  • A playthrough of Namco's 1989 horror-themed platformer for the Nintendo Famicom, Splatterhouse: Wanpaku Graffiti.
This video shows the good ending, achieved by visiting the two secret stages and collecting their orbs. The version I'm playing here has been patched into English.
And if you're interested in the other Splatterhouse games, check out the links to my other playthroughs below!
Wanpaku Graffiti is a liberally adapted spin-off of Namco's original arcade (and later, the PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16) horror classic for the NES, complete with a super deformed ("SD") facelift.
The game is faithful to the original in how it plays - Rick still rocks a possessed hockey mask as he cleaves his way through an army of supernatural monsters and possessed bits of furniture in search of his girlfriend. It focuses on platforming instead of punching everything to death, but the controls feel the same as in the 16-bit versions, and many of the enemies behave in the ways that you remember. The game is much easier than the original game, but it's still not easy. This is a Namco production, after all.
Wanpaku Graffiti's SD style gives the game a much cuter look, much like Kid Dracula gives a softer edge to the Castlevania games, but it still goes all in on the horror tropes. There are tons of references to pop culture horror icons - there are nods to Halloween, Friday the 13th, The Exocist, and Michael Jackson's Thriller, among others.
The graphics are excellent by NES standards, and the music is appropriately creepy, even it none of it is terribly memorable. I do get why this never got a western release - there is still a fair amount of imagery that goes against NOA's guidelines despite the kid-friendly graphic style - but still, it's a shame that this one never got made available to a wider audience. It's a lot of fun, and it's a perfect game to play on Halloween for any NES horror fan. It's one of the best games of its ilk on the system.

Like Kid Dracula did for Castlevania, Wanpaku Graffiti brings Splatterhouse to the NES with kid-friendly imagery and a lot of style. It's an excellent platformer, and a great pick for anyone wanting a good retro game this Halloween.

Isn't it strange we never got these parody style games in the west? Parodius, Kid Dracula, Wanpaku Graffiti. Hell, I'm surprised that we got Mighty Final Fight.

It plays like the original God of War, but it's everything that Splatterhouse isn't.

During the scenes where you get the orbs, pressing a button will make Rick do some pretty juvenile things, and leads to alternate text. It’s nothing too special, but given the less serious nature of this parody, it’s still something.

I strongly disagree. This one controls great. SH 1 and 2 have some of the stiffest, most cumbersome controls known to man.
