything.
Targeting civilian populations with nuclear weapons, for example in Nagasaki, where the bomb exploded above a school, is such an inhuman act. The intentional killing of civilians using nuclear weapons in truth is a war crime. The US also violated the Geneva protocol which prohibits the use of asphyxiating, poisons or other gases, materials or devices in wars. The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki is a war crime, which the United States of America should have been tried for it. But then the winner writes the history.
P.S I am neither a Japanese nor an American, Just someone who questions humanity.

I'd recommend the bar Sam's Cafe 13; it's adorned to the nines in American paraphernalia and once inside, you're presented with a menu that has beers from all around the world. You can't miss it, it has a huge American flag on the outside.

A tip for anybody planning on walking/hiking up Mount Misen(which is worth it), Take the Daishoin Route up/down. The Momiji Dani Route is rough going with parts being very steep.

    • @vocassen
      @vocassen Před 5 lety

Well I went the Omoto route up and Momiji routes down for exactly those reasons. Prefer nature over sights and they delivered, I didn't meet ANY people on the Omoto route! Amazing views, nice and exciting climb. Except for the fact that I was close to dying of thirst and heat and I wondered how many days it would take people to find my body lol.
In the end, just take the ones that fit's you most (they have tags like nature, sights, etc. on the map legends).
There's just one rule to follow: under no circumstances (if physically avoidable) take the lift!

@@vocassen Haha we had the same experience with the lack of hydration and not coming across anybody on the entire hike up. Tons of money to be made for anybody hauling up a couple of coolers with water bottles since there isn't anything when you reach the top, atleast not when we visited.

@@MrGc6asl Hm when I was there I had the impression the Central path was more busy since there were a lot of people. Could have been using the lift though so not sure anymore. Ya totally underestimated the heat and water needed. There was water supplies on a shrine/hut just below the main platform, but since I visited the top first and they only sold some nasty rehydration solution I bought that lol
5 mins later I had proper water. Who would have known.

I really recommend going to the Shukkeien Garden too, e.g. after visiting the Peace Museum. It is a stunning landscape garden within a short walking distance from Hiroshima castle. The castle itself has an interesting exhibition in English in case you are into Japanese history. In the shrine in front of the castle, you can buy English omikuji, which I didn't find in a lot of other places.
On Miyajima, I actually saw a sign saying "take care of your passport, the deer eat paper"... They tried to eat my bag instead. Also, I can recommend going there at high as well as low tide. Both have their own magic. You can walk through and around the torii at low tide and see the size of it from close-up.
