I met Gabor... way back in the 70's and was a sweet and talented man. I lived on Doheny next to Herbie Hancock and Gabor came to a house party that we had... guess it might have been '74 or so...
My cousin was 30 years older than myself, so I called him Uncle. He was the conga player on several albums with Gabor. This was great for me whenever they played the Philly area I was there. His stage name was Hal Gordon. I got to meet Gabor who was a true gentleman.Miss them both.
Thank you, he was a great sideman. I remember him telling my family that he was not fond of being on the road, as he could not even get his clothes laundered in one town due to time restraints. He passed away of a heart attack while living in Los Angeles, his brother, my Uncle Wallace called and asked if I would like to have his equipment as I was also a kit drummer. I of course said yes. The very next day I learned that his apartment was broken into, and all of his instruments were gone. The one thing that I will always have is his music, which will live on forever.
I am Hungarian, and never heard about Gabor Szabo… now I listened his every albums, and he is amazingly good. It is pity, an average Hungarian knows nothing about him.

When I was about 11 or 12 (over 50 years ago) some one at WBNL, a Booneville Indiana radio station I was visiting along with my father, (my father worked there in the 50's) gave me the brand new Gabor Szabo album, "Magical Connection", and I've been a fan ever since. Whoever that guy at WBNL was, - Thank You.

He's sure of his talents, he doesn't look to take the spotlight. To those younger listeners, I don't care WHEN you fall under the magic of Carlos, as long as you do. I picked up my first Gabor Szabo record around 1980. To be honest, I'm 1/4 Hungarian and was mostly just curious as to what another Hungarian guitarist sounded like who actually lived in the old country. I was quite surprised because the stuff he was playing was from a completely different place than what other fusion guys were doing at the time. He was playing mostly acoustic, but it wasn't the typical Oregon or Paul Winter Consort kind of thing. His music was even more introspective. He didn't play like anyone else. He had gotten to this place where he had found his true self and was expressing that, which I think in the end is exactly what all good jazz musicians are striving for.
Hi Bill, you're totally right, Gabor himself said the same too! His vision was to mix different kinds of genres together and create something new. If I had to put a tag on his music (which would be wrong I think) I'd say he played "world music" before anyone else. There are a few interviews with him on YT, if I have some spare time in the future I'll make some English subtitles to them.
I knew Gabor very well. I do feel that Carlos here has given a true testimonial of him.I was devastated when he passed in Hungary. I believe some of his guitars are in a museum there as he is also buried there. I love you Gabby!!!

Szabó was the only one that got big but there was some serious jazz talent in Hungary at the time. Aladár Pege, Elek Bacsik and a bit later on the two saxophone giants mixing traditional folk music with jazz, Mihály Dresch and Mihály Borbély(luckily both of them still alive)

The original Nat King Cole trio was very popular in Hungary in the forties and early fifties.Gabor Szabo,Lajos Kabok and Menyhert Toth formed a trio just like it and played in a place called Paradiso.I heard them there many times.Aftere the failed Hungarian revolution Szabo and Kabok came to the US and Toth vent to Sweden.The rest is history.They were great and we kids loved them.-Menyus -
I can explain Szabo's posture while he plays. Well, an idea from my own experience. The strap lies on the top of his spine, and the vibration is shot down his neural highway. Reverberating through the floor with passing blows from the sound in the air from the amplifiers/band composition. That is a direct path to the sense of self by occupying all his senses with one focus. By himself he creates a space with his sound, that can hold you from all directions. That's so important with music. To use the waves of the sound, and the language it's speaking, to shape an art project & experience beyond what is heard. Many senses are involved. He is so deep in his senses. He's in an instinctual zone. His ear may be fine tuned to familiarity with his sound, but imagine his level of experience with other senses shaped to his personal comfort. That is something only to be attained by such passion for cultivating the spirit of leaving some of the best history I've ever found behind. I would give anything to sit with Gabor, Santana, (don't wanna name any more to detract from the loving subject) and other wizards of their craft just to simply pick their brains. To get a glimpse of their perspective on the musical language and to exchange dialect with them in it. I could go on... I look to the moon often, and remember I am that person I want to consult for such wisdom in these times. That is the one and only perspective I can hold in a long journey, in which I must travel light. This is all for the love in the end. Hopefully all touched by this hold a similar notion somewhere in them.

Another theory on Gabor's playing posture. I think he might be controlling feedback and overall tone by using his body to block or expose the pathway from amps to pick-ups. The hunch and sway might just be part of this technique. Or perhaps he just wants to keep certain angles correct for his hands on strings and frets, and the rest of his body had to adjust to that.

I’ve been a great fan of Gabor’s music since the 70’s when fusion jazz started budding. And, I've known all along that Gabor is among the greatest influences on Carlos. Besides being a great guitarist, Gabor was even greater as a composer/arranger, and his version of Breezin’ was what George Benson played and made famous. And, naturally that's what Benson and Santana jammed on in the late 70's on a TV show hosted by Benson. The vid must be somewhere on CZcams. i consider Gabor to be the link between the trad. jazz guitarists like Wes Montgomery, etc. and the modern latin/blues based fusion guitarist...ala Al DiMeola or Carlos Santana...and a thousand others.
High Contrast blew my mind... I met Bob Krasnow years ago while working for him in Palm Beach, he start Blue Thumb Records and introduced me to Gabor, Phil UpChurch AND Dave Mason... all different but what great players!
I have a Chico Hamilton record that features Gabor. I need to listen to more of his catalogue. He’s so great and his life story would make an incredible movie.
I loved how Carlos expressed himself. I'm not a Musician. But I felt it when Carlos says you got to find your own finger prints. He's definetly the best. And its very humble of him to acknowledge and admire to whom he considers the best. 👏.
His album « sorcerer” for impulse is a very good, recorded live ; Features “conquistadores”, “the beat goes on” and much more beautiful songs. Also check his work with Chico Hamilton and Charles Lloyd (crazy psychedelic jazz).

Gabor Szabo "Baccanal" was one of very first albums I ever bought back in 1967. I've always loved great guitarists, reguardless of genre. In example, another album I bought about same time was Byrds 8 miles high a,bum. (Roger Mcgwinn, 12 string.) So I can easily see Carlos Santana being influenced by Gabor Szabo.

Ufortunately, in his best time it was a silly communism in my country(Hungary) noone knows about him at all,maybe 1% ,Which means he wasn't famous at all where he came from.I feel we have to introduce him for us because this is real value.We don't know about our roots!We have to make a biographical film about him.........And a memorial concert about him ,with Santana.......

Everything about Gabor, to me, is just so soulful and unique. I feel like Guitar's opportunities are unhinged and infinite when I hear his musings.

I loved how Carlos expressed himself. I'm not a Musician. But I felt it when Carlos says you got to find your own finger prints. He's definetly the best. And its very humble of him to acknowledge and admire to whom he considers the best. 👏.

Also check his work with Chico Hamilton and Charles Lloyd (crazy psychedelic jazz).

Thanks Carlos for those words about Gabor Szabo.....he was a true original and is one of my influences too.....(B B King was appreciated, but not an influence like Albert was)
Gabor Szabo "Baccanal" was one of very first albums I ever bought back in 1967. I've always loved great guitarists, reguardless of genre. In example, another album I bought about same time was Byrds 8 miles high a,bum. (Roger Mcgwinn, 12 string.) So I can easily see Carlos Santana being influenced by Gabor Szabo.
This is my absolute favorite album, it is timeless and never fails to bring me deep into the space of the music

gabor szabo hungarian gypsy. influenced by spanish flamenco (gitano) cante jondo music from india with stops. "gypsy" was the term used as 1200 yrs ago it was beleived to come from egypt - maybe: indian diaspora escaping the muzzarab..
He is not playing the guitar. He makes the guitar sing.
Ufortunately, in his best time it was a silly communism in my country(Hungary) noone knows about him at all,maybe 1% ,Which means he wasn't famous at all where he came from.I feel we have to introduce him for us because this is real value.We don't know about our roots!We have to make a biographical film about him.........And a memorial concert about him ,with Santana.......
My mom escaped from Hungary in 1970. I will ask her if she's heard his music. En csak most talaltam.

Breezing was Gabor's opening tune forever. He used to play at the Lighthouse a lot.
