Scheppach OSM600 Belt and Bobbin Sander Fix and Upgrade

  • Following on from my initial review of this (gifted) belt and bobbin sander from Scheppach, in this video I fix the belt backing plate making if flat. This being made flat, also made it worthwhile adding a mitre gauge to the table top.
    The results of this combination made for some surprisingly accurate results.
    And yes, although I'm talking about the Scheppach machine here, the same issue (if it exists) can be fixed for the same machines - as in it's exactly the same! - from other brands including Triton, Clarke, DK Rutlands, Lumberjack, WEN, Holzstar, Bauer (Harbor Frieght), Grizzly, Sealey, Draper and - I think - Aldi/Lidl too.

    That’s a valuable upgrade to a basically useful machine. In the cheap tools versus expensive tools, cheap tools are great if you can fix / tune them up. You’ve turned a relatively cheap tool into a high precision tool, for you. Excellent effort. If Scheppach are reading comments, then I suggest that in addition to adding your mitre attachment, they also add some set up shapes. It must cost only pennies to produce some polycarbonate shapes at the common angles. Perhaps even a simple adjustable shape?

      Cheers mate. Yeah, I think by doing this it's made it a great little machine. I do feel a flat platten is fundamental though and can't help but feel it's a poor show, even if it's a budget tool. Like the idea of a guide set. I've made a bunch for my mft angle fence thing👍

    I've had trouble with mine for years. i very rarely use it now at this stage because of the back plate. It's a great fix. If i have time, I'll eventually try this.

    Another great vid Stu. The problem with mine is that I can't get the moving table perpendicular to the sanding plate. I'd assumed it was the table, but maybe I need to look at the sander plate. 🤔

    • @BischBaschBosch
      @BischBaschBosch  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Thanks mate. If you need a bit more tilt on the table to get it perpendicular, undo the arms under the table (just a single pozi screw on each) and stick a washer over the screw between the arm and the table. Then tighten back up. Add another if necessary though, you might need to file the slot in the arms by the tightening knob if you do. This is the easiest way. I wouldn't try messing with the spindle or anything. Hope this helps 👍

    • @BischBaschBosch
      @BischBaschBosch  Před 3 měsíci +1

      @@samrix5793 When the mitre gauge is at 45, it's positioned so the point of the mitre is just catching the right side of the backing plate. This makes it look central-ish at 90. Still enough on it to neaten up a piece 65mm wide which is all I'd need.

    My cheapo deg sander doesn’t go up and down but the plate is flat. So I find it very useful. It also has a slot for a mitre gauge. You need to set the mitre to the right. Don’t forget to continually dress the sandpaper if you want it to last more than five minutes.

    • @BischBaschBosch
      @BischBaschBosch  Před 3 měsíci

      Glad to hear it mate. A flat plattern should be standard. Oh well. Yeah, I have a large abrasive rubber for dressing. Very important. Showed it in the original review vid I think.👍

    The Ridgid is fundamentally different in its drive system and there are videoe breaking down its construction but most notably it runs in the opposite direction and has left-handed fasteners on the belt/drums. That said I can’t say if it suffers from the same issue. I have the Bauer.

    • @BischBaschBosch
      @BischBaschBosch  Před 3 měsíci

      So, despite the huge volume of ridgid reviews over the years, very few showed the plattern assembly under the belt. A couple I found - and old grey version and an early orange version - appeared to have very similar pressed steel platterns. They showed signs of very uneven wear, typical of a sufface nit being flat, as well as bolt/screw heads in the plattern. I have since found online images of the newer ones which have a very different plattern design, much more typical of a hand held belt sander. They do look machined flat and as a bonus, dont have exposed bolt heads. It's good to see . Here's hoping the type I show here (same as your Bauer) follow suit one day!

    Okay, a bit of a diversion here: if you truly want to understand the commodification of manufacturing and how China dominates in this regard, check out the "Half As Interesting" channel's "Why Almost Every Microwave is Made by the Same Company" video. Technology Connections channel looks at things the other way around, pointing out that vintage microwaves are generally better and genuinely more diverse.
    Anyway, thanks for these videos. I will be jumping in and getting a machine of my own, but with the certainty that I'll be taking it apart and fettling it. Just like almost every other tool I own.

    • @BischBaschBosch
      @BischBaschBosch  Před 3 měsíci

      Cheers, I'll check that out. Even though we know though, dont we? Something along the lines of "to maximise profit potential you need maximum capacity, streamlined, cost effective production " sort of thing? That and marketising every bit of human activity is the grift of our times! Talking of tinkering/dismantling, it did cross my mind to combine my profile builds with these budget tools - stripped down for parts to unleash their potential. It's just time that stops me. Back on the furniture now🤷‍♂️

    Interesting point about generic builds and the illusion of choice. I am pretty savvy but also pretty poor, so I have to shop around for the best I can afford. I must admit I'm less inclined to ask for product advice on Facebook pages about tools. I asked about thicknessers a while back and I was inundated with useless advice about everything except the actual tool I was asking about. But generic types can be great. I just bought a Rutlands badged worksite type table saw. It came with a DeWalt rack and pinion fence that was bang on, blade at 90 degrees out of the box, and all for £250. I tried a friends DeWalt and to my untrained eye, I couldn't tell the difference.

    • @BischBaschBosch
      @BischBaschBosch  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Yeah, ask 10 people's opinions on a tool and get 10 different opinions - not always on the same tool! A lot of times, if budget is limited, used equipment is the better option than budget new. I'm alright with the odd budget issue as long as it has a reasonable fix, like the one covered here. Good to hear the Rutlands table saw has a rack and pinion fence. Why that's not mire common I've no idea.🤷‍♂️👍

      From what I could find, their newer version has a revamped body. Kind of like a base, a frame and a table, with slimmed down motor housing in between. Crucially though, non of its fundamentals re the belt plattern, looked to have changed at all.
