- Module 1 of the Networking Fundamentals course will illustrate the core of networking: How data moves through the Internet. The foundation of that is understanding the OSI model.
But this isn't about mere memorization, instead we are going to look at the underlying goals of each layer of the OSI model, and how it contributes to the over all goal of networking: Moving data between hosts.
Before watching this video, watch the first videos in the series:

*Full Course Status: Wait and See.*
Hopefully you've come to realize that I put _a lot_ of effort into the content I create. I'm not a course creator that will simply turn on the screen recording and ramble, then call that teaching. I meticulously plan _every_ module and lesson to _maximize the learning and value_ for the student.
To that end, it takes me a while to put together courses. If I'm going to dedicate the time, resources, and energy to putting this full course together, I need to know that there is enough interest in the full course. I'm rating that by how wide a reach this series achieves.
*If you are interested in seeing the full course developed, then the best way to bring that to fruition is to spread the word about this content* . By itself it already conveys _a lot_ of value. So sharing even just the 7 lessons (13 videos) in this series will surely help whoever you share it with.
Plus ... many online communities would greatly benefit from these videos. Think of all the Internet points you could acquire if you shared this series (karma, likes, follows, etc.) 😉

@@sgcatr Thank you =)
bro is this course still under construction ?
You, sir, are a networking hero. This requires some serious skills to be able to explain things this clearly as you do. Keep the great videos coming, thanks!
Glad you are enjoying them =)
Every one should watch jeremys it lab along with this channel
Agree!
I love that you explain this without overcomplicating it with too much technical jargon. I'm studying for a networking exam and this series is really helping.
How did the exam go =)
best example of why layer 3 ip addresses and layer 2 mac addresses exist that i've seen
i finally understand the concept, thank you
Just like any popular web series, I have been binge watching your videos since yesterday. Thanks to CZcams algorithm that I landed on your channel and immediately subscribed. The way you present the hitherto complex topics in such a lucid and comprehensible manner is mind boggling !! I mean in last 24 hours itself, just by binge watching your videos, my knowledge on networking fundamentals and the OSI model has shot up by multiple notches. It's incredible !! Not a single tutor in my career's last 10 years had explained the concepts in such an eloquent manner (that too free). Please accept my GRAND SALUTE and continue to do the awesome work !! 😇
My good sir I’m getting into cybersecurity w the google certificate and everyone says having a strong foundation of networking is key and will set you apart. These videos are 10/10 informative and very easy to follow. Your hard work is THOROUGHLY appreciated!
no way i surfed the whole internet trying to find an explanation to the osi model until i found this thing you re litteraly a pro thx a lot ❤️
I remember reading a quote that said "The true mark of an intelligent person is how they explain stuff." and hearing the different systems of our body analogy did that for me. It explained the physicality of networking layers so nicely for me. You are doing great work, sir!
It's the first time I have clearly understood the OSI model.
Excellent explanations and illustrations.
Looking forward to the complete networking course!
Out of necessity in this world we live in full of computers, I've been trying to wrap my head around computer networking, watching any and all videos I can (whenever time permits), and yours has been the easiest to understand and most organized. Thank you!
Glad these videos have helped you =). Cheers !
I am preparing for the CCNA. I can finally move forward with understanding. This is the best explanation of the TCP/IP, OSI Model I've come across. Some things now finally make sense. I excited about the rest of your videos. I feel confident now about the course.
Thank you, Alecia. Glad you enjoyed this series =)
Hi, did you pass the exam?
Possibly the best teacher i've ever seen on any topic. You explain things really, really well. Amazing stuff.
There is no one explains these like you do. "Underappreciated Channel ! "
Thank you, Ethem. I appreciate the kind comment.
Some of the best lessons on networking I've seen on youtube. Excellent job!
Thank you =). Glad you enjoy them!
This is one of the coolest, simplest and logical explanation of how OSI works. There are tones and tones of videos on YT but unfortunately majority stuff is just "theory and conceptual" level. This video on the other hand explains everything practically and the way it should be. Great work.
over ten years ago as a student, I have must gone to school far from home about 20km to learn Network. I remember this module take 1 week to learn, and now I just watch it in 30 minutes to understand what I need. Thanks
FOr what it's worth I was in the same boat. This series in 90~ minutes teaches what took me 2-3 years to learn as a Networking Admin.
same here man
Einstein said ‘if you can’t simply explain it , than you don’t fully understand it’ … you are the epitome of this! ..
Meaning your a master at this, your understanding is so potent your so good that you simply explained things lol
That in fact is the quote I use as my mission statement on my About page of my blog =). pracnet.net/about
Cheers friend, thanks for the encouragement. =)
What does OSI mean?
You’re a GREAT instructor! Truly. If there’s one thing you could improve upon is making sure you ALWAYS introduce an acronym only after you have spoken it’s full form, and the gradually shift in your speech to the use of the acronym alone, thus teaching the acronym as you’re teaching your subject.
That's a fair point. I make more of an effort to introduce the words that make up the acronyms when they are more relevant (you'll see this in Lesson 6 if you continue the series).
In the case of OSI... the name is somewhat arbitrary. Open Systems Interconnect -- it's simply the name of the group which was trying to establish the standard. The letters don't actually mean anything.
when i thought i know the OSI model and you just blow me away with really better understanding . Now i do not have to memorized this again with bogus acronyms . I can now explain to this anyone. Thank you Ed
Explaining it to someone else is always my goal since I started my website 5+ years ago =). Glad to hear this video has empowered you to teach someone else =)
No words to explain how simply you have explained this. Appreciating your passion and efforts.
Glad you've enjoyed these, Sebastian =). Hope you enjoy the rest of the series as well.

This is the best explanation of the OSI model on the Internet. I'd recommend all of you to watch all the videos of this channel at 0.75x speed to get an even-better understanding of the topics.
@@PracticalNetworking You're welcome.
All the best, fellow teacher.
Hello Sir, I have never seen such videos like these. Nobody else could explain IT stuff easier. Many thanks for your great work. From Viet Nam.
Hi Thanh. Glad you're enjoying these videos =). Thank you for the kind words!
Nice job on the infographics. Very clear explanation, thanks!
You're welcome!
Again, baffled by how excellent these videos are. Way to go!
I am taking a network administration course and you explained things better in 30 mins than my professor did in a week. Brilliant explanations. Thank you
Glad this is helping make sense of it =). Good luck w/ the Network Administration course =)
This series is jaw dropping in its simplicity, insight and usefulness. Many, MANY, thanks.
You're very welcome, Mr Didaxi =)
I am refreshing my networking knowledge to prepare for a cyber security course and this is the best playlist i ever needed. Thanks for the free teachings.
Thank you Shankar. Glad you enjoyed this content. If you're interested in Cyber Security, you might also be interested in my deep dive TLS/SSL course: classes.pracnet.net/courses/practical-tls
I have watched a few courses about Networking on CZcams and you are by far the best when it comes to delivery and explanation. You made others look like they don’t really have an in-depth practical concept and understanding of how networking works. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I wish you thought Linux, AWS, Bash, Kubernetes and every other subject directed towards the path of Cloud engineering/DevOps. Thanks again!
To be honest i have 4 years of Information Technology college university degree and i have never looked at the aspect you explain at time:10:20 the way you explain it...everything makes more sense to me now....thanks a bunch 🎉🎉
Glad this helped, Vially =). Please help me spread the word about this video!
@@PracticalNetworking of course I'll do so
@@viallymboma9874 Thank you for your support!
I am watching this again, like new wine, its evergreen. Thank you.
These lessons are really amazing. Especially if you want to prepare to study for the CCNA.
sooo true broo, anyone who wants to go for CCNA should understand network fundamentals and this is the best one i have seen
I've been taking the Google Cybersecurity course on Coursera, and this series is more in depth than that is. You do such a great job at breaking everything down even further so that I not only grasp the overlying concepts, but understand it on a fundamental level without making it seem tedious. I look back on notes I took in that and see a whole lot that the Coursera course didn't cover. Really glad I found this.
haha me too! Im also doing the same course and came across these videos hoping to understand networks better. Fantastic set of vidoes!
Same here 😂😅
Honestly coursera is completely mixing me up 😢 thanks to your videos it all makes sense now SMH 😊
This is like the 10th video plus numerous lectures i have had on networking plus, But it ends here. YES You are The Teaching Teacher. Thank you Sir
Cheers Elvis. Glad this one made it click =). Hope you enjoy the rest of the videos in the NEtworking series as well. czcams.com/play/PLIFyRwBY_4bRLmKfP1KnZA6rZbRHtxmXi.html
Could you do me a favor? Do you mind sharing this video on Linked In, Reddit, Twitter, Facebook, or any other social media you use? As an independent creator, that would be an _enormous_ help, and I would appreciate it _greatly_ .
I can't thank you enough. I am taking a Google IT Support Certification Course; unfortunately, the material they provide is almost useless compared to how you explain these concepts. Thank you again for all your hard work.
The video series is one of the best I've seen so far! In all my college years and working years, I've never been able to understand these concepts as clearly as I understand them now. Your videos are more educational than most Engineering courses that cover these concepts. Will definitely recommend this series to everyone who is studying networking. Also, this is the first time I'm hooked to an educational series and binge-watch these like I used to with a Netflix series! Thank you so much for the brilliant illustrations and explanations.
I have been watching several videos to understand this concept and I must confess yours has nailed it. I can't wait to watch the part two of the OSI model
Explained this so well. Best so far!
I stumbled across Practical Networking yesterday while looking for information on how VLANs work. I was so impressed by how well you broke it down into simple concepts with illustrative animations that I've subscribed and started watching these fundamentals videos to get a proper grounding in networking. They are brilliant, thank you.
best explanation of OSI Model on internet
You really deserve a reward for such information, God bless you.
Thank you for saying so =)
The best video that i have seen till now to understand OSI model and its real time usage! Thank you so much for your effort!
You're very welcome! Thank you for the kind words =)
This is the BEST explanation of the OSI model I have ever seen. So many people don't explain why it is practical to use it as a model for networking, so it's just rote memorization of weird facts that don't' have any context. Especially when you get to the upper layers. You're a very good teacher and actually made this comprehensible, and INTERESTING, and not just a bunch of facts.
I'll never stop being amazed by the clarity and simplicity of your explanations when I watch your videos, no matter how many times I watch them. for real . i hope one day that I could meet you. Thanks, and May God bless you for ever ❤
Came here from Jeremy's... You got a great friend, he is promoting your channel even though you could be a competitor... Nice... Good luck to both of you...
Jeremy is great! I recommend his course to all my followers as well: www.practicalnetworking.net/announcement/ccna-training-videos-from-jeremys-it-lab/
Amazing. Can’t thank you enough. I’ve been looking for a practical explanation of the OSI model rather than the usual “just memorize it”, so happy to find your videos. I’ve taken networking three times and passed with flying colors each time however, I don’t use it every day so things start to get fuzzy. Now I have to apply it again and need a refresh…except this refresh is many times better than any version I was originally taught.
Finally, A thirsty reaches the well..... Thank you for all this :)
You're welcome, Scorpio =)
This entire playlist is a godsend! thank you.
I'm taking an ethical Hacking course and I needed these videos!!
Why are your videos so easy to understand and entertaining?! :)
;)
Thanks to Practical Networking for the best simplest explanation of relation between IP and MAC for beginners
=) So happy you enjoyed that!
Thank you so much! I’ve been bumping my head where MAC addresses and IP addresses interact and what layer 2 switches do with both. This cleared it up for me. Great video! I will keep watching as this helps me with my job ❤
Yep, your presentation and explanation style is absolutely brilliant 10/10. Thanks for making the complicated easy,
This is the best explanation of headers. I’ve know fully understand what I’ve been struggling with for the past year about MAC and IP addresses
The best explaination of the OSI model i found so far. Thank you
This is amazing, I have been studing pointlessly many books until I watch your presentation. thanks
Glad you enjoyed this, Maggie. Hope you enjoy the rest of the series as well.
You are amazing!! I don't know if there are words to describe how much I appreciate what you have done to explain this subject. Thank you and God bless you!
Thank you, Ferhana. Kind of you to say.

I see a thousand of video about networking, but his explaination method are really THE BEST! Thankyou man!!
Your explanation of how computer networks work is so clear. Thank you.
The clearest Ibhave ever seen explained
Thank you, Arthur =)
You explain things so well that a little child would understand too and remember it. Thank you
true professional approach of teaching.
Thank you =)
Finally a video that explains what devices sit where in the model. Also I have watched so many videos on this and never once have they explained the MAC address data transport part showing how the mac address is changed per hop so that helped explain a lot as well, thank you for this video.
You're very welcome, Zekoo. Glad you enjoyed it.
This is some seriously crazy stuff. Loving it. These channel should have million subscribers.
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for the kind words! =)
no one has explained networking like this before. It seems so easy now.
BEST EXPLANATION AVAILABLE ON THE INTERNET !
Funnily enough the first time I saw a MAC address was when I was a teenager and it was on... a Mac - so I assumed it had to be some kind of weird apple address
I have seen it elsewhere but that just confused things. Now I understand thoroughly thank you
Ha, perfectly fair deduction =). I would have done the same thing. Glad you enjoyed the video, James!
How does the router-1 with the MAC: b3b3 know the MAC: c4c4 of the router-2 to mount the
L2 header?
That is answered in Lesson 5b of the series =)., But I'd recommend to continue watching in order.
