That’s why I’m glad my home town of Winnipeg was so broke back in that era. It had the similar plans of paving over huge areas of the city to make space for car centric development, but ran out of money quick. So we still have some older areas with European style density and road networks.
Just a shame we killed our trolley the same way most other towns did as well.

We had a similar situation here (Lüneburg, Germany): The city was basically not affected by the war, so there was never a massive reconstruction. Then came the car hype and the plan was to tear down the entire center to make a "modern city" - causing massive opposition, because here was kept, what all the other major cities in Northern Germany had lost. This skyrocketed the idea to preserve things and directly let to making the city center car free (because it sucked to drive there).

As a Winnipegger maybe you should be more worried about your record 53 homicides in 2022 than the streetcar that was "killed".

Maybe the Texas oil was a curse in the guise of a blessing? The oil crisis hit harder in nations without domestic petroleum.

AmsterdamThe Netherlands: the "stop de kindermoord" protest was a more A'dam thing [combined with protest to demolish whole neighborhoods for roads], while the oil-crisis hit all of the Netherlands; so looking outside the capital the oil crisis influence was more prevalent..

Too bad we weren’t as lucky. The problem is now so pervasive and endemic in American society that it would take WWII level mobilization, times 10, to undo the damage. With our current incrementalist approach, it will take decades, if not centuries, to undo the damage. I mean, this is why @NotJustBikes left for the Netherlands in the first place.

It cannot be done from today to tomorrow, but currently the US is spending billions every year to just maintain the existing roas infrastructure. There is so much possibility to take some of that same money and instead of repairing the next 4 lane stroad, it can be taken to re-build them into separate bike, pedestrian and roads.
      It's a process, but it's a possible one.

    • @ScramJett

@@lolasonne1772 that would require something we don’t have: a political system that responds to the needs of the people. What we do have is a political system that responds to the wishes and desires of the billionaire elites, especially in the fossil fuel and automotive industries.

Seemingly Amsterdam has benefitted by need to react to severe congestion, rather than be accredited for any overall master plan. Improvement over time surely guides future decisions, but that happened over time versus a real master plan?

A lot of times people will try to draw direct comparisons between the Netherlands and the US. But does the Netherlands have issues with street racing and street takeovers by motorists? I don't see a comparison to be honest until the motorists in the US are held accountable for these types of behaviors.
