The polling rate for USB on DS4 is 1/4 that of Bluetooth.
I’m a programmer and I made a mod menu for PS4 and PS5 controllers and was astounded to discover this, as it was obvious on games like Mortal Kombat. Bluetooth inputs would capture 4 times as many frames as wired inputs
I’m using a ps5 controller on pc how can I reduce input delay?
@@Obeygods.92 use a cable and you wont have any input delay
The Bluetooth on ds4 sucks though and had lag for me especially in the summer on extremely sunny days the controller would randomly go crazy and drop Inputs and do random stuff for like 10 to 20 seconds until it sorted it's self out, I bought a usb cable to use it wired and haven't had a problem since and that was a few years ago
I played Cold War an entire year wired on PS4 ;'(
@Fayetteville NC CBD the mods work with any game, for instance, I programmed L2+Square to perfectly time a KD jumper. I could use any button or combination and I could program it for any jumper
That was interesting to learn. On a slightly different note, one thing I’m curious about is that when I look up PS5 games on the PS Store and a PS4 version is available, the store acts as if I can’t buy the PS5 version digitally
Hey I don't know if you're still having this issue, but selecting the three dots next to the price should bring up other versions of the game.
That's weird I'm on ps5 and doesn't happen. Of course older games that came out on ps4 are gonna say ps4 unless they upgraded it for ps5

Also if you play at 30fps you'll have more input lag as it takes more time to show a frame on display during each second because it has to refresh (or repeat) each frame more times before going to the next frame of animation meaning that since 1 second= 1000 milliseconds you'll get
1. 1000/30fps= 33 milliseconds of delay
2. 1000/60fps=16 to 17 milliseconds of delay
Also on top of that delay caused by the amount of fps, there's the additional delay caused by the controller you use, the display you use as some do more image processing than others which causes even more delay (motion interpolation being the biggest offender), also if you're online your connection plays a role (and a big one at that)

For fellow pc users using a ds4 or dual sense with ds4windows you wanna "edit" your controller profile, then go to the "other" tab and there you shall find the polling rate option where you can max it out at 1ms for the least input delay

if you want to further reduce input lag. make sure your TV is set to game mode if you don't have it,
try pc mode.
failing this customise your TV settings to match game mode if you don't know what settings to change Google your TV type followed by the word gaming settings.
What is more interesting is, that cable connection is more reliable in the variance of your input latency. As far as I remember two times (still very low) from measurements I saw
From my perspective, it seems they 'fixed' an issue, so now one is able to have the same input lag when charging the controller!
👏🏻
You're quick to the point and I love it. Some cats would spend a half hour explaining
Thats good info. Ive always assumed it was faster. But i guess the wired connection is only better if you are having interference. When I got my PS5, I quickly noticed that when my controller when near my Bluetooth Motorola baby monitor, both the controller and monitor would lose connection and go into their respective pairing states. Unfortunately I can't use the Bluetooth 😢
I have also noticed that when the microwave is running, connections throughout the house get patchy. I've looked it up and even some government experiments had this problem for 50 years before realizing that the interference they were seeing was just the microwave from the lunch area lol
1 of the few times I'm thankful for recommendations, I'll keep this tip in mind thank you 🙏
Input lag is one thing, interference is another. Since the objective is to have a stable low-lag input, they are both just as important. Bluetooth gets the occasional stutter from interference whereas it doesn't happen over USB. This has been my experience on both the PS4 and PS5.
Agreed. My o.g. PS4 was unplayable for about 2 years due to all the wireless interference. Had to hardwire. PS4 was better, probably due to a better card.
Bluetooth better ps4 controlle lower latency .. i only better playing fps game .
Useful info, thanks! Ill be sure to remember this when I am able to get a ps5 in 2030
I had no idea that was the case. I thought it was the opposite 😂 thank you for the tip! Very good to know 😁
There is a caveat, using wireless can result in inconsistent input latency due to interference. It might make sense if you are into latency consistency (e.g. rhythm games) over getting the lowest possible latency. On my ps4 controller which is aging, the bluetooth connection is very weak and it is very easy to see the input signal latency vary wildly when someone walks pass you.
So while in general wireless should result in lower input latency, the downside is the variance and inconsistency of the latency can be detrimental.
There is also latency added by LCDs and gaming monitors(AV latency).
this happens a lot at tournaments
Input delay probably wouldn't be that big of a deal for most rhythm games (well, the ones with latency adjustment anyways)
I thought there was less input delay with wired connection because when I'm playing rhythm games I'm able to press buttons in quick succession with more consistency. There'd be a section with quick triplets and I have to alternate the buttons between each hand, whereas when I use a wired connection I am able to press all three with the same hand
@@k96man NO! It was a BIG Deal,no matter how many time you can configure input delay its still feel doesnt right(Based on my experience with Many Rythm games ranging from Mobile to PC) as for console though i think what SpacedogD said were the most best/worst case of that type of game genre
It's true that latency isn't noticably different. But the benefit with the cable over wireless is that you will never risk dropping any packets. Which can happen for various reasons. Like being to far away from the console, or having other devices interfere with the signal.
Also with wired you don't have to worry about low battery and having to rush finding a cord in the middle of an online game. Even tho I have a bluetooth dongle for my PC I still played weird for this reason. I also just found out about controller overclocking with PC as well. Also another reason to play weird. Now my PS5 controller has 1ms delay instead of 6ms. I could feel the difference right away.
@@ninjacats200 my ps5 controllers tells me the battery is low 30m before it turns off, so it is not a problem.

Polling/sample rate is different than lag/latency. You'd really need empirical testing to analyze the deterministic and random jitter of both usb and bt to really draw a conclusion.
Indeed, shallow and pedantic yes
Apart from Input latency, there is also AV latency(desynchronization between audio and video).

Sounds like something else is wrong there then
I already new this. It’s also the same with using a wireless controller on pc as well
I hope that helped someone, because I know that from time I first used wireless communication. 4 example sharing songs via Bluetooth and by usb
Y'all are worried about milliseconds of lag? Y'all need to put the controller down and leave the house 💀
Whilst what you say is true, I still wouldn't recommend Bluetooth at least for the PS5.
When measuring average input delay, USB is extremely consistent and seldom deviates from its average. Wireless on the other hand has a higher average, with lots of high peaks. Rocket Science's CZcams channel tested this.
So on PS4 you're effectively making a trade off between responsiveness and consistency. It depends what you play. If you're executing repeated actions and to be as consistent as possible, like say playing Rocket League at a high Rank, you may want to use USB. For a game that doesn't solely rely on mechanics but does benefit from speed like CoD, playing Bluetooth may be best.
On PS5 the polling rate appears to be the same between both input methods, which makes USB a no brainer especially if you're playing at a desk. You get the fastest input and extremely consistent input together.
As a ps5 owner I can confirm it makes no difference if you use the controller wired or Bluetooth both input methods are the same for the system. Who ever did the in-depth analysis for it is spot on . You can play the controllers wired or Bluetooth it wouldn’t make an difference while on PS4 controllers there’s a significant sudden change . I personally would recommend using Bluetooth on the ps5 as it’s more improved compared to PS4 and the input lag is just the same as if you played wired no matter what.
@@NewOldie USB still has an advantage in consistency. I recommend anyone serious into competitive games to use USB.
@@campersruincod6134 i know logically wired should work better but in this case it’s legit no difference ima take the guy who did the math and analysis himself word for it compared to a random who like me still assumed wired is better. My biggest gripe is they stuck with the smooth raised edge thumbs sticks and my fingers slip right off of them. There is a slight gap because right next to the ridge is a depression and they are too smooth. Not good for sweaty hand people. My fingers stay on ps3 controllers better because i grip different and it kind of rolls to edge of thumb a bit when angled or my thumb slips off easier. Ps3 grips are much better. In almost all gaming mice, wired is better than wireless, as bluetooth does have to have error correction and multichannel rejection.
Not true at all about gaming mice. Many youtubers have done latency tests on them now and a number of wireless mice are actually faster then wired. Beardedbob Optimum Tech, Rocket Jump ninja. Hell even Linus tech tips did a video a couple YEARS ago and showed they were Just as fast if not faster.

@@808nemec Can you explain how it was an issue with the gyro? That doesn’t make much sense to me since the gyro is not used to aim in 99% of games.

Can you provide proofs?
you’re wrong about input lag being worse through usb on past gen consoles. Digital Foundry specifically tested this in Uncharted and found that wired usb had a better input lag than wireless bluetooth. Polling rate does not equal overall input lag, it is just a measurement of how many times in an interval does the signal update, it has nothing to do with how fast that signal is received and processed which are also major components of overall input lag.
This is the 3rd of John’s videos that I’ve watched, and I have a question: what does he say at the end? 😂
The Xbox 360 was better on wired connection by design which is probably where PlayStation users are assuming the same but over time wireless has sped up a LOT. There was a 20% decrease in latency from Xbox 360 to Xbox One for example. Same as monitor latency has dropped back from CRT to plasma and then TFT etc. My old Pioneer plasma was awful playing games like COD for example.
The wire has faster input lag in older PS4 controllers models.
It was only the newest models what don't work.

I use the wired connection method when I want to play with headphones due to weird interference in the Bluetooth audio, if I don't have the joystick plugged in I have to remain completely still otherwise when I move even a little I get interference lol
Rocket science made a video of this. I recommend putting it in the description
Thanks so so much it saved me from buying a new one , we the gaming family appreciate you 🙏❤️
input lag on consoles are almost always a low voltage issue. too many things on the same circuit. get a surgeprotector with a long cord or extension cord and plug ps5/ w/e into an outlet on another circuit. presto the bluetooth has enough juice to stay connected!
I actually notice a delay on PS5 when it’s plugged in all the time, it’s not constant but it can be annoying when playing certain games
