Warren Zevon: Ranking the Studio Albums / Personal Thoughts

  • I not only rank the studio albums and discuss the two official live albums, I throw in some trivia, personal thoughts, and gratitude toward one of the most influential - yet underappreciated - artists of the last 50 years. Warren's work has had a profound impact on my life, my sense of humor, and how I see things (probably for better and worse *lol*). I recorded on the 18th anniversary of his passing, 9/3/2021.
(DISCLAIMER: One song title I mention is definitely NSFW. It's mentioned earlier in the video, you'll know it when you hear it)

Zevon is artist you love that your friends mainstream don't understand

I think he was too witty, too sharp for most folks.

Funny you should mention Bad Luck, because a good friend and I have been discussing it this week. I admitted to him I'd rank it higher than what I did back then. I'm really digging the deep tracks on Side 2!

Loved this, Brett. Warren is my favourite singer songwriter. My wife saw him in Glasgow, Scotland, around 1980 when he was supporting Jackson Browne. I saw him in Glasgow around 2000. I agree with you about self titled album being his best but I would put "Bad Luck Streak.." at number 2. Love his cover of Steve Winwood's "Back in the High Life Again" from "Life Will Kill You." Thanks for an entertaining half hour or so.

Thank you for the comments! I'm jealous, Warren would've been at a definite peak in 1980 and to see he & Jackson Browne together must've been an absolute killer show.
Bad Luck Streak is a solid album and it's actually grown on me since this ranking. Several have and I wonder if I'd change it, were I to re-do it? But as it is, I enjoy almost everything he did. Cheers :)

Great ranking Brett. Some very interesting thoughts about the man and his music too. Thankyou.

Thank you for your kind words! I realize my ranking might seem crazy to fellow fans, but music is so subjective. I go based not only on the music itself but how it touches me :)

Uggh, Life’ll Kill Ya, to me, is in the top 5. The album is brilliant, start to finish.

A lot of people enjoy it, and I even stated I felt bad ranking down there. But these are all so subjective and if others rank it on top, that's awesome. I'm glad there are so many different opinions! 👍

Interesting commentary. I'm by no means a completest, but I've always really liked Zevon. I totally agree with your number one pick. That is a fantastic album and beats almost anything else in the singer/songwriter realm from the '70s. I would put The Wind higher if for no other reason than the production is so warm and yet the subject matter so stark. I'll have to find Sentimental Hygiene and Stand In The Fire, they sound seriously interesting.

"Stand in the Fire" is the best rock live album I've ever heard...

My all-time favorite live album is J. Geils Full House, and Stand In The Fire is probably number two. It's a ferocious beast with Zevon at his best.

Self-titled, "Excitable Boy," and "Sentiment Hygiene" are top three for me.
Great countdown... I'm going to have to revisit "My Ride's Here"... Cheers!

Glad I could inspire you to revisit an album! It's been almost a year and I wonder, based on subsequent listens and where I'm at in life, if any of the rankings would change. My top 3 are pretty solid but there's so much great material that the rest can be fluid.

I'll give it another shot when I hold my annual Zevon-A-Thon next week. Every year, I play some of it. I know you & many other people are big fans - WZ himself was very proud of it - and I actually still feel bad about it being last. I don't know why but it's never really stricken a chord with me.

Well, sure. I just love it. I like Life'll kill ya, For my next trick, i'll need a volunteer, I'll slow you down, i could just go on...
I love almost all of the tracks, i recommend the 2020, vinyl release on ship to shore, it sounds great!! And Fistful Of Rain is still one of my favorite songs, there is an live recording of it too around 2001.
