    The only thing I felt was missing was comparing it to a super fancy proper disc wheel. To see if it's worth the money for the convenience of having 2 different wheels, without need to remove the covers everytime you need them for an uphill race.

    I'm in the process of creating a rear wheel disc treatment for my singlespeed. Last night was the first experiment, so far so good. My plan is to stretch window screen over rim, then impregnate the fine mesh with some type of varnish. I started with a 1m ×1m sheet of window screen that I cut a hole in center to fit over axle. I then took an old front wheel I don't mind messing up for this experiment. On said rim I half mounted (just one bead) an old shabby tire to hold screen in place while I stretched it out. This worked well, but later realized rope wrapped around rim worked better, in addition, the rope can be tightend. Doing this actually pulled the screen nice and flat and taught. Now keep in mind this is just an experiment. Next I brushed on Mod Podge, a clear glaze used to preserve completed puzzles. I hoped it would be thick enough to fill the holes in mesh, but after a few coats I knew I needed something heavier. I'm gonna try urethane wood varnish next. I went out today to find the perfect thing. A fellow pointed me to an epoxy product that will actually harden. So I might try that. It would be cool if the disc turned out totally translucent. Attaching this skin to my rear wheel will be simpler on account of I only run a front brake on this bike, meaning I can affix to rear wheel braking surface.

    It’s a good idea, I tried making this a few years ago, making it isn’t too much hassle I’d say biggest hassle was cutting a decent circle with a Stanley knife and gluing it into a cone shape like he shows. It did make me quicker but as I took it off and used it again for a few TTs it ended up warping and wouldn’t go flush again the spokes. I think it was down to the cutting and coning. If I did it again I’d try to glue the cone a bit better and maybe store it flat on the floor somewhere I suppose so it keeps its shape. Not sure its something that will last lots of seasons.

    • @flosa1995
      @flosa1995 Před rokem

      If you use ABS you can actually cut up a few pieces of ABS and let these pieces rest in acetone, the acetone will turn it into what the 3d printing community calls "ABS glue", this is perfect for glueing ABS parts together since it basically first melts the contact ABS piece and then "welds" itself to it
      This would work perfect for these wheel covers!

As others have noted, 57 kph is not a typical speed, especially for a triathlete (maybe for a world class time trialist), so the tailwind must've been really something. I'm going to sound like a douchebag, I loved this video regardless, but a consultant from GCN might've been in order ;)

    When anything is held together by tape it's not going to be about instantaneous failure but endurance failure. Still wouldn't trust anything held together by a layer of tape for an olympic much less ironman bike segment distance. Probably fine for sprints and stuff but if the tape lets go on a humid day after an hour or two of racing and has the potential to slice up your leg (not sure if he finished up the edges) or turn into a kite or just a massive wheel jamming possibility... is the 2-4 minutes you might save in the best outcome worth it?
