Never competitive on bicycles, but just daily-driving motorcycle I've seen what wind does to a motorcycle with solid rims. "Disc" wheeled Harleys were a popular aesthetic choice for a while, but when slammed into by Santa Ana Winds it would force them across the road tires screaming as they tried to fight the wind with out suddenly falling over when the gust ended. Even with "normal" rims the wind would shove me across the lane when the gusts hit. Quite the pucker moment.
I think the cross-sectional area on those bicycles is much more - I don't imagine anyone riding a dual disc bicycle would stay upright in Santa Ana winds even in neighborhoods.

The front was, wait for it, 24inch! Planned it for a long time, so it went together well, looks cool, seems effective, and gives no trouble. I made a test cover first, taking what I learned to build "prototype II". Wrapped it in carbon 'fibber' vinyl wrap too. Looks real. I kinda wanna fit the other one to the front just to experience it.

I had a disc on my front wheel on my BMX bike. I did a wheelie right as I was hit by a strong side-wind and my front wheel got blown side-ways and I flew off the road. I would race with the disc but soon realized it was dangerous. If I were to be hit sideways by a strong gust while in mid-air off a jump, I could get very injured or killed. It did look cool and my bike had a cool drum humming sound but that also meant my competitors could hear me coming as I tried to swoop them.

  • @MRR-qv3bw

This is pretty awesome to see y'all experimenting with disk! We/...some of us.... run carbon fiber rims on our bikes and recently have been experimenting with carbon disc mounted on our rear wheels for aerodynamics to get top speed. It really works at higher speeds roll racing between 160-215mph the gains have been backed with Dragy data! My bike would top out in 9/10ths mile at 209mph and with rear disc I'm hitting 212-213 mph back to back. I had to remove the carbon wings off my bike because they caused over 45lbs of down force at 195mph which scrubbed off mph. I really enjoyed the video and learning just how much stuff transfers over between our bikes, its insane how far technology has pushed us in the past 15+ years.

I rode frontdiscs on 2 bikes with 20Inch front wheels. 1 bike rode fine no issue, 1 bike was slightly uncomfortable. The geometry of the steering is very important for the handling in crosswinds. I am really thinking about testing this out !
Thing is that I think I may get away with it because I run 820mm bars on my commuter but its probably what will cause me to crash ;o

Suggestion for a video: a dinglespeed ride. Got 36/14 and 32/18 on my commuter, works pretty well with these cheap shimano BMX cogs and their very long teeth.

Pressure is directly proportional to surface area. BMX wheels are a lot smaller therefore pressure is a lot less.

Francis, it might be interesting to test this setup with the new set of headset bearings that don't need lubrication because the balls are encased in some kind of solid silicone. The drawback is that these bearings are actually slow, but in a case like this, it would be perfect to dampen a bit the twitchy nature of the front end. Big advantage, you never need to service them, ever ! And they also have a lifetime warranty.
GCN Tech, a while back, showed the article describing these on their "Hot Tech" segment, and I thing the new Colnago C68 has these.
Couldn't find them on the net, and can't find the video GCN Tech (Ollie and Alex) talked about those.
Keep up the testing, very very interesting and a lot of laughs.

What about using a UCI illegal old front Trispoke road wheel. PS. I had one of those bolt on disc thingies, 25 years ago, but I gave up using it because of embarrassment.
PSS. Try riding with that disc and Tri bars.
