The Rise and Rise of Psychedelics | High Society

  • The UK is experiencing a psychedelic renaissance. Young people in England and Wales are taking three times more LSD than they did five years ago, scientists at top universities are claiming hallucinogens can revolutionise how we treat mental illness and the use of magic mushrooms has been increasing by around 40 percent year on year.
Music festivals are awash with recreational trippers, but we also see how psychedelics have become a new health craze by attending a shamanic magic mushroom ceremony in which 50 people trip out in a London warehouse. Despite studies showing that psychedelics are some of the safest drugs you can take, we meet one person who spilled a bottle of acid on himself and never stopped hallucinating.
What is making this new generation of drug takers so interested in self-transformation? And as the self-help trend grows, what happens when thousands of people start trying to solve their mental health problems themselves by taking powerful hallucinogens in unregulated settings?

Psychedelics are amazing. I was diagnosed with BPD since my teenage. Spent my whole life fighting BPD. Also suffered severe depression and mental disorder. I’m an open minded person. I’ve taken shrooms, LSD and I’m open to many other psychedelic experiences as well as being very interested in all the real, scientific research going into how psychedelics can be helpful. However, the minute I started watching and then finished watching the “shroom ceremony” and the interview with the three woman in white, making the claims they were making, I just wanted to cringe. These are the people giving psychedelics a bad name! Makes me strangely angry as I do worry they’re the ones that hinder research and the move towards them becoming more freely available.

It took me several tries to finish watching the video. It is incredibly infuriating to see these self-proclaimed amateur shamans treating their victims' physical and mental health as if they were vegetables. The number of people in this "ritual" was many times too large. Bad preparation (overbooking, not enough mushrooms, no screening etc.) can easily lead to disaster. if only every 10 freaks out, they are so overwhelmed that a mass psychosis can easily develop. Irresponsible, Greedy, Dangerous. I say that as a convinced supporter of such possibilities and more than 20 years of intensive dealing with the matter. The optical long-term consequences of LSD are not known to me or those around me, and there are a number of world-class researchers and therapists among them…

I'm so angry at them insisting it can cure things like cancer. There are so many cases where cancer patients who could have had a positive outcome die because they are either scared of traditional treatments or can't afford them if they're in a country that doesn't provide free healthcare. If you want to 'treat' your trauma or mental health issues with psychedelics, that's your business, but insisting that it can straight up cure things is dangerous and I think it's taking advantage of desperate people. Not to mention not screening people. I've had a psychotic episode before, not because of drugs or anything and it's scary as hell.

When I was 19 I took shrooms, and it was like I was turned inside out. As a child, I was very extroverted and loved being around people. And after the shrooms, I felt disconnected from everyone and everything around me. I just wanted to alone. I am learning to feel happiness from within myself, not running from myself. From what I've seen and have been told from personal accounts, the worst experiences seem to be because people stupidly take large amounts of them. I've yet to meet someone who took a normal amount and had a really bad experience besides just emotional baggage coming up or weird hallucinations. That being said, I don't think its for everyone and if someone is worried of the effects, then maybe they should try searching for a place that monitors them professionally. What really ruins it for society and people are those that take stupid amounts, and those that take it several times over just for shits and giggles. Its an actual plant medicine that helps you process your traumas and wounds and helps you to really innerstand why you're there, and that you're cared for by the universe. It really helps you come back to yourself.

@Lightman I've known hundreds of people who have taken psychedelics (and met thousands at Burning Man). One thing is abundantly clear when you meet people who use them even rarely: they tend toward less consumptive lifestyles. They just don't like useless crap at the mall or on Amazon as much as most other people do. For that reason, I disagree with you; psychedelics would not be good for capitalism. They might be good for the planet since people would stop the endless, useless consumption like mindless consumer bots, but for capitalism--which obviously spells the doom of our specie's continued existence on this planet if not slowed down really soon--they would be a welcomed disaster.

It gave me a lot of hope that things will be fine, this is the one thing that I heard throughout the trip: Everything is alright. The main reason for the trip was my severe depression and it definitely helped me (although it's not gone). Before all I could do was lay in bed. So my wife and I have been experimenting with LSD every Friday for about 6 months now. No two experiences have been the same but we have had four trips that are unlike the others. We have on these occasions both got ‘lost’ in the experience for a time and when we ‘reset’ and talk about what just happened. We find that we were both experiencing the same thing in the same place. So best I can come up with is wherever we go in our minds is on some level real and our minds are somehow connected. I’m just wondering if anyone else has had experiences like this or where I could find other peoples stories that may be similar ?

Oh my gosh, for a year after my last LSD trips, I couldn’t look at subway tiles or patterns on the floors of my school bathroom or patterns on any wall for that matter, without starting to see fractals, drifting, and distortion that wouldn’t go away for minutes after just looking at said pattern. Luckily for me, I had already had a psychiatrist and he told me it was HPPD, and that it would go away with time. It did, but so went away my desire to use psychedelics, I am so scared to take them now, and it’s unfortunate because I wish I could just take the mental state from LSD and go there from time to time. It’s been years since and I feel there’s so much I can work through with psychedelics that I couldn’t with scores of doctors, therapists, and mental hospitals. I felt good in a way I never had before, mentally, after my experiences with psychedelics, but the side effects just aren’t worth it anymore :(

I’m a huge advocate for psychedelics becoming a mental health resource. I’ve taken many antidepressants. Spoke with many doctors. And nothing helped. Most antidepressants would turn me into a zombie, or make me even sadder. But Lsd never fails to put me in a good mood and help me relax after a long time

13:55 Really sounds like they have no idea what they're actually doing. All of them answering different stuff at the same time, just like when a teacher asks you something you don't know and you have to improvise.
Just gather a bunch of vulnerable people and say you're healing them, that's what they do. When people are going through very sad times in their lives, is fairly easy for them to feel good on these kind of events. The Psychedelics make you experience a different reality (and escape your own) and the organizers create a "good vibes" enviroment, filled with understanding and love. It might be good, but I don't believe it's actualy helping people to solve their issues.

    • @Tristain850

You sound like someone who has never done psychedelics, respectfully. It's not all that simple the way you break it down and anyone who has experience with psychedelics will instantly know this and look at this comment as close minded. Mushrooms in particular have yet to be used to their full potential hence the growing popularity. Mushrooms come in different strains, dosages, methods of taking them, etc... I believe people who are experienced know Mushrooms are more of a tool than a drug at all, and have felt the connectivity to one's self and the universe. They make you look yourself in the face in most cases and access from the inside. I believe in the future mushroom therapy will treat depression among other things and hopefully people will get rid of the pharmaceuticals that are killing people. The tools and instruments and techniques these people use aren't just used to "create good vibes". Energy and vibrations are real and something that can be felt. This can be a powerful experience. Horrible take

    • @batel520
      @batel520 Před 2 lety +21

@@Tristain850 I never said this isn't a powerful experience. I did say it might be good for the person who is experiencing it. About me, yes, I have experience with psychedelics. Also, I think is very important that science starts using these kind of substances in actual treatments for different types mental disorders, such as depression. The thing is, that has to be done in a responsible way, using scientific methodology, just like in any other treatment. I don't feel that the environment portrayed in the video is as serious as it should be. Like I said in the comment above, they sound like they have no idea of what they're actually doing. People are suffering and dying from depression, there are real and serious ways to help these people. Having a good experience with a psychedelic during a day doesn't necessarily mean you're recovering and getting better.

just like with NLP, taking a dose out of a psychoactive substance can show you a different set of lens which you can choose to adopt or not. Ayahuasca can have a drastic effect on how you view the world. Iboga can do that even more... You go there to forgive yourSelf; I'd dare say it has a paranormal , if not supernatural connotation on what's happening at a spiritual level; and this video shows the wrong way of doing a ceremony, with lots of people in a tight space; I did Ayahuasca with 3 people and two facilitators. I experienced the only way I could describe it as what holy men feel their whole lifetimes: Grace.

And one of them keeps going in and out of a mental institution. No fun at all... Big quantities of psychotropics aren't worth risking your sanity..
