  • Carlos Santana talks with PRS guitar founder, Paul Reed Smith and explores what to look for in a new guitar. He says the best guitars serve your creativity-they feel comfortable (not fussy), like an old t-shirt so a musician can focus on playing from the heart. Carlos salutes Paul for his mastery in guitar making, expressing that because PRS guitars are so solidly built, musicians who play them can draw forth the song from inside themselves with ease.

Carlos is one of the few guitarists in the world who has 'it'. BB, EVH, Clapton, Beck, SRV, Eric Johnson, Slash, and few other household names...That category. You hear him play one note, and you immediately know who's playing. Just listen to that rich, saturated tone. That's purely HIM, no gimmicks. He is a continued inspiration to just forget technique and gadgets, and let my soul pour out through the instrument.

I'm 27, and after saving substantially for years as a kid and being gifted a final X-mas sum of money from my grandfather who passed, my parents put the finishing touches on my PRS savings + upped my dream pacakge. I have had my Custom 24 PRS Artist Package (Tortoise shell finish) since 2007. Once I ordered it I had to wait several months for it to be constructed. Like Santana states, when it arrived, the look, the feel, the smell, it was special. It is an incredibly well built instrument that I keep pushing and pushing, yet more and more beautiful responses come out of it and I learn more of it's capibility as each day passes. It never siezes to amaze me and I grow more fond of it every day. Thanks PRS and all those who put my guitar together! I hope it will be a family heirloom as time passes.

Over the years I've had far too many Guitars to even count. At
    One time I had 43...
And- between the amplifiers and all the other gear that I had I couldn't even walk around my tiny apartment. With sincerity I can say that if you are going to be a working musician or a studio musician without question there are certain guitars that I think you ABSOLUTELY NEED to have! And now I've cut it back a little bit! LOL! So now I have about 20 "or So." Recently I just bought a Paul Reed Smith which would be the one that has been built to be exactly like the one he introduced at the Namm show in 1985. And I have to tell you that from tearing it out of the box, NOW it LOOKS like it might be my NUMBER ONE! BEYOND the RAW BEAUTY of the instrument - the tones and the playability are UNMATCHED and now I UNDERSTAND WHY CARLOS SANTANA plays these guitars because it's just like putting on your favorite old Tee Shirt that you've had for years! So I must say that just like LEO FENDER - PRS got it RIGHT the FIRST TIME! And I'm not even sure if Paul even plays guitar - but I'm assuming that he does?
ALSO- WHEN I SAY that I have had over the years a "FEW" AXES- I'M trying to Convey that I've had the "So Called" ABSOLUTE BEST that money can buy...
Custom Shop Fenders, C S. GIBSONS, There isn't enough room for ALL of them. ( AND- BE SURE TO UNDERSTAND THAT I'm NOT Boasting in ANY WAY. But I'm TRYING to make a POINT here! 47 years of playing, An old "Road Dog!" Toured, Blessed to have been able to work for BGP ( BILL GRAHAM PRESENTS )🙏
I say this NOT IN ANY WAY to DEFILE PEOPLE WHO might not be able or in a position to buy Certain Instruments! I have been Blessed with my career 🙏 and myself have been able to find
( BASICALLY on the "LOOKOUT" ALWAYS for that "SPECIAL SOMETHING!" WHICH MOST PLAYERS DO! PAWNSHOPS ARE GOOD 🤔 ! ) Some Extraordinary Instruments...
Spilling up to 10k & Change.
I'm posting this to say that my New PRS IS One of the best guitars I've EVER HAD THE PLEASURE TO PLAY...
"BANG FOR THE BUCK" QUITE HONESTLY DON'T EVEN HESITATE IF YOU'RE WAVERING IN ANY WAY! The SE is less than 1k...
I got the "FADED BLUE BURST" 💙 AND I get up early just to TOUCH IT! YOU ABSOLUTELY
    💯 % WILL BE BLOWN AWAY 😳
One of the beauties of this guitar is that it doesn't sound like anything else that I've ever played. Nothing like a Stratocaster or Telecaster or Les Paul, a Rickenbacker or a Gretsche or ANYTHING ELSE! It's NOTHING like ANYTHING I've ever played in any way shape or form! So after watching Carlos talk here - he's so correct regarding the playability and just the way it feels in your hands... The neck is absolutely perfect because I was worried about the radius down by the nut? BUT there's no worries THERE! THAT'S the story BROTHERS and SISTERS - IF you're looking for something and I must say that the workmanship is ridiculous and you can look them up and check out the different colors but the mahogany back itself is gorgeous and the Fret work and it has tens on it right now BUT they feel like Eights! SO ALL I can say IS THANK YOU 🙏 PAUL...
WOW! PRETTY MUCH COVERS IT! NOW I'M GOING TO PLAY MY FIDDLE...
KEEP ROCKING AND KEEP PICKING! AND- "IF'N" YA'LL GOT A FEW EXTRA GREENBACKS?
SNATCH ONE UP WHILE YOU CAN...
    YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED
    🤔🤫😉 💯%
✌ ( HELL - YOU JUST MIGHT GET INSPIRED...!!! )

Folks, there is but one way to have an opinion and that is to grab one (any guitar for that matter), plug it in to a few different amps and play it for a bit. In the end you may be surprised at what you end up choosing if you ignore all the stuff people say and just judge for yourself. There is no perfect guitar out there. Lots of really good guitars, but based on your playing ability, ear for sound, style and of course $$$ in your wallet, what makes a good guitar is what works for you. If what you choose brings out the best in you, then you have found a winner, whatever brand and model it may be. Rock on people!

Back before Paul started creating the best guitars on earth, he worked in an Annapolis Md. guitar repair shop, servicing and fine-tuning the best tools for musicians. Never anyone finer. He did several of my instruments back in the day. He wouldn't waste a moment of his time on junk. But he could take a great guitar and make it perfection. No doubt.
P.R.S. has many guitarists who love his work, and respect him for the blessing of having one of his works of art. I was blessed with a couple of these miracle instruments. Paul is a guitar genius. Forever grateful.
I definitely agree with Carlos on his description of Paul's work. These guitars become an extension of you. No need to do anything but connect to the music within you, through a P.R.S. guitar.

I have to say that this interview is extremely enlightening because of how Carlos lays it on the line; if you have the right guitar, it's on you to play it. You can't blame the sound on the guitar, but on either your ability or inability to make music with it. It also really helps that PRS consistently makes such good instruments, and really listens to the musicians he crafts guitars & amps for. Having just watched the 4-part series Paul made with David Grissom for Wildwood, PRS's attention to detail sets a solid standard for the rest of the guitar makers.

I have modest collection and thought what the heck, I’ll add a PRS, nothing too spendy, something mid level, so I picked a used S2 custom 24. The minute I held that guitar in my hands I was okay, I think I get it. While my Strats and Paul’s are still dearly loved, I find myself picking up the S2 more often. I wonder how much of these "experts" or guitarists below have created their own sound and style. You can instantly tell its Santana.

Gottdamn, didn't know Carlos talked that much. Gotta give him his props tho. He's the genius who figured out how to synthesize blues, Spanish and rock music into his own idiom.

Race car bucket seats make you ‘one’ with the car, you almost feel you ARE the car. I think that’s how Santana feels with his guitars and his music.

Everything Carlos Santana said about guitar playing is true
Dimebag Darrell, Eddie Van Halen, Randy Rhoads, Jimi Hendrix , Zakk Wylde and Jeff Hanneman are other examples of playing guitar like gods

You know that annoyed Paul when not once, but twice Carlos called them Paul Reed Guitars. I know once the guitarist/singer from SOJA was holding the guitar wrong during a photo and Paul was like....no, no, no show the headstock logo. Lol. Btw, the Factory is in Stevensville, not Baltimore. Schedule a Factory tour if you are in the area.

I watch old videos of John McLaughlin playing Gibson’s. The double neck fit one. What is constantly doing, tuning , retuning and tuning again. Almost after every song. He now plays PRS. Doesn’t so it any more. I have a Musicman Stingray and that thing stays in tune gig after gig. It’s amazing. I get my Fender bass out and have to tune it all the time. Why???

Just had a '97 custom 22 at my house for a couple weeks. Played well, but was flat sounding, and the "10" top was maybe a 3 if you compared it to a Moonstone Vulcan. I'll stick to my Moonstones.

I own a 2001 PRS Custom 24. Grey/ Black, 10 Top. I also own 8 other guitars. I almost ALWAYS play my PRS before I play my other guitars. Why ? Because it feels good, plays well & sound nice....WHAT'S NOT TO LIKE ?

In 1995, I really wanted the Santana model, it was a lot more $ than the custom 24, so I figured how different can they be. I’m thinking that I should’ve ordered the Santana and not have settled, I had the money. “ NEVER SETTLE”!!!! You’ll be Very Sorry...
    So....
I ordered a custom 24 in 1995 and it wasn’t built until 1996, 9 months later. The specs that I ordered weren’t correct. I ordered a Quilt top, but let that option go, because if I waited, I’d have had no competition date. I didn’t get that money refunded to me. I ordered a wide thick neck and received a thin neck. I really wanted to have my PRS.
Well the guitar was built very well. The neck felt terrible and the pickups had a cold genetic sound.
Over 20 years later I contacted Paul, he said, to send it back so he could see what he could do.
Paul, put new pickups in, new bridge and did a setup.
The guitar is still cold and just sits there.
    Again...
    “ Never Settle” !!!
If I’d bought the Santana, I may have been happy with my PRS.
Now... I just feel sick ever time I go to pick it up or think about it.
It haunts me daily for over 25 years...😫😫😫😫😫😫

Carlos Santana could obviously play any guitar on the market but he's stayed with PRS's since he first started playing them back in the 80's and that's really saying something.
Before PRS, Carlos swapped guitar models and brands every few years because he simply hadn't found his dream guitar... That ended when he started playing his PRS's.
