  • People with birthmarks, scars and other facial disfigurements are more likely to receive poor ratings in job interviews, according to a new study by researchers at Rice University and the University of Houston.

"Discrimination Against Facially Stigmatized Applicants in Interviews: An Eye-Tracking and Face-to-Face Investigation" was published online last month in the Journal of Applied Psychology and is one of the first studies to examine how individuals with facial blemishes fare in job interviews. The findings show that interviewers recalled less information about these candidates, which negatively impacted evaluations of the applicants.

"When evaluating applicants in an interview setting, it's important to remember what they are saying," Rice Professor of Psychology Mikki Hebl said. "Our research shows if you recall less information about competent candidates because you are distracted by characteristics on their face, it decreases your overall evaluations of them."

No. How about so many gorgeous people getting divorced. Because the guy just married because of woman look. The love is for her, just for her look. One time I was in Hotel in the swimming pool, and I see an woman having a lot difficult to walk and her looks was ok, and the husband always very caring, helping hear around. And right away I tell my boyfriend "look at the couple, this is real love. It's really easy to love gorgeous model. But this one is real love". People that relies solely on looks, is very shallow.

ala.ba7 Is not trying to say you suck nor am I trying to make you feel bad. But yep if you’re ugly then you don’t get treated well like good looking people. That’s why you don’t have a job cus you’re ugly.

      that's just stupid statement
what being ugly seems like u r lazy? isn't that stereotype supposed to be opposite ?
It's just stupid calling someone who is 'ugly', that is lazy
Everyone can feel and look beautiful if they want to
Somehow, in some way it is important but in another way, really it's, people are just being pathetic with those statements lol
      we are not kids anymore
I would never call anyone ugly or fat and similar, that's just the statement I am against for
People need to take criticism well and stop making excuses
For overweight ppl, some of them are actually smart, not lazy, beautiful
U present urself the way u want world to perceive u (:

People like pleasure and avoid discomfort. We derive pleasure from looking at beautiful things in general, the human body is just an specific example of that.

depends really. It may be attributed to factors like being incomptent but then i would also argue the less attractive you are the more likely you are to be perceived as incomptenet even if you are completely reasonable.

      @tutsecret499 Před 11 měsíci

So if you get in an accident fire, car accident, etc and affects to your looks to worse, so then you call yourself incompetent. So be more sensitive to other people because you don't know what can happen to you.@@georgemay1343

I am not perfect but I think the difference between me and most people is that I actually make an asserted effort to avoid the possibility of making people feel neglected or inherently inferior. People seem to be resistant to the realization that innate human physical appearance is a deciding factor for a lot of our initial thoughts and emotions towards people which normally result in subtle actions. . I actually try to make sure that people don't feel the way that others used to make me feel but most people are not that way. Nobody should feel as though they are penalized for innate difference. This is an evolutionary human flaw. We act according to our perceptions. Humans are revolted by foul smells(smell), pain(touch), irritating noises(hear), and repellent foods(taste) because these things come back negative on our senses. Why would this repulsiveness change when it extends to our sense of sight? It doesn't but do not forget that there are varying degrees of negativism on our sensory perception and we act accordingly. If you taste something that doesn't taste half bad or half good you might then just finish the meal and possibly never eat it again. What will you do if you taste something that gives you a vomiting sensation? you will likely spit it out. Same when it applies to appearance. Humans by in large are not barbaric enough to physically reject someone for being as we call "Physically unattractive". The reaction normally happens on a subconscious level and is infinitely more subtle, which is why people are able to deny this reality. We perceive the world through our senses and although we can not eradicate our sense of sight, we can make an asserted effort to suppress our biological inclinations and not let our fair mindedness interfere with our natural instincts.

Well, I'm on 50/50 here... You can hardly become a supermodel, cover girl etc. if you're not good looking, you attract fewer people etc. but there are other things to be put into consideration. Firstly - looks are relative. Someone will think you're super gorgeous while someone else is going to think you're super ugly. Another thing is your mindset. I've been better looking before but nowhere near as happy and content as I am now. People are also attracted to confidence and happiness which also go beyond looks.
