We made this Samurai Sword in as traditional methods as possible. The fittings were the only thing made from modern material and we found an interesting way to make those as well. The #katana blade is made from Tamahagane from Japan. This build was created by Ilya Alekseyev and filmed and edited by Matt Stagmer (Stalkertron).

Ilya is one of the few, who can unironically say: "I studied the blade.", while holding a katana.

tbh Ilya was the only reason I used to subscribe to that channel, the cnc cutting and grinding the sh*t out of a peice of flat steel to make an edge really isn't interresting after a few times to me
The irony is a Rus building a Sino blade. They lost enough times to the Japanese to understand that they have better swords and equipment.

You can't go wrong watching Ilya doing any build. His pride will not allow him to do less than his best, which makes for a great video.

A metal worker myself, I can confidently declare, that if I had all of this man's equipment, machinery, facilities, and a thousand years, I could stand by an anvil smacking and cursing the entire time and still not create anything nearly half as fine as the blades that he turns out regularly. It's a rare thing for us humans to find what we are truly phenomenal at. I would liken this to Michael Jordan's command of basketball, Freddie Mercury's musical gifts, or Colin McRae's prowess behind the wheel. Simply masterful.

@@monkeking8604 i would like that actually, coz really the artistic aspect of his creation is so so high.... At least in my taste. But i notice he praises some other purely technical guys. I like there work but again they r purely technical and high craftsmanship resorting to taking shortcuts where ever they can. A thing elia doesn't so at all.
What i mean he sort of gave too much credit to folks that r great blades makers but not at all on the artist level.
@@plainnsimplme you're right, I like blades and metal arts, and I like some neat and precise piece, with all the technicality and modern tool. But Ilya's art is different it have soul, he gave soul to his art, not just about precision, the technique he use, the artistry, thought and philosophy behind his art that's in another level. And I love that he always insist on using traditional way in doing his craft. Did you see he engrave his sword? That is high art right there
Let's all just take a moment to appreciate how good Ilya is at smithing. The guy is a master at his craft

I will be one to disagree. He has definitely gotten better over the years, especially with his Japanese stuff, but he is still a ways off. He is also just kind of full of crap.

As someone who's been watching you guys work for about 10 years on Man at Arms, now on That Works; I have to say this might be my favorite build.
I could watch you makin blades and stuff with traditional methods all day. The info you give on the culture and materials is so great. I appreciate you and your respect for tradition. JAPANESE CULTURE ROCKS

Imagine 500 years later, another sword Smith, historians, and archaeologists found this sword. Ilya's name will be remembered as the most legendary sword Smith in our century.

@Marimoo yeah possible, but even the jedi and sith were using normal swords back before the creation of lightsaber, sword are basically artefacts for that kind of generation
i nearly cried when the end product was revealed. absolutely gorgeous work, and it was so much fun watching ilya do the engraving.
Ilya doing traditional katanas is amazing. I'd love to see any of the Sekiro blades from you guys. Kusabimaru, The Mortal Blade, Isshin's Blade, Genichiro's Tachi, there are so many beautiful swords in that game that I'm confident Ilya could do justice.

Honestly I think this may be Ilya's best work yet. The man is an artist with all types of metal and his engraving skills have become little works of art that add so much to the pieces he builds.
I really appreciate the lengths to which they go to show us the traditional forging methods. This isn't just fun, it's educational!

It is always so lovely seeing you make Japanese swords, I can't get enough! I'm (half) Japanese and I'm always heartened when I see new people, especially from our generation, so faithfully recreating a steadily waning tradition of artistan craftsmanship that's over 1000 years old, regardless of where they're from. Your attention to detail, context, art history, and spiritual significance of Japanese smithing doesn't go unnoticed. Excellent work!

I have recently taken up the hobby of learning the japanese art of engraving learning mostly from Ford Hallam's online resources and its a joy to watch you do it. Ilya is such a master craftsman. He's the only smith I've seen on youtube that was already amazing when starting out and has delivered nothing but perfection with his pieces. I love his historical knowledge about the process as well.

My god the preparation that went into this is unreal: obtaining tamahagane, making the design, traditionally hardening the blade (and showing how it curves downwards first and then upwards), the tsuba... this is amazing!
Speaking of the quenching: did holding the blade still affect the quality of the hardening? I know that usually the blade is moved around to avoid bubbles from forming on the surface, but then again, this is a show piece of course, not intended for battle use XD
I watched this video with a big smile, especially when the final result was shown. I know that everyone at the Baltimore Knife and Sword family are great artists, but you, Ilya, are a standout. Sending a big hug from Brazil.

this is great and thanks for the info on the second cut during folding. i've seen a dozen samurai sword making programs from nova to here on youtube, but i have to say none of them ever hinted at anything other then cut in half nearly and fold. a center cut was never shown or even hinted at so thanks you taught me better then pbs has on the issue.
