    Could planting trees be the solution to climate change? With the climate crisis gaining recognition around the world and climate strikes in full swing with hundreds of thousands of people taking to the streets in a plea for action against climate change, I figured it would be good to look at what might be the best solution to climate change: trees. Trees capture and store carbon, reducing the amount of CO2 in the air. Recently a study looked at the amount of trees we could plant on Earth, which lead to a lot of people thinking we could solve the climate change issue by planting a trillion trees. But this isn't exactly true. Find out why in my latest video!

      So, I dont know if you knew this but countries that have net growth on their forests yearly (almost every single first world country), are only able to do this because they use fossil fuels for heating their homes and giving them electricity. And you find data for this almost everywhere, some countries, smaller developing ones, either swear never to use fossil fuels or just don't import or have access to them. In all of those countries people have to use wood to heat & light up their homes, and also cook their food. Its literally because of fossil fuels that we even have an environment to save, if we were to have this number of humans on the earth and zero fossil fuels, the planet would face ecological destruction within years. Also did you know that as more carbon has been going into the atmosphere, plants have been on average growing faster? It scales directly, and it makes me as well as others think that if we were ever able to come out even on carbon emissions, eventually plant growth would catch up. Almost like debt.

  • @francoisrd
    @francoisrd Před 4 lety +126

    This was a very interesting video! I have two tangential points to make regarding the topic.
    First, planting/saving trees is good for dealing with carbon already in the atmosphere, but ultimately humanity will also need to cut our carbon emissions. That is, we can’t use planting trees as an excuse to keep emitting more carbon. After all, the Earth only has a fixed amount of surface area where trees can be planted, so this solution will eventually stop scaling.
    Second, trees can only remove carbon, not other pollutants (e.g. toxic waste, plastic, other greenhouse gases), from the environment. While removing carbon is a great step towards fighting the climate change aspect, protecting the environment as a whole requires even more effort.

    We need to enter a completely new epoch of human living,
    Specifically on the matter of carbon sequestrations, trees are your long term storage and a precious building material. In the short term along side massive tree planting we need to replace all fodder crops with those such as native american switch grass, which can feed animals but also can be turned into carbon rich soil for land regeneration. The great thing about those types of grasses is that in winter in pulls all of the nutrients out of the plant and into the roots so when you harvest the carbon husks, your not wasting mineral, so the land seldom, if ever needs fertilization.
    for us to use nature as the solution, we have to come at it holistically. we need to start transforming our agriculture land to permaculture style food forests. looking at what the native animals eat and what can grow in that region for human food. we also need to blend in lumber production trees for local building and crafting.
    we need to start thinking about simpler lives, where we form villages at the center of these permaculture zones, our economies could become local and mainly about keeping us with a full belly and a solid roof over our heads, said roof being log cabins and earthship style housing. we need to start living and breathing the natural world as our daily existence.
    whats it all for eh? we work our asses off for expensive housing and all the toys to try and stop us being miserable along the way.
    why cant people just be happy waking up in a lovely wooden lodge that you and your community built, that you will probably pass on to your children. spending some of your days working on food production and helping the community build itself, spending a few days studying to better your knowledge at the communal solar/shallow geothermal/wind powered internet 'library', and the rest of your time simply enjoying the good life.
    if enough of us turned to this way of living, with the help of experts in permaculture and ecology to guide our works, we could be living an almost utopia of simplicity and abundance. we make life hard for ourselves in the name of progress and growth. well I say we can live in harmony and let our growth hold for a while in the realms of acedemia. we rush to fast to implement everything we discover and its killing the world, lets just chill. local living and working and food production so we dont need to travel and shop at range. we need to learn to live with less of everything, but we gain time to enjoy health and clean air and water and abundant food and knowledge.
    this will help hold our species in check whilst we get serious about space colonization. were burning our bridges on the way. space will be lonely if we kill off all the plants and animals.

      With this pretty much 100%. Land use is so critical yet so wasteful in America. A great field crop is hemp, which can provide human food & livestock feed at the same time while also being a building & clothing material which uses less fertilizer & pesticides than the cotton, corn, and soy which it replaces.

    And Brazil’s president isn’t doing anything about it. He’s actually telling farmers to clear most the forest. And the Brazilian farmers usually do this by burning trees down btw. Anyways Brazil’s president was offered 20 million dollars to protect the forest. He denied it because according to some sources he wants to make more profit. So he instead took the bigger offer that has nothing to do about the Amazon. I’m kinda happy that people are now realizing that we need trees. Fun fact, the Amazon works as a cooling station for earth because of how big it is. (which is half of Canada)
