  • Every university has its traditions, and Rice University is no exception. O-Week, Beer Bike and Willy Week top the list of Rice's most well-known traditions, but in the university's nearly 100-year history, it's only natural for a few others to have developed along the way. From the humorous to the honored, these traditions are deeply entrenched in the life of the institution and shape the memories of students and alumni alike. In the spirt of this week's Homecoming festivities, Rice News takes a look at some Owl traditions.

The final line of this video reminds me of a comment by then-president George Rupp at my matriculation ceremony in 1986: The ethos of Rice University is "work hard, party ferociously." (Hanszen 90)

My dad went to Rice and he knows about the shaving cream run. He told me a story about it. Word leaked about when the next run would be and another group of guys (my dad wasn't part of either group) gathered in the quad with fire hoses. You read that right! Fire hoses! When the runners came through they got sprayed down with the fire hoses and were left completely exposed in the the quad in the middle of the night.
He also told me about the statue facing backward. He said it was a group of unknown physics students.
Some people have some crazy stories from school. I had one very weird "prank" that I saw. I say "prank" lightly, because I'm not 100% sure it was a prank or just are result of a crazy party decision. I did not go to RICE. However, my story could never compare to shaving cream streakers and a reversed statue. Then again I also went to college 30 years after my dad did so school rules are a bit stricter too.
