i'm a locomotive mechanic for union pacific and I've welded the shit out of a 2 stroke diesel block out in the middle of the utah west desert and it limped home. Well 4 years later that same engine is still pulling millions of pounds of freight over the rocky mountians at 60 plus mph. it will hold ppl are fugging dumb if they say that it can't work.
Thank you!
You ain't no locomotive 🚂 mechanic 🔧🛠️👨🔧 😂😂
Screaming!.. how you been Dude..
Locomotive blocks such as the 567,645, and 710 emd's are weldments or fabricated from plate and formed steel and totally different from a casting such as this 426 block. Cast iron pieces do not like to be heated in one spot as the expansion from the heat fractures the area around the weld which is why commercial weld shops will have a large oven to bring pieces up to a dull glow, weld a bit, then back in the oven. Needing to weld a caterpillar turbo elbow up several years ago I found out using the mig welder and stainless steel wire (high nickel content) works quite well and that turbo elbow is still together. Back 40+ years ago I had the chance to buy a complete 426 Hemi that had been a circle track engine but had punched a rod thru the pan rail taking out a half dollar size piece of iron. Back then everyone just said the block was not worth fixing, today I would go wow what an easy fix. Yes I could kick myself for not buying and stashing it away.
@@UncleTonysGarage no problem! ppl dont understand that welds are twice as strong as the cast iron itself! when the engine got back to the yard it was xrayed, machined, and rebuilt. they aren't going to send it out again with hundreds of milliond of dollars of freight to break down again if its not going to make it there again!
That's a lot of weld.
You're 3D printing a hemi.
😂👍🔥
Manual 3d printing
Heat the block before you do serious welding on the casting. It helps from heat cracks and weak spots
Put it on an old BBQ grill for a bit. Nice even heat
I swept the shop floors for a guy that built headers for Ray Barton and Bucky Hess back in the day. Held the collectors in place on a car for the tack welds that was pulling a wheelie on the cover of a magazine that month from PA and he said they were "Burns Headers" with the velocity spikes that we built on a bandsaw. He got the stainless from them in CA, people were baffled, because they just saw it at Maple. Like he shipped the car out there on a plane. Prep work is everything. Years later I welded one of those Isuzu 5 speed 1 piece bellhousing/trans that came in 90's Chevy's back together when everybody said I couldn't. It's still driving around the last I checked. Guy had it held in with ratchet straps when I started. I wish you the best of luck because I've seen impossible things work with the right fortitude.
You need to name this Hemi Steve Austin, the 426 Million Dollar Man. Gentlemen, we can rebuild him....

Grandpa tells me stories of how my great grandfather used to gas weld engine blocks with coat hangers. Send it!
Many moons ago (mid 70's) I used to do some repair and paint work on motorcycles at cookies cycle joint in sw Florida. Cookie, the owner/mechanic would let me work on my own bikes in exchange, using his equipment, tools, etc. One Saturday he was in the process of removing the power head from a little 2 cylinder 2 stroke evinrude he used on his little fishing boat. One of the pistons had a triangle shaped hole and the piece was still there. We decided to jb weld that sucker back in and see what happens. Lol We were laughing our asses off as we did it. After gluing it in, and letting it sit all week, I filed it smooth and we reassembled it. Damned thing fired right up, ran fine! He used that thing for 3 years before he gave it to his nephew. Don't know what happened to it after that, but 3 years for the price of jb! I hope that hemi runs like a scalded dog, you go Tony! I recommend to everyone to shop windshield prices. Back when I was restoring my Dart down in Florida I found a local installer that put the windshield in, including glass and install ( they just "rubber in") for $159.00. 3 years ago I had a flat bed semi served off the road a bit on I75 kicking up rocks. One of which cracked my windshield. I couldn't catch the sob because of traffic. Safelite wanted $475 to replace it! I asked, why so much? They answered, because it's a Lexus. I said, it's just a piece of friggin glass! They told the classic fib, "you won't get a better price". I found a local installer right in town. $200, tinted, no waves!
Love the Monty Python And The Holy Grail reference! Just remember, when everything was said and done the Black Knight (aka John Clesse) was a bloody stump! NONE SHALL PASS...
a top hat sleeve is what you need for that repair. the head gasket will seal on the sleeve flange to eliminate the compression from leaking down to the crack and then you don't have to have a lip at the bottom for the sleeve to sit on. put it in with green lock tight mounting compound, and do your 1/2 fill.
I've never repaired a block with flux core, but I have fixed large tractor cast iron exhaust manifolds that people ran into trees and tore mufflers off.
If it can support 75# mufflers bouncing around fields, it can fix that block.
. . Tony , I'm glad that You do what You do for all the world to see . "Keep On Doing What Ya Doing, Love it Bro !
Awesome score on the Distributor! Cant wait to see the plans for the HEMI...
I search the classifieds aka Marketplace, Craigslist and a few others you still find lots of gems...I picked up a stash of NOS Mopar parts from the 70's several weeks ago..Even a nos 1973 Cuda interior(strange I know).
My problem is I work a little(self employed)sit and search classifieds then go on youtube and go down rabbit holes(like now)..I work better in the evening as most people post in the day, afraid I will miss something..Plus I post several cars I have (small dealer)..Appointment only not open to the public, way better that way!
As for the Hemi block, seen it done especially in the late 80's and 90's with family members who raced from the 50's...I come from a farming/ranch family and YES welding a block works even farm equipment seen it done all the time and they run the hell out of those machines! Doesn't hurt to try it,might never be a issue or it might go BOOM!! Can't wait to see the plans for the HEMI..
I totally agree on the windshield thing.I've tried to replace a couple windshields myself. In the past and it's never ended well
My brother from another Mother. Kids like us still getting spring fever. Glad I'm not alone.
The little secret to give that block a chance is needle scaling, small, like 1 inch beads of weld while still being red hot. This disperses the tensions somewhat and makes new cracking less likely. Block definitely should be preheated.
Also nickel rods are a decent option for this particular case. Take your time and good luck.
I watch your show as much as I can. I grew up with mopars that's all I drove growing up my dad worked at a dodge dealer.i have a 65 coronet 440 convertible with a 273 with a 904 second owner restoration started 1990 10 yrs later it was ready to see the outdoors. I'm having a problem with it staying in park from the first rebuild to the most recent one. Ps the parking brake works really great. I have tried everything still not staying in park........ don't mean the change the subject love your show
YES!! He's welding up a little more of the 426 Hemi! I knew it!! "All Boogered Up" is slowly starting to take shape! I love it!!
I’ve heard allot of better welders than me say cast iron can’t be welded. The two cast iron things I’ve welded are still working fine 10 and 20 years later. One is the part of a drill press table that wraps around the post so the table can move and the other is a cast iron Holdfast for a woodworking bench that gets blasted by a hammer every time it’s used.
Nice here too in N Texas - unfortunately have pneumonia. Rains are coming here too, hopefully we all get both productive and cathartic springtimes
Handy hint, paint your roof the same blue as oprahs on Maui
Live to Ride, live another to Ride more!
A shop I worked at had to weld up a serious crack on one of our punch presses. Boss used flux core and between weld passes he would pein the weld with a needle scaler. Good luck on the hemi.
Eh pa, the frequency of authenticity flows through your broadcasts over some years now thanks - cheers to that! Strength! GODspeed!
Dave's auto center shown someone doing cast iron welding on a rare Indian v8 that dropped a rod. They basically casted the part that was missing you should go check it out
Tony, on your red Jeep, if the instrument cluster reads NOBUS, unplug the crank sensor with the key turned on. You should hear relays click as system wakes up. When crank sensor shorts out internally, it takes the bus/network down. I’ve experienced this many times as a Chrysler Jeep tech.
I work with some welders that can weld up the crack of dawn LOL Turbines and boilers etc , that block is a piece of cake
It's a lot colder here in WA but man it is beautiful out here in central WA. My view of Mount Adams has been glowing the past few days
I can tell that you love what you're doing! Your enthusiasm is contagious. Please don't ever change!
I found that you really need to shop around on windshields and some times you can catch a deal if they install the glass.
What happened to the Mission Impossible 318 build?
The original concept has been thrown out the window & as such the whole build seems to be a complete waste of time & money. We will have learned nothing about what can be achieved with basic, low dollar stock parts & some good old hot rodder ingenuity. So sad. What a waste.
In relation to the original concept it became more like Mission Unaffordable
Check UNITY Motorsports...
No, sorry guys, John wasn't involved, my mistake!
Oh yeah this is going to be fun
What about the Charger?
You're going to see waves in that reconditioned Chinese windshield.
Here in Taxachussets it's 51*, overcast, a little raw and miserable out, and I won't even be checking my leaky valve cover for flange flatness. But don't worry, tomorrow will suck too.
I was recently at a windshield shop and was surprised to see many replacement windshields made in China. Don't know how prevalent this is, but I would prefer one made in the USA.
UTG have you ever tried using MIG wire for flux core welding instead of the regular flux core wire? I mistakenly used it to weld up ramps for my trailer and when I went back to using flux core wire I realized the MIG wire was penetrating far far better than the flux core. Literally couldn't weld the thick metal that my ramps were made out of with the flux core but the MIG worked good. The 8' ramps are holding great so far and I've had a truck go up them like it wasn't even there.
I just seen a video a minute ago and they said something about "fusion welding" a cast iron Pontiac block.
Love the experiment!
As for your mission improbable project this guy I use to know hosted a formula 1200 series we had up in Canada years ago, they were I think van demon chassis and 1200cc vw air-cooled beetle engines. The class itself stated the engine had to be completely stock and same for the chassis as it came from the manufacturer. He had told me all the ways they were able to modify these anaemic engines like buying a set of 50 pistons at a time, weighing every single one of them to achieve close to even weight and returning the rest as blueprinting was prohibited. Carb modifications, valve lashing, somehow shaving 3 pounds of alloy per rim to reduce unsprung mass they would crack easily after that tho, shaving excess weight off the spinals or any part of the chassis or suspension that was excess. I don't remember how much per lap the times went down but it was significant, by the time we had left the series he told me there wasn't a square inch of that car that was overlooked, anything that could be altered probably was. It was common for the leaders to lap the back of the field to give you an idea of how fast their refined stock vehicles were compared to an actual stock vehicle. Keep in mind all the components were all the originals but also had to fool the tech inspectors, this is why I'm so excited for that jeep, I know circuit racing is different from drag racing but the concept is identical, can't wait to see it making passes!
Get a couple bbq grills off marketplace use them to heat the whole block and keep it hot while welding
He's, already addressed that. Cold, welding cast iron, with pourous flux core, is perfectly fine.
@@strokermaverickas an automotive machinist and ex diesel head welder I can 100% say it's not ok and this is nothing more than turning junk into crap.
I love your attitude !! Here is the BIG issue you will run into.... Hard spots in the weld area ! The cast iron has very high carbon content (in graphite form) When you weld it like this, the carbon / iron mix chills down quickly and will be harder than chicken lips !! This is the deal breaker, when an attempt is made to bore through tis area to sleeve it.
The rest of your idea is awesome, and 3/4 fill is fine on the street. I ran a Chevy block 2/3 fill for close to 100,000 HARD miles, finally killing it with a dropped valve.
Looks like the machine shop will have to deal with that!😂
What would normally be the fix for this? Could a mold be made, for example, based on the opposing cylinder, and then filled with melted iron (as in pour the iron as you would into a regular mold)?
Would it catch onto the older surface if maybe the entire block was heated heavily beforehand?
Or do the older and newer metals not mix well (different expansion rates afterwards that would just lead to another rupture)?
The key with cast iron is understanding that it has a very high carbon content. This carbon is what causes hardness in the heat affected zone when welding. when professionally welding cast iron, the part to be welded is heated to a very high temperature, often in an oven, then the (similar composition) filler metal is welded in, after which the part is baked for a time, then slowly cooled. This avoids hard spots and cracking, and the part can be easily machined.@@vtr0104
@@vtr0104 the normal fix is a new block, but I think this is more of a case of what you can get by with.
The correct procedure was outlined by the other guy. If you want to understand what is going on look into quenching and annealing steel on the knife making channels. It is the same process, but the cast iron weld will 'quench' in ambient temperatures conditions, so it always needs annealing.
You would need a pretty big kiln or such to do a v8 block, but it could be done.

Seeing that you're in middle Tennessee as well. I can say the storm is here unfortunately
Crapola!!
Holy crap, Uncle Tony is turning into ICWELD.😂
AWESOME DUDE...MOPAR 4 EVER.
Tony, I give you credit for attempting this. Iron is tricky to weld as you know. I wonder, what wire you are using? I never used flux core. To reduce cracking, preheat, weld then peen. I would also think it will need a sleeve, bore all 8 holes to be sure they are straight, line bore, mill decks. I will be watching progress on this. Thanks!
It can crack, warp, stretch and shrink all it wants to. The only job this weld has to do is hold the sleeve steady while the Hardblock cures. Nothing being done here affects the area between the main saddles and cam bores, which is the one place that stresses and distortions can become a real problem.
The clean-up work is all standard machine shop race prep.
what a score on that distributor!! that is some cool race history i bet...thanks tony!!
Don't be surprised if that cheaper windshield gives you fogging issues. Idk the reason but myself and others I know have had problems with cheaper glass. Running the defrost in Florida can be uncomfortable
That looks ph f'd. Insanely great repair if it lasts. Good job
How did the 426 Hemi stitching / weld repair go? Anymore videos on this block?
You Are the best Tony
Kudos for trying. It looks beyond repair, but what do I know? Curious as to how sonically sound it will be. I guess we'll all find out. Good luck.
He's the Hemi whisperer. It'll run.
Curious what you like to use for block fill? Great score on the distributor!
the hemi whisperer.
What do you think about converting the Harbor Freight flux core welder to DC current to be able to use DCEN? Harbor freight cheaps out with making those welders run on AC current. With a 20 dollar bridge rectifier, it could be a DC welder. Just something Im considering doing my hobo freight flux core. Thank you for all you do Uncle Tony, you are an inspiration.
I have the cheap HF Titanium flux core welder. I want an ac/dc TIG welder. The Eastwood looks okay.
You'll get better, cleaner beads rectified. Just make sure your bridge is rated double on both voltage and amperage (so like 150/250). You could go really nuts and add a 24 volt starter relay too, and make it a dead torch.
Had a customer that bought a 70 hemi cuda in pieces. The block looked like a road map with all the welds but it was a one of....🙄😁
That Ivan Dutton guy over on Shed Racing (go watch it, seriously down to earth guy that gets to work on all kinds of exotics like Ferraris and prewar Bugattis etc) he likes using spares from other makes and models to make things work before he will go out and spend money engineering something. Silver Soldered a crankshaft together for a rare prototype 2 cylinder Mini engine they found just the block for, It only has to run for a few minutes on a stand at car shows, but it's holding together great so far.
Maybe name the Hemi block "Project Black Knight" 😅
UTG is taping the freeze plug holes and putting pipe plugs still a thing?
I want to see that block fill video .
So, based on your accent, I just assumed you were in the Northeast. Shout out from Clarksville!
I'd be concerned when welding that it would pull the carbon from the cast iron and making the welds hard. Are there plans on doing any heat treat to make sure your not to hard to machine the bores?
Use cast iron welding rods on the cast Tony, just heat it up
Machining will be a challenge I am sure there is a meens to doing that and yup naysayers it should work I hope it works Tony and ya prove them wrong curious soes the flux core get as hard as solid wire do you know ?

the "what do you have to lose" 426
Grab a titanium 170 from hf get more heat in the weld
Tony; I can't get answers locally to this question from your LA vs Magnum block video: Are the 308 LA roller head cracks like the magnum and sort of often safe to ignore?
Anyone seen the LAST 1 440 someone posted on reddit? Looks like it might be the last one from 78 and whoever built it wrote LAST 1 in the lifter valley.

Hemi
@@AtZero138 It means "God is Gracious " so that's pretty spot on for the Hemi engine too.. haha. UTG do you have a set of main caps for a hemi I'm trying to save one and need caps I know it will have to be line bored but really need caps if you got any or a lead on any

Totally superior technology, but it means you gotta throw out this one year of your fleet model.
No way in hell that block will ever run.
we got storms today
Between Uncle Tony, Dr Art, Kiwi, VGG, etc. Is there any way to tear out the computers and go analog on a "modern" car, or do we have to swap out the whole drive train with a '70's something? Front wheel drive is probably another can of worms. Just wondering for armageddon type times....
That block repair reminds me of these channels that show mechanics in Pakistan and Africa doing incredible repairs on garbage parts.
Exactly
What is meant by 3/4 fill?
Sometime the cheaper windshields are clear with little to no uv protection. If you're air conditioned you'll be ok, if not you might cook.
Ask me how I learned this lol
Should called ralphy fixs would fixxed your windsheid for 150
Yep already subscribed to Dr Arts channel hes a dog lover to and I think deep down hes a ford man. 😁🇬🇸👍
Yup car stuff seems silly right now in the spring.
Yeah! Ride motorcycles!
New pic for the "Put down the welder" meme. Thanks Tony!
The big issue I see here is you likely made very hard spots at the jumction of the weld and the cast iron. This will be nasty on cutters if a machine shop were to ever try to actually machine those bores.
There’s a company in Hialeah that removes your skim for a fee. I put a carb on my 99 xj and they did a goojob
Whatever happened to the Charger?
😢on one of your jeeps will there be a street free like vehicle with a 440 with maybe a 6-71 blower or 8-71 what ever you can scrounge from the gm 2 stroke diesel engines it may be way harder to day to find said blower cheap but man the look of the blower and drive in the engine bay is cool don't you think a tunnel ram is ok the blower
Would have shock appeal oh ya. Maybe you could do one in model form I'm sure your bud Steve could hel you with that to get all the plastic parts and would be way cheaper a older wagoner would cool as well.
Following the Hemi repair...very interesting!
It won't work.

But we don't need all the king's men, just Uncle.
