This cheap Volvo V40 has a secret history, I wish I'd checked it out with a HPi check before I had work done on the car, or even better, before I bought it cheaply at auction! Do you think you can tell the cars true mileage? I obviously didn't! Sometimes life in the motor trade is the easiest, in fact, it rarely is!

I remember my dad once going in to a dealer and enquiring about a car they had on the forecourt. It was advertised as low mileage - showing 25,000 miles. When my dad asked them how that could be true when it had over 280,000 on it when he was driving it as a taxi the month before they got very red faced!

Years ago I used to run a driving school. All the cars had done around 150,000 before the first MOT so we used to sell them before they were three years old. A chap used to come and buy them usually at 5 in the morning or late evening and always paid cash. Alarm bells rang when a chap phoned up and said he had just bought a car from a main dealer with 50k on the clock. He had washed it could just make out our logo where it had slightly etched the glass. When I told him the true mileage he went through the roof. In the end the buyer was investigated by both the police and one of these consumer programmes on TV. I understand he went to prison for a couple of years

Going way back to 1984, and I sold a Metro to a trader with 29,000 on the clock. A nice young lady who had bought it rang me a few weeks later to ask me to verify the mileage, which was showing 9000 miles. Told her no, and she burst into tears. Told her to get in touch with the trader and or trading standards. Never heard anything after that, Hope she nailed him....hard.

I have just handed back my third Mazda6 lease car. All have covered between 140-150k before their first mot. I often wonder if these cars loose a few miles before they find owner number 2. The last ‘19 plate car looked as if it had only done 20k and really was a testament to Mazda although I see they get a real slating from owners on the net. Literally nothing went wrong including flat tyres!

I knew someone years ago that had some rare version of a mk4 Escort RS turbo. At the time normal doggy RS turbos fetched strong money. To not lose value he would disconnect the speedometer (mechanical) for 11 months a year and drive off of knowing the gears and revs for speed. He commuted 85 miles a day but the car showed only about 3000 miles done a year. Servicing was done in time with the service book (looong overdue in the real world) and he sold a very low mileage, expensive car after 5 years. Made me never trust mileage one iota.

I wouldn’t trust anything about that car including the cambelt sticker, putting on the door is weird because they are usually put under the bonnet. Also the shut line where the bonnet meets the bumper is wonky!

    • @john_singh
      @john_singh Před rokem

That sticker comes with the cambelt kit, so can be stuck anywhere the mechanic wants, infact if it was stuck under the bonnet the person selling it to wbac would have removed it, i would assume the cambelt has been done, and the mechanic stuck the sticker on the inside without the owners knowledge, it also ensures that the car does not come back to the owner as it secures the cambelt wont snap unexpectedly raising concern further down the line.

I know a dealer who back before digital displays used to disconnect the speedometer from the gearbox and drive the new cars around on his trade plate. Obviously the buyers would see maybe 10 miles on the clock like any brand new car, but in reality it had probably done more than a thousand. Mind I also know someone who used to do that with their own car back in those days, his 1988 Astra probably had done well over 150k but the clock said 62k. A dealer in around 1991 gave him full book price which was about £4k despite it literally being held together with sticky tape. A few weeks later I was passenger in his brand new car & we drove passed the dealer who had the car on display for £1,200, I’m surprised they even fixed the issues it given they had already lost a fortune on it. That car was still on the road as late as 2000/2001 given it is listed as untaxed with the tax due Aug 2001. I’m surprised it lasted that long to be fair.

However, the mechanic at the garage that I used for decades for the annual service and MOT, used to tell me almost every year that my car was "clocked". Despite it never having had any major wear related work done. I never smoked in the Astra after I bought it because of the state my previous car got in. Smoking every day while driving 15 miles to work a couple of years.

Looked after it should go on for almost ever. My parents had a 145 auto for 30 years, the last car dad bought before he passed away was a V70 auto that's now over 18 years old and with my daughter... it was promised to me but um kept it after he passed as she couldn't bear to part with it until she gave up driving by which time I'd had to get a new car for myself. The V70 has certainly proved more costly to run than the 145 but it currently shows almost no signs of rust despite having been in the wars a few times, an the paintwork still comes up great with a bit of polish (I do that when I can, daughter doesn't have the time and lives 2 hours away from me). Unfortunately these days there are so many fraudsters etc about that I would not buy a car without doing a paid check on it first.

I am buying a Ford Fiesta with 60,000 miles on a 64 plate. It is a cat S which had front damage initially. My son buys mainly damaged Audis and Mercs and repairs them for resale so it didn’t worry me so much as I know what a good job he does.
The Fiesta does actually look great on the outside and pristine on the inside which is great for an 8 year old in a more rare dark red.
I was happy enough to pay a small deposit as they said they will put it through its MOT and do all the repairs and clean the engine bay.
Also there is a warranty of 6 months on major parts.
When I go back after the work is done, I am wondering about mileage and the brakes in general for before I actually pay and take the car.
This video is directing me look at any available history, but not sure on what to look for to analyse brakes through the alloy wheels or see the state of the exhaust.
The car is very cheap for year, almost half price and my son lives over 100 miles away.
This is my venture into buying a possible problem car at risk of being a great or poor buy.
The engine was dusty from paint spraying. A loud screeching noise from a back wheel where the man said it was the brake.
The exhaust had a rattling noise when the engine was just ticking over and finally a rear reflector is broken.

Regarding the ECUs being locked out, I drive a V40, mine is 2013 D2 and my mechanic couldn't see the state of the DPF because for some reason Volvo themselves lock some of the ECUs, the only way to get a full readout is to use their VIDA diagnostic and scan tool. You also have to use VIDA when you code injectors and things like that since Volvo does not allow third party diagnostic tools to access those parametes in the ECU.

I've got a volvo V40 D4 r design 2.0 diesel year 2014, I'm having issues with the EGR, and I think it might be burning oil,
      This a common problem anyone?

I've just recently lost £4k being ripped off with a dodgy car after not doing basic checks , I've been feeling pretty stupid about it too so your video has really helped as, if it can happen to you then it can happen to any of us !
Thanks for the insights and for making me feel less of a Muppet ! 😁

Good to see the alternative to the "I've bought the cheapest X in the UK and made £££".Not great news but could have been worse, at least it was warranted mileage but just goes to prove that they are turning so many cars via BCA/WBAC that some must slip through.. buyer beware.

I have exactly the same car but a year later. Without the mot check not sure I would have suspected such a high mileage. I think the smoke smell and the interior would have put me off but then, I’m not a car dealer, I would have been buying for me.

There isnothing more deceiving than altering the mileage on a car plus it is a criminal offence for which the local authority would definitely take you to court and possibly a prison sentence.

A steep lesson learned for sure. It's long been the case that modern cars wear the miles well so is almost impossible to go off condition alone. I had a mate who sold a 1992 Rover 825 with 178k on it to a local part worn tyre place many moons ago. I just happened to be passing another dealer sum 10 miles away from this tyre place to find this Rover there marked up at a grand more than what my mate sold It for.Out of curiosity I had a look at It and discovered It had been given a haircut and was now showing 78k,when this dealer was Informed he just reduced the price by a grand, but still tried to sell It?

Happens quite a lot even to this day (as proven by this car I guess) I used to quite often lose out on cars at auction then see them up for sale locally with a lot less miles. Would make it much easier to clear a profit if you could make up your own mileage 🙄

Our Volvo 2012 ‘62’ V40 D2 lux ES is fully loaded and in very very clean condition - it was on 181k - drives like it’s on 60k - not all high mileage cars seem like they are high mileage especially if they have been looked after

My V40 with roughly 250k Miles and the same engine and transmission is still running like a dream. There is nothing wrong about buying a high mileage Volvo, if it has a Volvo engine, not a Ford engine. I’ve even done a remap from 150hp to 210hp and it drives perfectly fine.

Volvo's never had "Ford engines" in them, even when Ford owned Volvo. The diesels were from Peugeot and the petrol engines were chain driven units from Mazda.

You can’t lock out the ECU’s. If you use Vida you’ll get access to them and it will tell you that there is a Mila he discrepancy. The only way they can adjust the milage is with VDASH.

I would demand your costs to be reimbursed or threaten legal action?
Surely the fraud can be traced back to the person who committed it through the purchase history?
If they don’t get pursued they keep doing it and others will be caught out?
Good luck with your outcome 👍🏻

Every car trader as been stung with a lemon, if you're busy you don't have time to look at mot history before buying every car because it's to time consuming, but i can say over the last 2 years i've sold we buy any van around 4 vans the oldest being 18 months old and they have never asked if mileage is correct (the mileage was correct on them all) and i have been on BCA site and seen the vans on there stating mileage warranted, so they clearly do it to get more money

I feel your pain... Recently bought a car (Privately).. 70K miles. Limited Service History, but DVLA MOT History and HPI all check clear, Car looked fantastic, and drove brilliantly. No badly stone chipped paint, pockmarked or faded headlight lenses, leather seat bolsters, steering wheel, carpet wear, or cigarette smoke(LOL), so no problems right? or so I thought.... Car went to a specialist for some work and when they investigated the DSG Gearbox for mileage it was closer to £250K miles!!! Moral of the story. Check, check and check again. MOT History Mileage should not be relied upon without supporting DOCUMENTED service history to track it against. HPI Mileage discrepancy is almost a waste of time.. It is far easier to clock a car's mileage now in 2024 that it has ever been.. Buyer be (very, very) aware! It's a sad indictment of the world we live in.
