Adopting A Cat From A Shelter - Animal Rescue in Tulsa, Oklahoma

  • Adopting a cat from a shelter is something I've never done. So I'm sharing my animal adoption experience at our local animal shelters here in Tulsa, Oklahoma to hopefully inspire others to adopt from their local rescue shelters as well. My cat Sparta was originally given to me by a friend who got him from a little girl who went door to door trying to find him a home before her mother took him to the pound. My cat Loki (RIP) was adopted through an independent cat rescue which operated on weekends through Petsmart.

As of January 1st the law here in California is pets (dogs, cats and rabbits) can be sold in pet stores but they have to be provided by a shelter not breeders. Hopefully the rest of the states will make it law soon.

The cats in our Pet Stores come from local shelters. They select several cats to go to the store, and people adopt them. It's just another site to expose them to possible homes. It's different for dogs because people want a full-blooded breed, and those can come from puppy mills.

EDIT: I have now adopted my very own black cat and I named Lynx.
If the odds are the cat is adopted by someone else, I highly recommend adopting a black cat. Because of the stupid superstitious belief of black cats being bad luck, and the fact that most people would rather own a cat with pretty colors and patterns, black cats are often the last to be adopted and the first in line to be euthanized. I find that total bs. I've met many black cats that are so freaking friendly and give the best hugs when your down. All cats of every breed and color deserve the same amount of love.

Also, they get adopted a lot on Halloween, but then get tossed aside so places don't put them up around that holiday much, anymore for that reason. I only adopt black cats because usually they are the least wanted.

that's how i got my cat. Grade A problem child. I work at a vet hospital thats associated with a shelter. we are part of a program that does emergency boarding for displaced pets (house fires, moving, owners in hospital ect) sometimes the owners situation leads to having to surrender their pet and they have to go over to the shelter. My cat was one of those pets. When he first got to us he was a demon. could barely open the door he was so aggressive. After a month or so he settled down and became comfortable with us, and he was super sweet. but he also has health issues. Overweight, dental disease, urinary problems. When we heard he was going to be going over to the shelter i just had to take him home. I knew he had no chance over there. he's cost me a ton in vet bills trying to deal with all the health issues, but 10/10 worth it.

@@silverstar1178 you're an angel. God bless you. I know most people would want a relatively problem-free cat for ease of mind but since the point of adopting is to save lives (imo at least), why not go the extra length and get a cat who truly deserves it, if you can afford it? Adopting just for the sake of cuteness really doesn't bode well with me & it's kinda unfair.

That's what I did a few days ago. I adopted a cat with one eye and torn ears, because I knew she would be the last one to be adopted out of all the other cats. She's been here for a few days now, but she's very cautious, scared and hides during the day. She doesn't trust anyone and doesn't let me pet her, but i'm hoping that will change in the future.

I adopted a one eyed baby and she is wonderful! No one would even look at her after noticing she had one eye and she was the only kitten left in the animal shelter days before Christmas because of this (it’s important to note that we were not adopting a Christmas cat, we had field mice problems but it was just around that time). The point of the story is that I adopted her and she is beautiful and wonderful and I love her. The same happened with the first cat we adopted (deemed unwanted because she had kittens prior and people assumed she was old) and our third cat (feral and distrustful of humans originally, but a complete cuddle bug now). We picked the cats that were there for almost a year and were rewarded by it

I can't say its been easy, but very rewarding seeing her spirit come round and trust me, still fearful, but I can pick her up/hold her/ get her purring- things that didnt seem possible. Good luck! That lynx point seems lovely, hope it works out!

      @grytlappar Před 5 lety +3

That's so kind of you! Some animals just get bypassed, for no real reason (I can see a cat being semi-feral being a reason though. 😉) For one thing, have most of you been to a big shelter? It's not _so_ bad in the cats' area-although they _would_ hear the dogs, considering how incredible their hearing is, and get nervous. But in the dog area, it's bark-bark-bark, all day long. You can imagine how stressful! Even for us, just walking in there (and leaving). And some dogs-understandably-don't deal well in that environment. They might change completely once they're out of it! But in the shelter they look nervous, withdrawn, which is def not going to make a 'sale.' So they stay there, maybe for years, which makes it even that much sadder, as they are the ones who fare worst there. 😥 So next time maybe, those of you who are looking for a dog, take another look at the shy dogs? They might even be a different dog if you take them outside.
Then there's the 2nd category: black dogs and cats. They don't grab you as much, do they? They're not "Ooh, such a pretty color," or "What cool markings!" Or, if it's a big dog, they can look a little bit... scary to people. (I know, but it's subconscious). HOWEVER. These days, people have turned into little monsters. Theirs is not a life lived unless they can post it on social media. So the _shelters are full of black cats and dogs because they don't photograph as well._ Can we turn back the clock please, because it's all bloody going downhill.

I have volunteered at a shelter for 4+ years and gave in and adopted finally last year. My son has a soft spot for black cats and geriatric cats because they're overlooked. So we adopted our 4th cat, a black 13 year old. Then a couple months later her sister came back in. She had been adopted separately, but her new owner became ill and couldn't keep her. They had been together 13 years, I couldn't resist. So our 5th cat is black, geriatric, with a heart condition. And is the sweetest thing, her favorite thing to do is sit on someone's lap.

A tip I learned the hard way. Do NOT look for the same colorations as your previous dog / cat / pet. You wont find the fur baby you lost anywhere out there. He's not there. Look for something different, and you can find one. I looked for months. Finally a friend looked at me and said - "Sassy's not out here, you wont find her." I did not realize what I had been doing. Once I was over that, I got very lucky.

My family has accidentally ended up with the "same" cat 3 times in a row. Claude was orange & white (given to my mom by her college boyfriend). After he passed she said "okay not another orange & white cat." We go to "just look" at kittens and end up carrying a baby orange & white one home, Roscoe. Roscoe developed many health issues (we suspect from stress from the puppy, also orange, we adopted a few months later) so we had to put him to sleep ): "Okay, NO more orange & white MALE cats!" & then our current cat, Oliver, followed my parents home from a walk and wouldn't leave so eventually we brought him inside and he's ours. I've moved out for school and have been fostering cats for the local humane society - temporarily having a little orange & white, male kitten just felt right, it felt like home

But a year on they are 2 of the loveliest girls going. One of them even grooms our dog. I know doing this is not an option for everyone but our circumstances allowed us to spend the time and effort needed to offer them a chance and I would do it again as it is so rewarding to see the changes in them.

I remember when I adopted my two little boys. There names are Timmy and Russell. The second I walked in the adoption room I saw both of them and I new they were mine. They were these two little shy unconfident kittens. They had a brother but, he was more confident and honestly cuter (I mean all cats are adorable but ya know what I mean). Also Timmy and Russell were bonded unlike the other brother. So I just knew that the other brother cat would get adopted quickly so I took Timmy and Russell. They are my whole world even though they were not the cutest more friendly catsI love them with all my heart. There confidence has improved sooo much now they will sleep with me and barley let me walk away from them!
The lesson I learned was that even though the cat may not be the cutest most loving affectionate cat. They will always be your little baby. So please the next time you adopt a new cat don’t always go for the cutest one and try to go for the one that has the least chance to get adopted or has been there the longest.

No kill shelters are great, but municipal shelters cannot be no kill as they have to take in all animals, both surrenders and stray and there is simply not enough room. Sad, but until people become responsible animal owners and spay/neuter their animals that is the way it's going to be. Our local shelter must also take in all kinds of animals and I've seen chickens, pigs, horses, etc. there as well as ferrets, bunnies, hamsters and other so-called "pocket pets".

And so, walking around, of course the one cat who really grabbed me was Fjodor (then Bo; he's _so_ not a Bo). Who was written as a "Leader of the band." 😂 Also: He is a very active cat. He needs active play with pole toys etc at least 15 min a day"-which was essential info for anyone who adopted him, or they wouldn't have known he was a handful! But he's the best. Quite something. She knew exaxtly who to introduce me to. He jumped out, scars and all, and started rubbing up against me. He was the first cat she showed me and he was on his way home half an hour later.
He now can't get enough back massages, good food, and chin rubs. And he spends most of his time nestled against my leg or lying on me or getting under my feet. An honorary dog, but litter trained. He's awesome!
Do I care how many teeth or toes he's missing from his time on the street? Nope. He's a bundle of barely conditional love. He's a senior citizen who prefers to hide that fact. And even if he doesn't want to snuggle then and there, that'll change in 5 minutes when he walks back over.

I went into the shelter with the intention of bringing home an older cat. Well that was 4 years ago and I adopted a little boy who was 4 at the time. Yup he is the King. Bothers with me when he feels like it. Gives affection when he feels like it. Sleeps wherever he feels like sleeping and is very opinionated. He allows me to sleep in my bed as long as he gets most of the pillows. He is a tough King. Why do I allow this. My house, I pay the rent, buy his food, treats and toys. I allow this because I just love him more than I can say. I am a slave to this green eyed beauty and would be lost without him. Very happy to be owned by this brate.

I'm 4 minutes in and I'm just crying...All those cats in those small cages...My cat is a rescue cat but where I live the cats live in homes with volunteers, and they are only euthanized if they're really sick. So I've never been to this kind of shelter, and it's heart breaking to watch this video.😢
Edit. Ok, the last ones looked like much better places. I just hope all of those cats find loving homes.

My kitty just passed away because of lymphoma. She was 14. So about 84 in cat years. Aurora was her name. At Christmas I’m gonna adopt a new kitten and name her Catrina Aurora in honor of my little angel kitty. Her ashes are next to my bedside with a picture of her. She was a Thai breed, and a Balinese mix. I really miss her. One like, equals one more day to my new kitten. And that Aurora is doing better in Kitty Heaven.

hat's how i got my cat.

I adopted my cat, Kirby, a little over a year ago. I honestly never thought I'd own a pet, as I have enough trouble just taking care of myself. But honestly, it's the best thing I ever did. She fills me with joy every time I see her when I get home from work, and how she gets all excited and quickly trots over to me. I used to think people were BSing me when they said they could tell their pet(s) showed appreciation after being rescued from neglect or abuse. But now, I believe it too!

I adopted a return cat. The people said he had litter box issues. He was a biggest cat I ever seen . Part Maine coon and part tabby. Got him home and he ran under a chair. Three hours later he went right to the litterbox. Now he hogs the chair and lives like a king. Best investment ever.

Lucky Lex well, it took three years to get the macaw from a neglectful situation. Talked and gently talked until they gave in. I’ve had her for over 30 years now! The ‘tiel’s owner - long story short - died and family did not know what to do so I took it it. That was back in 2002! The cats are way younger than the birds and the macaw is the smartest of the lot My city has a bird rescue in it as well as other animal shelters.
