I heard one vfx reviewer say that the feather sequence was one of the greatest VFX sequences ever done in film. If you look at how long that is, all the reflections and interaction with the environment, and the fact it isn't a fake feather, but a composited feather, in 1994 technology, it's masterful

It's funny how these days, the studios use a _lack_ of VFX to promote new movies. Even though they're always lying through their teeth when they claim "everything was done 100% practically". As a young guy, you might not realize that when Forrest Gump was released in the early 90's that the vfx were a big deal and everyone knew about it. Yes, they were so good that they were "invisible", but the story of the pioneering vfx by Robert Zemeckis was not a secret. It was just as groundbreaking as Jurassic Park had been the year before it.

    • @whyjnot420
      @whyjnot420 Před rokem +30

Speaking as a person born in 1980 who saw both in theaters, I can say that while Jurassic Park's effects were cooler (there is no T-Rex in Forrest Gump), the effects in Forrest Gump have always been more impressive to me.
One of the reasons that I have always preferred full animated things, to that which are made of a mix of live action and animation, is that when everything on screen is fake, it looks more real than when half of it is real. That is how I say it anyways. In a little more depth I would say that upon starting something that is 100% animated, you are already committed to a certain level of suspension of disbelief for the purposes of entertainment. Making it so that you are less critical of any one element. Than you are when starting a movie or show that is a mix of live action with realistic CGI animation where you are supposed to believe that it is all just stuff shot on camera.
The things that really get away with a mix of live action and animation like Who Framed Roger Rabbit or even Monkeybone, are a different breed.
addendum: The kit they used to insert Hanks into old footage was used for even better purposes in the Trials and Tribble-ations episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. To insert DS9 people into classic episodes of the original series. :D
caveat: I have always been a giant fan of all forms of animation, so things like the CGI of Jurassic Park or the awesome merging with historical footage like with Forrest Gump, have always been of great interest to me. A part of my brain is always looking at that side of a movie, even as another part is simply loving the experience.

Pretty much. You can actually do something like this yourself with any camera you have kicking around, even your phone, and some video editing software. The trick is, you make sure the camera is "locked off" - cannot move, anywhere, not even a tiny bit - on a tripod or similar mount, and take some shots of the scene with no-one in it. This is your "plate". Now when you move into shot, you can make yourself appear and disappear by dissolving between the two clips - the background remains the same so it just looks like it's you that's fading in and out! Now, if you wrap green or blue cloth around your legs, you can use a chroma keyer to punch that out, or punch a "Death Becomes Her" hole right through your body with a green circle on your shirt...

I have to say, the most incredible thing about this is Forrest Gump's VFX not only are incredible even by our current standards in the 2020s, but the fact that the tech they used back then must no doubt have been less powerful. Which again is incredible because the skill of all those involved was the real deal!

Such a good film. Keep in mind that VFX companies in the 90s (eg. ILM) were always pioneering new technologies and techniques, and often combining old techniques with new (like puppetry with CGI in Terminator 2). The result was a first-time effect, tailor-made for the scene, which blended beautifully and looked incredible. Nowadays most VFX companies do not pioneer new techniques or technologies, because they have so many methods at their disposal already, and effects are often "pre-visualized". It's a cheaper, cookie-cutter approach. Which is why CGI today often looks far less convincing and is easy to spot. Add to that the fact that film budgets are much larger, and main actors in effects-driven films can command a large percentage of the film's budget as their salary, less money remains for experimenting or pioneering techniques

Back when PC CPUs weren't as powerful as it is today, they have to think of some VFX that is looked real and convincing. Best VFX is when people couldn't tell it well. Perhaps we took VFX for granted these recents years and heavily rely on it even for a simple scene.

NO CGi, I had the feather sequence for real. I was setting on a bench at night in a lit area. A feather floated down from overhead. The air was still. This feather floated down till it was even right in front of my face a few inches. There it continued to spin but was totally stationary, hovering as if on an invisible string for a seemingly long moment, neither going up or down or anywhere. Then it continued it's downward path but instead of landing on my lap, it drifted over just in time to land on the bench right beside me. I really can't explain it except this movie came to mind immediately. I still have that feather. I thought it might bring good luck but it is indifferent.

Repent and follow Jesus my friend! Repenting doesn't mean confessing your sins to others, but to stop doing them altogether. Belief in Messiah alone is not enough to get you into heaven - Matthew 7:21-23, John 3:3, John 3:36 (ESV is the best translation for John 3:36). Contemplate how the Roman empire fulfilled the role of the beast from the sea in Revelation 13. Revelation 17 confirms that it is in fact Rome. You don't really need to speculate though because you can start a relationship with God and have proof. Call on the name of Jesus and pray for Him to intervene in your life. - Revelation 3:20
Revelation 6 1st Seal: White horse = Roman Empire conquering nations under Trajan 98-117 AD & Gospel spreading rapidly. 2nd Seal: Red horse, bloody civil wars with 32 different Emperors, most killed by the sword. 185-284 AD 3rd Seal: Black horse, economic despair from high taxes to pay for wars, farmers stopped growing. 200-250 AD 4th Seal: Pale horse, 1/4th of Romans died from famine, pestilence; at one point 5,000 dying per day. 250-300 AD 5th Seal: Diocletian persecuted Smyrna church era saints for ten years, blood crying out for vengeance. 303-312 AD 6th Seal: Political upheaval in the declining Roman Empire while the leaders battled each other. 313-395 AD
Revelation 7 Sealing of 144,000, the saints, before trumpet war judgments, which led to the fall of the Roman Empire.

Revelation 9 Two woe judgments against the central 1/3rd and eastern 1/3rd of the Roman Empire. 612-1453 AD 5th Trumpet: Locust & scorpions point to Arabia, the rise of the Muslim army. Islam hides Gospel from Arabs. 612-762 AD 6th Trumpet: Turks released to attack Constantinople with large cannons (fire, smoke, brimstone). 1062-1453 AD
Revelation 10 The little book is the printed Bible, which was needed after the Dark Ages when Scriptures were banned by Popes.
Revelation 11 7th Trumpet: Martin Luther measured Roman Church; found that it’s an apostate church, not part of true temple. The two witnesses are the Scriptures and saints who proclaim the pure Gospel and testify against the antichrist Popes. Papal Church pronounced Christendom dead in 1514 AD. Silence for 3.5 years. You didn't need reflections for the CG Feather, because I don't think anyone would have noticed no matter how hard they looked (on brick).
But that level of detail is the reason this movie will continue to be remembered as one of the best out of Hollywood.
