Maybe Jeff got a feeling after 1.5 hours of being left out of the fun in his own home, that his friends weren’t really his friends and just wanted to use his stuff. He probably thought you, just would play it a little and then end it, so that you could all play together, but you didn’t.

I honestly didn’t want to say it because it sounds insanely confrontational and like most kids aren’t super sensitive to others emotions so I’m sure it wasn’t intentional but it’s really the unavoidable background vibes I get from this whole story even when narrating the story as an adult the only thing notable about Jeff was the cool stuff he had that others wanted to play with I’ve never been super rich but I’ve been situations as an adult where you’re the only guy in your friend group with a job and everyone just constantly wanting stuff. How Even now I don’t feel comfortable talking about how that made me feel because as much as feeling used sucks I’m sure being in a situation where you have to ask sucks even more, complaining about it almost feels like you’re being a selfish asshole complaining about minor issues compared to what everyone else puts up with, but with that said I can tell you that being in Jeff’s shoes isn’t fun constantly feeling worthless constantly feeling like the only value you hold to others is the things you can get them constantly feeling like you’re just some idiot getting played

I only have two real memories of a game turning my blood cold, but neither caused me any physical damage, and one wasn't even a game, per se. The first time was when I was maybe 6, I had somehow managed to get to the final stage in Megaman X4. Upon doing so, you're treated to a cutscene where the once rotund and friendly-looking Double transforms, his round body opening up like a Bakugan to reveal his true form, in all it's spiky glory. Looking back at it, he looked edgy as hell, and him starting to slaughter reploids, making them spew reddish oil is comical, but that was the first time I had ever been faced with the concept of mass violence, and I think I screamed, because my mother who was asleep on the bed (the Playstation was in her room) asked what was wrong. I explained it to her, and she just asked, "Do I have to not let you play that game anymore?" I and remember replying something like, no, I'm okay now. Still, that scene haunted me for a long time, and with the massive difficulty spike that boss brought, I was more than okay with never finishing the game anyway.
The other was the PS2 Red Screen of Death. 'Nuff said.

Epileptic seizures are common enough that most game instruction books carried warnings about them. There was a news story when I was a kid about a guy that had rented the PS version of Red Alert and had a seizure. It has nothing to do with "trippy" visuals, just particular light patterns.

Well that story is pretty morbid, but when a game can do such a traumatizing thing to you, it can actually change your outlook on life pretty quick. For example, I refuse to play any type of VR game. Fantastic video and to answer your question at the end, yes. There is a game.
Now, the game that really freaked me out as a kid was a horror game; now I know what you are thinking "they are meant to freak you out!" But this was different.
It was a DOS game called Dark Seed.
Now Dark Seed is by Cyberdreams who made the game I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream (which luckily I didn't play when I was younger because that probably would have scarred me also.)
DS is a point and click adventure that freaked me out for all the wrong reasons. The game is painfully esoteric and obtuse. I am sure there are worst examples (like Armed and Delirious) of a point and click game that is harder than DS but nothing really comes to mind.
The game is based around a 3 day cycle (3 real time hours) and certain things must be done in a particular order or the game is unwinnable.
I remember playing the game, enjoying the spooky visuals, but being made to feel incredibly anxious and unnerved by the game design itself. I'd never played a game that was so punishing. Yes, there are hard games like Contra etc but those show you the danger. Those show you what you did wrong. Dark Seed didnt do this at all. Dark Seed reveled in your powerlessness.
Of course we can just get a guide online nowadays but I was a kid and this was the 90's. Getting online wasn't that easy and search engines were primitive.
The whole game gives off this absolutely horrible and unnatural vibe which has stuck with me to this day. The games graphics are most rusty browns and silver. Even though I haven't played it in years I can still vividly see the parts of the game that, lets be honest, haunt my soul.
The parts where the aliens kill you dont stick in my mind all that much. But the parts that I do remember are talking to the strange neighbour and his dog and getting a horrid sense of paranoia. I remember going to a funeral home in the game and messing around looking for ashes or something like that. With absolutely no clue what to do with them. I remember picking up a policemans gun and having this horrible feeling of unease. I remember being in an attic completely lost with no idea what I was actually meant to be accomplishing.
Id played and loved games like Gabriel Knight which have violent horror elements but in those games you are clearly the hero. There are goals, theres a story.
Dark Seed felt more like playing a fever dream. Or as many of the reviewers at the time called it; a nightmare.
Dark Seed felt insidious. But more over it felt like being in a haze.
Imagine going through your day, completing tasks and chores with no contextual knowledge of why you were doing so. It's pure dissociation.
    Thats Dark Seed.
(Sorry about the rant. I bet the game feels nothing like that now. I do remember Pushing Up Roses doing a pretty good review of it, but I remember again feeling odd, because she obviously didn't get haunted by it like I did as a kid.)

You know the artwork in Dark Seed is by renowned Swiss surrealist artist / industrial designer HR Giger - who is amazing, but most well known for creating the Xenomorph in Alien (1979) - the movie with Sigourney Weaver. Directed by Ridley Scott etc. He got the devs to up their resolution but lower the color palette because he hates right angles.

    So... I have a theory.
In my experience, being the kid with stuff other kids want... it's interesting.
My family had horses growing up. I think it goes without saying, a lot of girls REALLY wanted to come over and play at my house... and when they got there, they were much more interested in the horses.
It's understandable, and at first I was fine with it. Horses are pretty cool...
However, there would be times when it was cold, rainy / muddy, or just plain yucky outside... and most of my visitors would rather stay out there petting or fawning over the horses, while I got bored of just standing around and went inside. =/
The feeling of loneliness is really palpable when people visit your home, then ignore you to focus on your things. =(
Don't get me wrong. It helped me figure out who my real friends were! The ones who wanted to play games with me, hang out at the library, have sleepovers... Sure, we hung out with the horses too, but there were a lot of times when we didn't. I knew they liked me for me, not just the animals.
I think... maybe your friend had an awakening of sorts.
After playing a video game that gave him seizures, and being told to not play it anymore, he figured you guys (as his friends) wouldn't want to put his health at risk and you all could play one of his many other games.
So when all of you wanted to play the one game he couldn't play, and went on playing it for a long time (in his eyes)... it might have felt like a betrayal of sorts.
You guys were off having fun, in his home, playing with his stuff... and he couldn't play with you.
He might have thought you weren't really his friends after all - that you liked him for his games, and not him.
So when he came in and told you to leave... I don't think it was an adverse effect from the game.
I think he "figured out" you weren't really his friends... to the point where you would rather play a game that could hurt him instead of actually playing with him.
Let me clarify - I absolutely DO NOT think you or your friends were bad people. There's nothing wrong with liking cool stuff and wanting to play with your friends' cool stuff! Again, I know those feelings, and as an adult I can see that kids just get blindsided by this kind of thing. They may not understand the difference between liking a person and liking their things - and that the two can exist together or separately.
I don't know what your friendship was like, and I don't want to make any judgements.
However... from my own experience, being the kid with stuff other kids wanted... that's my theory as to what happened.
It would also explain why things were never the same between you all after that day. Coming to that kind of revelation could not have been easy, especially after you all had been friends for a while.
    Anyway...
Thanks for sharing your story. =) I've never heard of this game. I really like your channel, and I can't wait to see more!

I had a similar story, but instead of preventing me from playing games in general, it only affected the Gears of War series.
It was back then in the 360 era. I was a huge fan of the two fist entries and ofc, I immediately started playing 3 when it was released. However, one day I was playing it and then I started not feeling well. I was seeing many TVs and I was losing consciousness. Last thing I remember is a phone call that I couldn't understand what the person on the line was saying. After that, I lost consciousness one hour and a half...
A few days later, after I was hospitalized and took some meds. I tried to resume playing, but I couldn't; I always got that sick feeling each time I start the game.
This was a few years ago and I haven't tried any game in the series recently.

Very interesting and entertaining video! I’ve never heard of this game before and I’m definitely wary of it now. Haha!
The only out of body/concerning experience I ever experienced while gaming was back when I was in college. I was in my dorm room and had been playing rock band on my Xbox 360 for over an hour or two straight, rarely taking any breaks to look away from the screen or move around, save for standing there while holding the guitar. I can still remember that at some point during the end of one of the last songs I played on it for the night, I noticed that I wasn’t hitting any of the corresponding notes which was odd because I could feel my fingers hitting the correct buttons and I swore my timing was as right as ever (I had gotten pretty proficient with the game at that point). All of a sudden I began to feel extremely light headed and the track on the screen began to blur together - I looked down to realize my guitar controller had fallen off the strap and was on the floor but I hadn’t even noticed.
It truly scared me. I remember immediately shutting off the tv and my console and swearing I wouldn’t ever allow myself to play that long without taking a few quality breaks in between.
I’ve never experienced anything like that ever since, but it’s still a haunting memory for sure.

An hour or two? Back when Super Mario Bros. 3 was new, I played for almost 10 hours straight. Glued to the screen most of the time also but no adverse effects from the experience. I guess it just depends on the individual. Before someone mentions the age difference, I also repeated this scenario with JRPGs many years later, with no side effects.

i first heard of top banana a few years ago from a whosithisgit video on bad graphics/poorly made visuals (series called "Leave My Eyes Alone!") and its hard to believe its real, even now. everything about it seems fake. the graphics ae so odd and garbled, the sound design off-putting, the actual mechanics so hard to figure out. its on my mind a good amount, since its such a difficult game to get a feel for, what they were going for and how they possibly released it in the nightmarish state it remains. it genuinely feels like a game youd play in a dream, where only fuzzy bits and pieces are left of your quickly-fading memory.
i feel like i could go on for eons about this game, but words escape me on how to truly convey my thoughts.

I remember this bootleg handheld console my Mom got me one time. It was one of those cheap ones she found at Walgreens. When you flip the switch, there's a whole library of mini games to play. I think what threw me off is that as soon as you turn it on, a brief musical queue plays before no music at all. The music was there to show the user "Hey, welcome to a library filled with crap!" After the music queue, you just hear a long and intense buzzing drone in the background. It didn't matter what you did after about 10 minutes because the longer you play, the more corrupted each game got. It gets to the point where nothing is functional anymore until you replace the batteries or reset it. Whatever that thing was, it was pure evil. I love my ma for thinking of my boredom, but that thing had actual sentience...

When I was younger, I don't recall games giving me photosensitivity issues. I was able to play the 16-bit Sonic games, Earthbound, and several others without issues. I was even able to play LSD Dream Emulator without having many issues.
Although the only game that really gave me any issues was Sonic the Fighters, due to the fast red and yellow strobing KO text. I don't remember having a seizure as most people would describe it (or at least one to the point of a blackout). I had a sharp shooting pain (like sudden pins and needles) that felt like someone punched me in the head, and my speech was slurred for a few minutes. I'm unsure if it was down to an anxiety attack, as I don't like games with that kind of stuff, and it was like the equivalent of a jumpscare, but I went to get an EEG and an MRI scan, and I passed the EEG (Which is supposed to trigger a seizure) with flying colors. I suppose there's plenty of cases where if these kinds of effects can phase a regular person, then they're probably extremely unsafe for someone with photosensitivity issues.
Although there's some examples of retro games where I absolutely want to have the anti-flicker shader enabled in Retroarch alongside a reduced saturation and contrast. Madou Monogatari (The PC Engine CD version, which has rapidly flashing menu selections), Castlevania: Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night, and Sakura Wars (Although this is bearable outside of the SP meter being maxed out which absolutely needs an anti-flicker shader to be playable) come to mind.
It's honestly really disappointing how much photosensitivity options in rereleases of older games and even simple options like disabling muzzle flashes from weapons that fire quickly or hologram flashing (like in some of Platinum's games) are completely overlooked, especially from legacy gaming news outlets that love to preach about accessibility options. They only covered Cyberpunk 2077 when it gave a reviewer issues. I'm glad that Gal*Gun Returns patched out the rapidly flashing Red and Yellow shouting text in a game patch despite the port's other issues.

I looked up this game and it's a wild one, to say the least. Your friend likely picked up one of the earliest known forms of those troll-like games, kinda like how people make weird bootleg/graphic NSFW rom hacks (i.e. the one with Felix the cat ripping his face off) back then.
While some are saying it's epilepsy (that is possible) or how you and your friends treated him (...I don't think that's the case), I think the game simply triggered a sense in fear from him. To be that young and get introduced to whatever weird psychedelic horror that thing was supposed to be, it probably scared him just enough to keep the game away from anyone's hands. I used to be horrified as a kid of some genuinely creepy Twilight Zone bumpers during their marathons on WBTV 20 back then growing up, because they'd pause frame on stills for a solid 5-7 seconds of some of the show's scariest moments as a kid, and that stuff used to freak me the f*ck out as a child, lol.
All I can say is I genuinely don't know why people would make games like that other than being a general d*ck of they had to have been tripping on acid during the making of that stuff, it's fascinating but deep down those are the games I avoid. Not because I don't like them, I love me some oddity games, but games that are just... I dunno, trippy/troll-y for sake of trippy/troll-y turn me off in gaming. Your friend was unfortunately introduced to a weird game and sadly it tore you guys apart. :(
