It all depends on how you define collecting. If it's "I need to get this line complete", then I'm very close to the end goal. If it's "I occasionally buy this figure because I like it a lot on its own", then I dont think there ever needs to be an end goal.

Great Topic guys! I started this quest with the goal of putting together a really nice season 1 and 2 and possibly movie masterpiece set and I’m almost done. To fight the space issue I just have one display shelf in the house and a few smaller shelves I use that can hold around 40-50 bots depending on size and only display them for about a year and then change the display with new characters and poses. The space I need to store is much less than the space I need to display. This also has the added benefit of forcing me to play around with my stuff and keep a fresh display plus I don’t collect as much dust over time on the entire collection.

For me collecting really picked up after my Mom passed, I wanted to get all the figures that I had a connection to & a memory of with my Mom & honestly I'm getting pretty close to having everybody I want. Now I don't think I will ever be done much like Bobby per say I will swap a character out if they make a better version then either gift, donate, or sell said replaced figure, but as far as getting figure after figure will definitely come to an end.

I may of missed the point, but if the goal of collecting is to keep buying until the end times, then your not a collector, you're a slave to consumerism. There has to be a somewhat visible goal/end. That goal can move, but to justify needing everything is unhealthy.
For me, other than getting my hands on my Gigapower Graviter, I think that I'm done. There are no characters that I need that I don't already have. I have a small list of bots that I'd switch out if a better one comes out, and I also have a small list of bots that I'd get if I found one dirt cheap. Other than that, I think that the only bots I'd buy would be anything cool, unique, and/or interesting that comes out in the future. Mayhem Mechanics had a line that I'd be all in on, and the rumour is that Master Made is done, so I guess that the only thing left for me is to work on my displays.

I think this is the defining point of sanity for a collector, is it an addiction or is it something else. My current end goal is going to be space related. To add more it will mean to replace or remove something. The hard part is going to be... what part of a collection gets x amount of space.

The "End Game" is a personal choice. I think those who are completists will forever be aggravated because things will either never end (like Transformers that keeps reinventing itself) or a line ends abruptly and is incomplete. One has to decide their parameters. I don't need every release. I cherry pick. And I'm almost at the point in the MP line where I can call it done. That makes me happy.

I don’t have a goal but I’m thankful I only have space for three Billy’s this really limits what I can display at one time but does put boundaries in place so I don’t just buy loads of stuff I don’t need (not that we really ‘need’ any of this stuff) I’m at the stage now where I have to decide what goes in the loft for a while and what stays on display. At the moment, I feel like I am sort of collecting for the sake of it. I suspect that is because I have not had a real chance to display my collection for the last 4-ish years. At this time, I am mostly working off of an impression of what I have or may want to do, but have not been able to put it into practice. It will be very interesting to see how my feelings evolve when I do get the opportunity to pull everything out of storage and start to arrange it. My guess is that I'll start curating and cutting out figures at that point and redefine what I'm actually seeking from my accumulated collection.

  • @bobdobalina8910
    @bobdobalina8910 Před 2 lety +1

Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder. If you think it's complete. It's complete. Some like only certain figures, or certain companies. Some Grow their Collections, while others pare it down to just what they will be happiest with. Then there are those that will continually UPGRADE, as long as there are 3Ps willing to build "Better" Engineered Pieces or more Aesthetically pleasing ones etc.
Me? I don't know where I will end with them. I expanded to the Decepticons from the Moive after I vehemently said I wouldn't.
I also started in on Legends & am thoroughly AMAZED at the Detail & Engineering, the downside is, they are getting Expensive fast.
That being said, I am looking to wind down my Marvel Legends, with the constant price bumps lately, and LAME AF ones more than what I consider "Good" ones, I am pulling the plug and moving into my purchases character by character, not entire BAF.
The 'Joe line, hasbro SHE HIT the bed, & I said EFF it. A shame as I was looking forward to collecting the line & adding them to my 25th/30th & Originals.
The FINISH LINE is different for everyone.

I understand the need to get out but I'm not sure I'll ever understand the idea of being "done" but still being in the hobby. There will always be better versions coming out - or even just "different" versions and thats always going to keep me interested to some degree. I just love seeing how the technology and engineering behind figure design evolves and that alone will keep me buying to some degree. But I'm a person who likes handling this stuff as much as I do displaying it.

  • @darthprime4916
    @darthprime4916 Před 2 lety +1

Lot of it comes down to just personal preference. To me the huge increase in price kicked me out of MP. I still want some of them. But I can’t justify/afford them anymore. Plus as some of us fans get older, priorities shift. I’m running out of space and the wife is getting less thrilled with each thing I acquire.
To me collecting is never done. It’s an addiction to some. But there’s always a newer take on character, better made….etc.
lastly, just when you think you are done…I like to say it’s like a show. The first show I was obsessed with was Walking Dead, how can they make anything better (talking about earlier seasons), then Game or Thrones comes out….it ends…how can they top this and something else comes out that will be bigger and better…. See my point.
I just can’t see ever getting rid of anything tho

Once the scaled MP figures started coming out, my goal became "every show character." I got into the WfC Trilogy stuff too because it's basically the true G1 redux I wanted, so I'll probably keep going with the ones that complete my G1 collection. My eyes were drawn to the unfinished display at 7:35 and for the top right cube with the statue of baroness & evil lyn, I got to wondering, what would be the best 3rd statue of a character to go there... i.e. who's the classic/iconic 80s toon female villain to go there?
The first females that came to mind were more 90s themed, and then I came up with these 3...
-one I think is the best of the remaining 80s female villains, but wouldn't necessarily fit that display (yet after recent statue releases, I realize I'd want it, despite never considering it as a statue display piece before).
-the second is who I would prefer, yet might not meet the standards in some folks' eyes.
-the third is who I think would be a perfect fit in that display, for iconicness and the distinctive uniqueness of the other two ladies there.
    And my thoughts are:
[1] crasher from the renegades (GOBOTS cartoon)
    [2] vanessa warfield from V.E.N.O.M. (M.A.S.K. cartoon)
[3] pizazz from the misfits (Jem cartoon)

I get the premise of this video, but I don't really understand where it went as it didn't seem like there was an exit strategy from anyone really....lol I feel like it depends on the collector for when the collecting ends. If you ALWAYS have to have the newest greatest figure, then you will never be done... I think setting a goal is also something that helps if you really WANT to exit or stop collecting. Who wants to do that really though? I don't know what the term is, but maybe it is the type of collector? Like Avid vs. casual?

  • @soilworker3

Since my "goal" has changed quite a bit since I started, what I did instead was set some hard boundaries. In order to keep it under control, I don't collect anything human based, this cuts down on a LOT. No DBZ, GI Joe, Marvel, DC, MOTU, etc...no models and no statues. I really love some characters from these other franchises, but can ultimately live without them. Initially I only wanted MP scale stuff of what I liked as a kid. This mostly holds true now, but I want at least one character from each year of G1. There have been several characters that I had no connection to but found figures of that were just too awesome not to have. There are only about a dozen or so left that I definitely want and are available and a handful or so of others that I might get but don't need or don't exist yet.

I want a full G1 collection of mainline figures. That's my endgame. But, the Unicron Trilogy was my childhood transformers cartoons, and with the rumors of UT characters getting new figures in the next toyline trilogy, I will be keeping my eye out for them. I do not want every UT character, but there are a handful of characters I'd buy if they get made. So once I have every G1 characters, I'll consider myself done collecting, but I'll leave the door open for a new figure every now and then.

This is a very interesting topic. I remember I started with the Power of the Force line way back and up until the Attack of the Clones movie. Then I changed it up to Super Robots with Soul of Chogokin line, but ended up buying from other lines too. And then I made a mistake/good move (haven't decided yet) to buy Maketoys Gundog in 2nd hand just because I wanted the original 18 Arc Autobots. And that's when it all started to spiral down. I went out of that goal when I saw MP Soundwave for the 1rst time a d I said to myself... wow that looks so good I want it. But what is Soundwave without Megatron and at least Starscream? And then I got my 1srt FansToys figure with Shockwave and I was like... wow... this one feels premium like the old Sould of Chogokin figures. This is next level. Yeah... We all know what happens after that point. I was hooked with Transformers. 😅 To the point where I'm buying Monsterbots and all that stuff. I have tried to exit collecting a couple times now. But then some company comes up with another new bot and it all starts again. 😓 I'm 53yo now. I got tired of all the "let's go out and party" lifestyle and I guess I switched that out when I got into collecting. And I've really enjoyed this fase in my life. The feeling whenever I get a new box and get the figure out and start messing with it and taking photos (Wich has been a new hobby too). I really like that feeling. Maybe too much. lol But nowadays I've been looking forward to end this fase. I will always have my figures. And I love looking at them and the whole "curating" aspect of the hobby. Anyways... I'm looking forward to finish collecting and finding a new hobby that gets me out of the house more. Probably something involving nature photography or something like that. But deep down I know that there will be times that I'll see a new release that will bring me back into de rabbit hole of collecting. 🥰

Now since nothing new has been coming out the past year, i have just been moving to other things like x men and rare figures. I think I just have an addiction to buying stuff lol!!

Tread carefully in sneaker collecting...that sh*t leads to a point where you're putting down clean towels on your floor mat so you don't get "drivers heal"

Believe it or not, I've sold about 75% of my collection in the last month, cause I almost died 2 months ago, so I decided to sell most of my collection so it doesn't go to waste if something bad happens to me.

Personally I fee close in terms I can see what will finish things for me but at the same time I feel like I’ll never be finished because I’m waiting for Takara and 3rd party to get to that point. 3rd party I know will get there a damn sight quicker than Takara for mp BW I reckon s2 and 3 maximals and preds will be done much sooner than takara’s S1. I have a few MMC things on order that I’m waiting on. I’m completely ok with finishing but it’s looking so unrealistic with how long it is going to take.

I have an end point. MP scale seasons 1 & 2 + Galvatron & Rodimus if FT release one. That's it.

I’m getting rid of my older figures. Spawn and other things of the like. But I’m almost done with my TFs. Few more MP pieces. From now on is just buying Fanstoys and if Zeta makes more combiners. Marvel legends. I just really want the 90s stuff. Now, classified as far as they can go. Hopefully they just stay with the more popular vehicles. Before they go neon.

As long as I have the funds and space for collecting, I don't see an end game in the near future.
