The world is full of sound. By now we're used to hearing different things almost constantly, but we also have the choice in modern times to choose what we listen to: podcasts, music, phone calls...you get the picture. But when you think of hearing, you probably don't think about plants. But it turns out plants have the ability to hear sound and respond in ways you wouldn't believe!
Take a watch of this episode of Aspect Science as Tom explores how plants hear sound and what it might mean for ecosystems as a whole!

Thanks for watching! - Věda a technologie
Hey people! Just wanted to say thanks for taking a look at the video! This was a really fun episode to make! I'd really recommend you check out the original research and if you're a podcast fan definitely give the Radiolab episode that inspired this -- Smart Plants -- a listen! I'll put those links in the description up top.
Looking forward to sharing more videos with you!
-- Tom
Man, your editing is pretty good. Though I suggest you work on some of those cuts. They can be incredibly jarring and break the flow of the video.
Am I the only one who slowly turned to their plant and looked at it suspiciously.
Mr. Dr. Genius my sole intention was to induce a fear of plants in peoples minds. Success?
I live in a forest and now I'm just scared
Lol
We must now bow down to our plant overlords
Success
Just a couple videos in and you've definitely earned my subscription. Your production quality is incredible! Your doing a wonderful job and I look forward to seeing more! By the way, came here from. Austin's video. So glad he directed me here.
I'm really glad he directed you here too! Welcome to the Aspect Herd and thank you so much for your kind words!
Ditto!
I'm so glad Austin featured you as one of the creators in his video. It's been a joy binging on your vids please continue because they're amazing
I'm stoked you enjoyed binging on them! I never consider my videos binge-worthy so it really means lot!
Uh, how am I getting this level of entertainment for free?
Everything about this channel is perfect. Sending well wishes your way
When you're famous already please remember me eh? I like you more and LEARN more than my teachers, i think youtube is my REAL school lol....thank you
Haha! Don't worry, I won't! Even IF that ever happens - every subscribers means so much to me, for taking the time and taking the chance on the channel to hit that subscribe button! I appreciate that aha! But stick at it with school - use google to find out the real world applications of what you're learning and soon you'll be loving it again!
@@TommoCarroll nah dude, just think positive because all things start little even universe right? Goodluck we're all here for you
I'll never eat an ear of corn again!
Like Bot haha! Nicely done.
Maybe we should all start whispering “sorry” before we chow down on the salad! 🥗
The fact that you edited this video yourself... damn! This is some Vox quality editing. It's beautiful, fun, and it conveys the exact message it's supposed to. It was a great video in every other aspect too though! Very well structured and developed a very interesting topic! I honestly wouldn't change a thing.
Youthro well that’s about the best damn comment I could hope to receive! Thanks so much for the kind words and encouragement, it really means a lot!
I’m inspired massively by Vox’s science and geography-related videos so that’s a massive compliment!!!
Are there any topics you’d like to see covered/explored on here???
Thanks! :)
You're welcome! Just keep doing videos on what interests you. :)
Well I can do that :) Thanks a lot again! I hope you enjoy all the new videos coming soon too!!!
Yay! Another video from Aspect Science.
Time to *plant* myself in my seat and *listen* to some very *sound* science. ;)
I knew about the caterpillar study, but never knew plants can "hear" water. Very interesting.
Master Therion Awh yeah! The videos are back! (Sorry for the delay!). Beautifully done 😂
Ah nice! Glad to share some new knowledge with you! Really interested to see research on sound pollution because of this stuff!
Master Therion... I've gone dark for a while. You'll see my new account from time to time.
Justin, 42
Justin O'Br... sorry, I mean Like Bot
LOL Why the new account? If you ever "like" one of my comment, you're only proving those trolls right. ;)
:P I belive someone who knows me IRL found me on one of my subscribed channels. Not a huge problem, but I interact with him enough in person and I'd rather have some circles where he's not injected himself.
Like Bot this is a brilliant turn of events. The new name is inspired!
The production quality of your videos absolutely blow me away. I'm surprised you didn't have over 1000 subscribers until a few days ago. Fantastic job!
4:21
Yes, yes I will.
haha, I forgot about that part!
What do you use to edit? The cinematics are breathtaking!
79phew glad you like it! Camera? Sticking with the tried and tested Canon T3i for now, and software-wise: premiere cc and after effects. Hope that helps :)
Aspect Science Thanks.
One of the best YT videos I've ever seen.
That's pretty cool. I have heard about plants responding to damage, infection, trauma etc, by releasing chemicals either to fend off pests or warn other plants so they can defend themselves. Also, I recently saw an interesting video where some people were using a helicopter to sample tree tops for gold particles, so they know where to dig.
oh my god, this is astounding! Great video as usual :) (sorry I'm late, I've recently suscribed to so many good channels with pre-existing content that it takes me time to watch their whole catalogue little by little when I have time)
time to live in the desert.
**Sees cacti and tumbleweeds**
"they can't hear you, they can't hear you, they can't hear you, they can't hear you... "
hahaha, this actually just made me laugh out loud!
@@TommoCarroll lol np
I'm so glad I found this channel 🙆 now I have another person feeding my gross obsession with biology...
Haha! And I'm really glad you did too! Welcome to the Aspect Herd! Well there are worse things to be obsessed with! Hopefully you also like the non-biology related content on this channel too! Any topics you'd like covered?
Aspect Science thanks ^^
I do 😅 but I'd lie if I said that I wouldent ditch physics or chemistry in order to chill with my microscope...
Well mutations and quantum mechanics are great...but I always wondered how octopuses adapt to their environment so well even though they are colour blind...This is odly specific 😅
Have a nice day
This channel deserves like 1 mil subs
Very good Quality content
Keep up with the good work it will pay of :D
Hey ! I’ve seen your video more than 20 times and I’m amazed by all of the musics inside it ! Where did you get them ?
amazing editing with cool music
I go chills
The animation is amazing! And the content is top class
Really happy you like it! Would love for you to subscribe if you haven't, I've got a lot more coming! :)
@@TommoCarroll I subscribed after the first 10 seconds of this video
anastasia carvalho ah that's so good to hear! Thanks so much! Really happy you're along for the ride!
Great work putting the content together as well as you did there bud! Keep it up! Newly subscribed and looking forward to your content!
Oh baby. I love this format. Well done dude
Ah awesome! So glad you like it! Had to take a bit of time away to figure it out - and it will probably change a little bit more again, but the fact you noticed the change and liked it is so great! I need to check out your most recent videos! Expect and onslaught of comments from me soon!
That was a diggity dope vid dawg. For real. I did my “learned something new today” head nod at the end.
This is beautifully edited on to of being incredibly interesting. Thank you for your effort!
Hey Alexis, I really appreciate you taking the time to say that! No problem at all, I enjoy sharing the knowledge with people :)
Looking forward to growing the community with people like you!
Our bio teacher had already told this to us , she had also told that trees could also talk to each other
Science with Smartinator Plus ah yes the whole internet of plants is a plan for a future episode! There’s some great videos of it on CZcams already though if you’re interested in learning more!
Aspect Science wow , it's fascinating
That caterpillar recording was quality ASMR
haha, you're so right!
The first video I watched of yours was Yellowstone. Then this one and I subscribed. You really have great videos. You do an excellent job!
You videos are so great, I can tell you spend lots of time and effort making these. I tell all of my friends about your channel and I learn so much!
Raven really happy you enjoy the videos! It does take a good amount of time and effort but hopefully will lead to a nice community growing around here! Thanks for sharing our videos, that’s always appreciated!!!
When you feel that nobody is listening to you, remember that plants are good listeners ;D
A, that's some cool ass shit you said. Blew my freaking mind yo✌
I'm never going to forget that. Whenever I'm feeling alone and suicidal, I'm going to talk to plants. I want to thank you for changing my life. 🙏
May whatever God you believe in make your cup runneth over.
Nice, I'm gathering topics for a research paper. This topic sounds interesting.
These videos are brilliant! So interesting and well made.
Shirin Rose really happy you’re enjoying them! If there’s any topics you’d like me to dig into feel free to let me know!
I hope plants spare me when their revolution comes, I'll tell them I love bacon
Just don't mention the salad you had last night!
hey..i feel that changing the background music after some scenes is really creating like 2 seperate pieces of information in my head while it should be a single piece of information...kind of distarcts mee
Wow nicely done video. Good job mate!
Thanks a lot! :)
I am learning a lot yo your videos, that's why I adore you so much.
has anyone here heard of the 1967 album Mort Garson’s Plantasia? its supposed to be french electro-pop music made for plants and plant lovers. not sure how much scientific research went into how it effects plants but it seems really interesting!
Man... PLANTS ARE AWESOME
I know, right!? When I discovered how awesome plants actually are years ago no one would believe me haha!
This is great.
Wow, this was excellent!
Hey TurnTableStudios, thanks so much! Really happy you like the video!!!
Yessssss! My life could always use more science! You earned another sub! Also You should check out the book "The Secret Life Of Trees" by Peter Wohlleben! He goes into great detail about the topics you covered here!
Added to the list of books to read! Sounds fascinating!
Awesome video mate!
Cinedojo aha! Thanks Matt! And hey, great video on your channel today ;)
do you edit your own videos? they are absolutely amazing!!!
Lil Pump’s Little Pump thanks a lot! Glad you like them! I do indeed, learning more with each new video!
Very insightful and informative content, also you seem like a genuinly curious person which makes it really watchable but the music is imo a little too dramatic same with the editing although i like it very much. Maybe its just me but it feels a little like verge science which because of the sensational music and i think it doesnt need that, maybe its worth considering. Anyways, Love the content and I'll certainly keep watching!
Thanks for the feedback, it's always appreciated! I'm trying to strike a balance between knowledge and stimulating emotions, just because I like the idea of getting people to think about things in a different way than if they would from say reading it out of a textbook. I take your point though! I'd love to hear your thoughts about the music in the astronaut video - I went for a different style which still had some dramatic elements but maybe less than this?
I've heard the smarty pants episode it was great!
Glad you have! Happy to find a fellow radiolab listener! I've listened to that episode maybe 5 times haha
Love the video man!
John Lightfoot thanks a lot John! Tried out a bunch of new stuff with this one, hopefully you enjoy the new-ish look!
Amazing video!
A Person thanks a lot! Really happy you like it!
If you haven’t, feel free to subscribe! A lot more to come :)
The Walls have Ears and so do the Trees.
What insightfully meticulous attention to plants! Have you ever heard of your minds which talk so noisily all the days? Well try to read the book ”Science of thought” you will get more Insights and be watchful of your minds! So more interesting!
An amazing video, thankfully!
So interesting
Qualquer Um really glad you like it! Are you a big science fan?
Very interesting stuff, but we should probably be careful with the language. Many plants grow toward or away from light as well, but I wouldn’t want to lead people to think plants can see. It’s analogous to sight, sure, but it’s also vastly different.
To be fair, maybe this point is covered in the research or the podcast you linked. Either way, great content!
Very good point, and actually I probably should have made that clear in the video. You're actually correct, they do talk about it in the podcast! But an interesting point the researcher made was that maybe it's good to anthropomorphise things like this as it spawns creative thinking/open-minded thinking and then leads to people actually researching whether things like this are possible! Interesting point I thought!
We did an experiment by playing different music styles to see which it would like, looks like they like all like country music.
Ah nice! Haha, that's an interesting result! Come to think of it, I remember reading something about that whole idea of music and plants - might have to go an reinvestigate to remind myself what it was! How did you experiment go?
Aspect Science it went well it was our summer vacation project
Love you, and your videos, bye 🍕♥️
Why bye? How about "Hello!" :) It's a hi from me! :)
Bro your face is too close to the camra, feel like you're giving me a death stare
Great videos tho!
That's the exact emotion I like to put into people's minds...I mean, I'm talking about plants, what other thought than "why is this guy giving me the death stare?" is appropriate 😅 (I agree, my face got a bit too personal with the lens in this one!)
😂😂😂
Nobody:
Vegans: This can’t be true!!!
interesting!
Glad you like it sebastion! Did you know about these abilities?
Aspect Science I didn't know until now but I've always wondered if sounds affect plants 😄
What was the reason you changed your logo ??
Science with Smartinator Plus it seemed like a change from the green was needed! The green wasn’t really feeling great to me anymore! What do you think?
Science with Smartinator Plus it seemed like a change from the green was needed! The green wasn’t really feeling great to me anymore! What do you think?
hey...before this vid was published...all your videos had a very consistent thumbnail....such as the clean titles...beautiful background images and the overall look...but that doesnt seem to be reflecting from this video...came here when austin recommended you and it is really fun to watch your videos as i have been interested in different facts (or knowledge). but still i would like to say that the thumbnail you have for this one stands out of the crowd..like there's infocus videos..then there are those with a title and then there's this....
sorry for being nitty-gritty though
What makes a Venus flytrap snap?
0:59 New ASMR channel? Hahahha
Great. So now, not only do I need to worry about using he or she when talking to a person in case I offend them, now I have to worry what I say to plants to? What a world...
Do you ever visit America?
2 people didn't find that pun funny lol
Haha, their loss!
I think so too haha
Lol so can a blunt hear you?
First
Awh yeah!
So did you ever name your plant? And do you talk to him/her? 🤔
YES! Aha, but it might be appearing in an episode...so maybe I should refrain from sharing any spoilers....haha! I don't - after a tragic incident of a plant I used to talk to sadly drying up (hmm, how did that happen...) I can't face forming a bond with another house plant 😅
Aspect Science Hey, I killed a cactus once. 🤷 From then on, I've stuck to plastic ones. 🤦
Ellen Rofkar some how I think I’d manage to kill even a plastic one...😂
Aspect Science I feel your pain. Even my plastic ones don't look that great. 🤷🤦🤣
BUT ITS NOT A JOKE OR A PUN!!! ):
I'd consider becoming vegan if only there were a plant that tastes like chicken! ;)
Gravijta haha oh yes! I was wondering how long it would be before receiving an infamous chicken-related comment from you; You’ve made me a happy man 😂
Not to be mean but I noticed that your teeth are not aligned with your upper lip
Oh baby. I love this format. Well done dude
Harshil Patel why do I see you everywhere 😅
