Hey Kuncan, you did what most people don't when referring to "The Matrix", you actually were specific & I differentiated the types.
Like how the entertainment industry took certain things that were real and added science fictional aspects, therefore "twisted" the reality / reality. (That logic can be applied to everything in life)
They blur the lines. But I'm pretty sure there really are people sending CRYPTIC messages.
I've particularly seen it on Twitter and Instagram often over the past 2 years since coming back to them after a few years break. My observations are that even on social media people are sending indirects which is basically, encrypting messages.

I think the appeal of the red pill is that its presented as a 'choice', and something to achieve in the film but again they are missing the whole point. The option is an illusion, there is no option. The Wachowskis make that so obvious and its kinda sad how it got twisted into something so awful
I've grown cynical about movies with anything beyond surface level messages because now I just worry what ridiculous message weirdo reactionaries are going to take away from them. Fight club too, dear lord, the MENTALLY ILL TERRORIST CULT LEADER IS NOT MEANT TO BE ASPIRATIONAL!
Good point - I think there also missing the core part of the movie which is that leaving the matrix fucking sucks. You might become a cool super hero within the matrix but outside of that you have to live in a dystopian hellscape with no sun and disgusting food and giant robots constantly trying to kill you.
It's a strong metaphor for the external dangers of coming out, vs the internal pain that comes from suppressing and hiding who you are. Right wingers who use the matrix concept seem to think of "breaking free" only as a form of liberation and empowerment. There's no room in their ideology for freedom that comes at a personal cost, to them freedom means always being the one on top
I hope that doesn't come across like I disagree with you about the option being an illusion - the matrix has a lot of philosophical layers imo

I have only recently seen people actually referring to others as NPCs online. I realized it was insulting, but I didn’t know the background of it and am now absolutely horrified at the lack of empathy involved. 🤢
I don't know if it's just a lack of empathy tbh though. I mean yeah it takes pretty low empathy to literally imply other people aren't real lol, but on top of that it is kind of difficult to actually understand that everyone feels as deeply as you do and has as many thoughts emotions and experiences as you do. Or maybe that's just me lol I get overwhelmed when I think too deeply about how much consciousness there is on this planet. I can see how it'd be easier for me to just say everyone else is an NPC without internal universes as vast as mine

@NGo TeMNa It is still dehumanizing tho, because once you move people into an other based on you thinking you have all the answers, then you become emboldened and justified in all your actions, and as someone whose people have a history and present of being othered and people who believed they knew better literally gutting my continent, I know the long-standing consequences of it. Yeah it's people online now, but as we've seen with people like the mass shooter in New Zealand, it only takes one person who takes the sentiment to heart. And history supports that with the likes of Hitler, King Leopold, Cecil John Rhodes and countless others who did harmful things and had enough supporters to keep doing them.

The whole 'matrix' idea has always felt to me like someone read the first few sentences of an article about socialization and then just... never looked into it any further than that

Agree heavily with you. As someone who has suffered from OCD my whole life, existential OCD and the fear of being stuck in the matrix by myself has always been the most paralyzing fear because there's no way of actually proving it to be false. Seeing people trying to profit off of that fear and get clout is as devious as it can get. If social media is doing one thing, it's slowly separating us as a species and isolating us.

I watched The Matrix movies and i realized that people like Andrew Tate and Sneako never talks about the sequels. The reason why i believe is that the sequels questions the ideas of the first one. In the second iiirc there was this one traitor in the real world that thinks The Matrix is the solution to all the problem, this means that taking the red pill isn't enough(could be me but i think this is supposed to be a reference to people like Andrew Tate & Sneako)
At the time, people like Andrew Tate weren't popular and the mansphere was... At least not as prominent as today

Yeah, the wachowskis actually regretted the first movie. They looked back on it as their cringe immature punk rock phase so to speak. The movie is pretty damn problematic and people like Andrew Tate and sneako are the exact type of people that movie would mostly appeal to.
Essentially the movie correctly pointed out real social dynamics but then offered a very very bad prescription for dealing with those dynamics. Society suppresses people for who they are so they can be functional in the larger system, true....but to treat everyone in the system as hostile agents to your your true self and burning the system down is not a viable or appropriate reaction.

It’s only an allegory for estrogen for people who view breaking from societal molds as changing their gender. I do not feel constrained by my gender, but I do feel constrained by other aspects of our social construction. Making my “red pill” different than someone else’s. This is why the trans allegory was not obvious until they transitioned. You can tell that for them, it was about gender, but they created a story that had the ability to mean something different to each individual, which is the core of transgender rights movements. It’s less about the gender change or dysphoria, and more about living as you choose

It's exactly what is appealing about conspiracy theories too. You get to feel smarter and above everyone else, because you're enlightened and they're not.
I don't agree that the aim is to make people feel clever. The aim is to give validation and identity to the aimless and unvalidated and then tie that identity and validation to pleasing the manipulator. In this case the the targets are the poor, lonely and frustrated men. So they sell them and identity of being a rich manly man that's gets a lot of bitches and is satisfied with life. Then they say you have to do x or you are not actually the person we said you are, you are exactly what you fear you are and hate yourself for being.
It is actually the most common and effective form of manipulation used in way more than just get rich quick schemes. It's what groomers do, the core of state propaganda, cults and religions, sex traffickers... etc. It is the most effective tried and true tactic for manipulation.
The catch is that the person has to actually want to be the thing you are trying to sell. So people that don't actually want to be that thing or have a healthy awareness of themselves don't fall for it. We just stand back amazed and confounded at those that fall for it and see the manipulators for what they are.
Religions do the same thing too.
I feel like the feeling of being more clever or special than the others comes from feeling that they are lacking in a type of way, that could be that they have it harder understanding/following todays progressive ideas and usually lack of education.

This one hits close to home. In 2020 I was living alone away from home and overcoming a substance use disorder. I was slipping in and out of psychotic delusional symptoms, and both the Matrix conspiracy and “spiritual” tiktok had me in a chokehold. I was slipping in and out of reality in my own way, and was looking for ways to explain it. ie: i ‘ i’m stuck in a dream’ or i’m in a simulation” It’s much clearer to me now how these people feed off of others insecurities and vulnerabilities (for me it was severe dissociation) for personal gain. It’s very telling that there’s becoming such a pattern of people adopting these conspiracies to feel superior, or moreover, in control, especially in this bizarre, BIZARRE time we are living in. Very disappointing but also telling to see it also being weaponized as a tool of justifying flawed ideologies and oppression. :/

I remember there’s this creepypasta about a guy who’s depressed and then some guy offers him both a red pill, to escape the matrix, and a blue pill to not do that I guess.
The main character doesn’t take either and decides to fix his life. but he keeps the red pill as a reminder that there aren’t any quick fixes and what not.
But the twist, what makes the story a creepypasta and not a normal pasta, is that the group giving out the pills was a murder cult.

Empathy, once you really make the conscious effort to feel it, can be soul crushing. Imagining that billions of people exist in the world, and that each are an individual, is about as easy to wrap your head around as the number of stars in the universe. I can understand the appeal some people see in completely denying the reality of other humans, and not wanting to come to terms with the fact that they are not as unique or important as they want to believe. It doesn't make it ok that these beliefs and people exist but I can empathize with how they might gain traction. It's easy to let your mind become vulnerable when you don't know how to cope with the existential horror of being alive and will grasp anything to numb the feeling.

Empathy can indeed be incredibly tiring. I feel that a way to cope is to reel empathy in and supplant it with compassion. Empathy is a feeling, but compassion is an action. You don't need to fully empathize with the pains and ailments of an elderly person to help them cross the road or help them carry a heavy bag. A good doctor would burn up in a second in they would fully and completely empathize with each patient, but they would be a bad doctor if they don't treat each patient with compassion

I refuse to be called a nerd for knowing what the mathematical definition of a matrix is. I suck at maths. Matrices are basic knowledge and people should care about that.
It's kind of ironic that they think they're discovering the real, cruel world or something, as if they aren't just desperate to escape the actual real life. "Ahh all my problems don't matter because this isn't real, my boss is an NPC, the game is mine" no honey, you're facing trouble and can't properly process it. Some people become religious, some people start believing in alternate universes or anything else.
This world is the only one we know of. Escaping it for a little while by using fiction is great- but you need to know how to separate the two.

I partly blame "cringe culture" for all this. Instead of seeking out a healthy hobby they enjoy due to the fear of being "cringe" they all turn to each other, harboring a toxic mindset. Cringe culture was a mixture of all the worst things society had to offer. All the -ism and phobia you could think of. Anything and everything was over analyzed and bullied. Cringe culture mixed with toxic masculinity created the perfect cocktail of disenfranchised lonely people scared to be themselves or do anything they enjoy. They wanted a community and friends, but they were too afraid to pursue anything they enjoy doing. Thus you have a large group of people afraid of doing anything they enjoy, malleable and waiting for a charismatic guidance figure to pop up. It made them easier to mold and radicalize.
I think a lot of modern issues on the internet honestly link back to 2015-2016 era cringe culture and anti SJW content. It all fits nicely and neatly, at least to me, as someone who was heavily into the internet since the early 2000's. Things were just different after that.
Also I love how they say that society is all the same, but by their beliefs all men are hardwired biologically and basically a hive mind. Their logic is literally never consistent. They're fine with people being the same or "NPC's" as long as it's the version they want it to be.

The matrix was used in my social psychology course to talk about the intersection of race, class and gender in how society treats you which I thought came pretty close to how the writers meant it (as a trans allegory bc it fits into the gender part of the matrix when accounting for non cisgender identities) but this version of it is so messed up.

it's like alllllll rooted in 'needs', we are not having our needs being met, period. We struggle to eat, to work, to socialize, to find time,to have support and security etc etc, it's all needs not being met. You can't self help, or even have others help you, if you don't know what your specific needs are. Atm the most reliable way to learn is through therapy, learning emotional intelligence, how to reflect on thoughts and actions. And then praying that you have access to get the things you need, which unfortunately -under capitalism- tends to not be the case.

The movie makes several references to Simulacra and Simulation, a book by French philosopher Jean Baudrillard. He did not like it very much, as he thought it was done in a ham-fisted way that subverted his intention. Yet I have never seen any of these "red-pillers" who can even begin to understand the symbolism.
If they for just a moment achieved a state where they could grasp what Simulacra and Simulation is about, it would destroy their shallow worldview and likely send them into deep depression.
