André 3000 opens up to Rick Rubin in one of his most candid interviews ever during a 2019 visit to Shangri-La. He talks about the early days of OutKast, how he first found his voice, how his mental health diagnosis has been both a blessing a curse, why it’s so hard for him to write new material, and why he would rather perform at flea markets these days than sold-out arenas.

"when you are alone a lot.... you contemplate. When you have a lot of time to contemplate sometimes it's not good... and the brain loves to find problems and that's not good." I felt this line.
As a man who travels fro a living...
I definitely felt it
I didnt feel it. No offense. Because the truth of the matter is, when youre alone, is when you're with God. The brain loves to find problems so it can show you that something needs to be fixed. Look around you. The world is filled with people who dont think they have a problem and are afraid to be alone so that they can keep that false sense of reality. There's a lot of noise in the air these days meaning less time to be alone whether physical human company or music or youtube. Theres constantly someone in our ear. Less alone time.
Son of man! No offense taken but I would not count CZcams or just random noise pollution as not being alone. Yes when you are alone you are with God. My experience is that company around you leads to less thinking by the brain. Sometimes they aren’t really problems they are just random thoughts that your brain perceives as a problem.
Good u got the sense of it and 85 ppl more.
I heard this part LOUDLY. It rang true.
I went to middle school with A3K( Andre Benjamin) and EVERYTIME and I mean EVERYTIME I see or hear his name or voice I light up with pride over who he's become, we lost a lot of schoolmates due to drugs and violence, so I'm always happy to remember the journey that took us from then to now. I appreciate his success because his success felt personal to me..."Andre, I still remember you and your boys tried to jump me at school 😂🤣😂" I love you and pray for your continued success both professionally and personally.

I think it's more so he wouldn't enjoy it. He believes he's not the same, which he isn't but his rust is others artist best project so he just needs to do it
“Never been great at anything” says one of the greatest rappers of all time.
...lol yeah I said WHAT! out loud in the car
What I think he really means there is he never stuck with a certain thing long enough to be at the status of Miles Davis with the trumpet, or Herbie Hancock with the keys.
I don't think he would deny he's a great rapper, but at this point he's definitely outside of the realm of rap even being considered in the same circle of musicality as some of the jazz and rock greats on their instruments, it's an entirely different thing. Everyone who can talk grows up speaking, and can learn to put rhythm and cadence and inflection on their voice, but 90% of people who can talk can't play an instrument with their breath like trumpet or sax or clarinet.
@@antondoty5552 yeah, but learning and being decent at an instrument isnt hard, it just takes time. Its just viewed as "above" rap because most people dont do it, even though they 100% can. Every body is impressed when someone can play the simplest song while I just cringe. Andre3000s songwriting is what puts him above other rappers, yes he has incredible technical skill but miles davis isnt known for just playing notes in a rhythm hes known for what he did in jazz, both andre 3000 and miles davis are equally great artists.
Jun Di Totally, but he’s not talking about being decent. He’s talking about being great. And while you’re right about various instruments being easy to pick up by anyone, and bad players with shitty songs are definitely cringeworthy it absolutely takes more time, practice and dedication to become an incredible instrumentalist vs an incredible rapper/songwriter.
Not discounting those who practice their rapping and songwriting at the same level of technical ability as a world renown violinist or trumpeter, but most rappers don’t have that level of commitment which dilutes the pool a little bit.
@@antondoty5552 Yes, 100%

He was behind me in line. I walked out to my scooter to look for change and I hear “I got you” I turned around and he handed me two dollars. I said “I only need one it’s ok” and as I was giving him back one dollar I noticed who it was and I said “are you Andre Benjamin?” He said “yes sir I am” I was like “O MY GOD!” He gave me a big hug and I said “can I take picture with you?” He said “yes”. I told him, “thank you for what you do for music” at the time he was filming the Jimi Hendrix movie and I asked him about that and he said, “I can’t really tell you about that” but he wanted to tell me I could see it In his eyes. Then he noticed more people walking up and he got nervous and said “alright love you” and he gave me another hug and he got in his SUV and took off.

When he said “Ive never been great at anything” I had to take a seat. I’ve gone through some rough year of depression and now that I’m starting to feel better - I can’t help all the shame at the “wasted time.” I constantly feel not great at anything because I just feel so behind - and I felt that way before the depression got bad. To hear 3k say he feels that way too is just - I want to give him a hug. I get it.
I was listening to a podcast that said, “it’s important to live life by design rather than emotion. Basically, sticking to a routine is what allows us to be the healthiest version of ourselves (especially when you're fighting these demons ex. OCD for me).
I’ve had to overhaul how I approach taking care of my brain (exercise, journaling, studying etc) by practising mediocre consistency. Now I try to put in consistent 50-60% effort into my journaling habit - to make sure I do it I began recording it and posting it on YT.
Because historically I have a habit of going too hard, not being able to sustain the Herculean effort, giving up and hating myself. So now I’m trying to give a small, consistent mediocre effort everyday. And its crazy how it adds up.

I wasnt feeling them that first album...BUT the next 3! man I'm one of there biggest fans I love them both big boi & 3 stacks.... but since they are on hiatus my new number one Duo is LITTLE BROTHER!
Andre 3000 Dave Chappelle of Rap the door always open when he ready..
fax!!!!!!
Facts!
Facts!!
"It's that hyper sensitivity that makes you a great artist... It's harder to be in the world, but that's the gift". Wheeeeew!!!!
Rick rubin is a total legend....this is awsome
I feel like Rick is interviewing me. Damm. I can relate so much to Andre is crazy.
Fame ain’t no joke.
one hella a drug
I don't think it's fame.. It's a personality thing. It's noticeable more with famous people. For example, I am glad we wear masks because I feel normal now I don't get noticed. I get frustrated when going in public places because I don't wish people can notice me.
How do you deal with being famous??
Agreed!... I wouldn't have been able to survive it if I lived it.
For over 20 years Outkast and Hieroglyphics have been two of my favorite rap groups and within 30sec of listening to the podcast I NOW know why. If y’all ain’t never heard 3rd Eye Vision by Hiero, go bless yourself ASAP! ✌🏾
Hiero aight. Not anywhere near Outkast or 3K
Great to see some love for Hiero
Andre is a true GENIUS dude can write act rap direct produce... He will go down as one of the most influential people of all time..
The thing Andre said about his speaking voice being his music voice. That’s key
🔑
I ran into 3k in the bathroom of Starbucks in Cumberland. I said, “man you look like 3000.” He said, “that’s me”. Then I said something real fannish like, “man I love your music.” 🤣 I look back and see how ready he was for a regular conversation. If I could go back...
Man I'm so happy I stumbled upon this, even though a year later. Him saying he doesn't have the confidence blew me away. He later said how music nowadays is dissected at a rapid speed. And how the most negative remarks spread on the internet like wildfire. It can be maddening to an artist
I just have so much respect for Andre. He’s always been open with his lyrics and it’s just makes him that much better.
You can tell this man was meant to be a rapper when he said “I like listening to music I can hear my own thoughts to” 🔥
“I’m sad because I’m successful. Nobody wants to hear that s***!” This discussion is too good.
I find it brave to be that open🙏🙏🙏
And also Humble in the Jungle…❤
My fourth listen. There's something that's so comforting in this conversation.
This is probably the Dopest conversation I’ve EVER listened to about real shit
The Greatest
Hello Clique
alright alright alrigh alrigh alrigh alright alright alrrigtj alrigh a
Depending on who he's talking about, but I'm gonna assume he's talking about 3000 which, in this case, is right.
W
BRO CLIQUE THIS A W. VINCE, COLE AND 3 STACKS? WE LITERALLY LOVE THE SAME ARTISTS
I just want to say that riding around in Cadillacs, smoking, and eating chicken wings sounds...well it just sounds fantastic.
When you're gifted sensitivity is 2nd nature....empath this one..lots of love from sa..do u 3000 u don't owe them understanding
Andre 3000 is a once in a lifetime. Its a big statement but in terms of innovation and creativity etc hes up there with michael jackson and prince. Like rubin said nobody like him has made music like his since
I love how Rick is making Andre realize his potential. You can tell he’s judging his own lane... let it go Dre, bring it back! Would love to see his new music from a new perspective.
On everything! Me and my girl always talk about these sentiments exactly.
I think he knows his potential, he just feels stuck or overwhelmed by the ppl who will tear down or judge anything he puts out. And like he said he’s lacking confidence right now.
I would love new music from Andre but I want him to do what he wants to do. If his heart isn’t in it and he just wants to go to the park and play the bass clarinet, then I think that’s great. I think when ppl say “let it go, and bring back your music” it’s just adding to the feeling of being stuck or being overwhelmed.
Not that easy I can relate to Andre 3000 kinda hard to explain if you're not hypersensitive a empath ijs
With André dropping his new album last week, you can tell a lot of the seeds they discussed here took root.
Also, I remember years ago, I use to work at this supermarket and Andre 3000 and his son, Seven would come in to shop. One time he was in self check out and his card wouldn’t swipe, so he came to me to help him. He gave me his card to swipe at my cashier station. It was a Black card. It was the first time I ever held a black card in my hands in my life. The card was hard and didn’t bend. Once I swiped his card and got him checked out. He thanked me and left the store. He’s so polite, patient, and nice.
Suffering through social anxiety for 15 years now, depression, and hypersensitivity while being an artist; this was so refreshing to hear. Because for years I've been over analyzing, and Ricks advice was perfect.
P.S. The People that Grew Up listening to OutKast are STILL Alive!!!! There is a Audience for Ur New Normal Stacks!
Hell we dying to hear it, esp in a world of 100 sound-alikes. He was a new normal on every album, & it never took us long to realize how good it was.
Yes we are still here!!! I’m here for a 3000 Instrumental album (although he is my favorite emcee)... I even bought the Class of 3000 soundtrack, slept on
Class of 3000 was a great show. I wish it was on when I was a kid. Still great as an adult though.
Always!!!!
I’m 21 years old. I REALLY wanna hear a solo 3k record. Like really idgaf that he’s older, I wanna hear André. One of the greatest lyricists ever.
I’ve never related more in my life after hearing this conversation. Being an only child, dealing with isolation, searching for problems in my head that don’t exist. Thank you Rick and Andre.
This interview is giving me LIFE. My God. So completely REAL and dead on in terms of the lives of empaths, anxiety sufferers and creatives. Triple sigh. Thank you 3 Stacks and Rick for talking about this...
Andre's verses on Frank Ocean's BLONDE album are amazing! Absolutely brilliant moment on that record.
He destroys everyone on Frank's album. It's amazing.
Andre 3000 is my favorite artist
There is only ONE OTHER DUDE who could honestly be "the next Andre'" … and that's *CHILDISH GAMBINO.*
both are artists
both have their own funky style
both are deep with their lyrics
neither were about 'commercialization'
both are actors and producers
both are AT-aliens
both tap into "singing" in rap
I'd love to see them do a collaboration.
He’s a old soul 💕 love Andre 3000 ... we need to stop this fan culture and give these artists some space to be humans just living life. I’ve meet many “ famous” people and I walk right past them. I love what they do but we don’t know them in real life, they need to be respected just like anyone else. Great interview Rick 🎯
