    The child didn't get justice and twenty years isn't long enough. Thank you for sharing.😊

      Yes, it seemed odd to us too - especially with the child. 😔We believe , given Joseph's reputation for eccentricty - which possibly translates into hothead - that the jury did not believe that the murder had been planned out and that it was indeed manslaughter. They believed Charter's second story of an argumnet over some barley springing up between them. However, it was commented several times how successful Joseph's farm was. Charter's much smaller farm, was supporting three grown children and their wives. He was not a very successful farmer and complaints had been put in by his neighbours for his poor animal husbandry. Hmmmm. It was sad that there was not enough evidence to tie him to the murder of younger Joseph.😔

    The Cropton Murders is truly one of the most sad and "horrific," cases that I have ever heard of. I can't begin to comprehend how a jury could justify the verdict that they obviously obtained. I surmised that Charter was going to receive the death penalty and his son-in-law Hardwick would be acquitted. Do you know if Wood had a will? Whatever happened to his farm and finances? Whatever happened to the mother and of Wood's two surviving children? Great investigation, presentation, backstories, illustrations, photos, and videos as well. Take care 🦋

      Great questions! 🙌No mention of a will came up, so not sure which of the remaining two children it would go to. The mother of the two children had died naturally 1-2 years before. The daughter, who was 15 at the time, had been working in service. The youngest - there was no mention of him in the papers, but most likely we are guessing, would have gone to any of his surviving relattions. Joseph's brother lived just down the road. It was stressed repeaetedly in the papers about Joesph's "eccentric ways". It could be he was a bit of a hot head - we think this played into the minds of the jury who returned the manslaughter verdict. Charter had lost absolutely everything for himself and for his family who were thrown out of his farm within months of his arrest. Glad you liked the show. 🙏

    This story reminds me of Belle Gunness, whose career as a serial killer in Indiana USA began shortly after these events took place. She placed ads in newspapers a safe distance away, presenting herself as a "comely widow" with a prosperous farm seeking marriage to a gentleman who had something of his own to bring to the table. She married more than once, but was serially bereaved. And Belle fed her pigs on the cheap as well. I wonder if Robert Wood would have been a match for her. 🐽

      😉Noooooo - we would not want the two of them to hook up together!
      🏈We rarely cover American crime because, we do not have proper access to the materils and really, the Americans do their crime shows so well! But, we made an exception last Fourth of July - we do try to honour all of our viewers on their national days to the best of our ability. We did an episode called "Lethal Ladies of the States" from the take by the newspapers here in the UK. Not sure you would be interested but then link is here: czcams.com/video/KeozAMeVqj4/video.html In addition to honouring our subscribers, we thought it might be interestng for listeners to hear the British papers version of their own crimes. Thank you so much for your support and sharing! 🙏We very much appreciate it!

    So William took a letter addressed to Richard, given to him by Richard, travels 200 miles to post said letter and returns home because? I wonder if William was not so much an accessory after the fact and more a willing participant?

    • @newsofthetimes
      @newsofthetimes  Před 4 měsíci

      We quite agree. And that was the argument of the prosecution - as well as his "work" in the fields with Richard around the time of the murders. Richard, subsequently during the trial, disavowed that testimony stating he had given the contrived letter to a passing traveller. Although William was acquitted legally, he and his family were not acquitted by the community. He came back from the trial to find himself and his family homeless.
