There are films that just by their very nature, require visual effects, it would be impossible to make them otherwise! Sci-fi movies, monster movies, and of course, every single Marvel movie ever made!
But whereas Marvel films are criticized for overusing VFX, movies like The Pirates Of The Caribbean aren't, even though they too, used VFX in almost every shot.
In this video, we explore some of the detail that went into the VFX of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.

I still think the pirates movies did one of the best jobs at CGI and VFX I’ve ever seen. Every time I watch them I’m always blown away. They were way ahead of their time!
not ahead of time, because these are the standard cgi before like transformer, etc.... people are just getting lazy these days cause they already know they earn money already without doing much effort,....
dead - what ahead - this is 22nd century dude
Lord of the rings
Will still be amazing in 50 years.
@@quazar912 ......Hahaha the 22nd century haha. We have a long way to go until then.
@@Canadianvoice most movies made after 1979 will hold up pretty good… Star Wars changed what is possible in VFX because of George Lucas’ ILM company basically created CGI.
The original pirates trilogy had the perfect balance of practical effects and CGI.

Yup. The movies are spectaculars!
It's true actually coz when a movie uses practical + CGI .. it becomes a wow ....

A great applause not only to the special effects creators, but also to the actors: They have to imagine it all in their head in order to act right
This! A lot of people don’t realize how these actors working with a lot of cgi have to put into it in their minds to make it all come to life!
czcams.com/video/FivDonPDIj0/video.html
I said the same thing. They have to look in awe at nothing.
Which takes more Than Superb Acting ability
It helps if you have a good director that can really set the scene for you and who may offer some visual aids as well
Imagine that the first three movies of Pirates were made in the 2000s and their effects stand superior even compared to movies made in 2010s and 2020s
They looked better than the last two even.
@@ano_nym I agree
Has a lot to do with the heavier use of reference and detail. The newer stuff seems a bit more corporate like and less mimicking reality and fiction intertwined.

@@nevertrustbob1291 that’s a great way of putting it; I definitely agree. I love marvel but they just make it so fantastical
I've recently been rewatching Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy and how well the special effects hold up is astounding. It goes to show what actually giving VFX artists time and money can do, unlike so many Disney (especially Marvel) movies these days don't do, thus resulting in the inferior to very bad VFX.
It's amazing what time and passion can create!
POTC is a disney film.
@@AlbertAlbertB. I know, I said Disney "these days"
The fact that Depp makes us believe all this is actually real, is full testament to his talent and dedication.
Wot? His character was extremely clowny in the midst of alot of serious charaters. His preformance was fantastic, funny and over all extremely entertaining. But it wasn't what made this feel like it could actually be real, that was the cgi which this guy literally just explained.
I only had the stomach to watch the 1st movie as this sort of fantasy movie genre really isn't my kind of stuff, and I think he clearly succeeded in making it entertaining, not in making anyone "believe all this is actually real"!
@@MelkisgoedvoorJan I guess what he is trying to say is, since Depp is playing as the main character, often times he had to interact with nothing or guys wearing "CGI suits". I mean, if we think about it, it can be quite challenging to imagine interacting with something fictional while there's a bunch of men and women directly looking at you or doing something else unrelated to what you're trying to picture in your mind while performing.
Dont talk about him, guy is cancelled.

I actually never noticed the amount of CGI used in these films, and I've developed a new appreciation for how good of a job the Pirates franchise has done.

Either way, dead men tell no tales
Thing about the Pirates movies, the first 3 at least. Had extreme amounts of practical effects, even going to the Caribbean, building whole ships and damaging them when no one was on them to give reference when cgi. Marvel will now just build houses and backgrounds out of CG when these places exist and are filmable or sets are buildable
Who knew that a movie based off a theme park ride would lead to such a mighty successful franchise? Kudos to Disney for managing to pull it off. It's a shame Disney won't open a park in my nation no matter how much I beg for it

@@jamesblond1747 that's the most expensive movie ever made. In my opinion it feels like it had a much lower budget than the third one. I don't think they used the money well at all, it feels very lackluster after what came before it. Still better than the 5th though

Pirates of the Carribbean is the best series ever made, the Storyline, Actors, CGI and VFX team, the Villains, Direction and ofcourse Captain Jack Sparrow
czcams.com/video/FivDonPDIj0/video.html
It's good for sure. But for me, it'll always be the lord of the rings trilogy. Doesn't get any better than that in my opinion
It's also insane that the first few movies came out so long ago but the CGI and VFX effects still look up to date and I don't recall anyone ever being able to point out any discrepancy in them which is absolutely insane.
When you see Davy Jones for the first time you can easily think the movie was made in 2021 by how incredibly good he looks (and everyone else included)
I can't believe there was no one on the ship in the scene where it was being destroyed, the movement of the crew in the background was so realistic with the explosion effects that I couldn't imagining that they weren't really there.
Just WOW. The behind the scenes artists really deserve more time in the limelight.
I think one of the big reasons, Pirates of the Caribbean CGI and even Star Wars CGI looks so good, is they're not pumping out so many projects per year like marvel. Sometimes they take yearly breaks for Star Wars or they release fewer shows than Marvel, and Pirates movies come out every few years which is not as often as Marvel, who makes a new film that will release almost every 3 to 4 months a year.

I watched all the POTC multiple times with close attention, in order to pick out errors to no avail! The film really succeeded in using best of the creative talents then without mincing finances. My respects to the writers, directors, artists/FVX, costumers, actors, engineers, technologies they made the fable a breathing reality.
What is a pirate's favorite letter? You think it be 'R', but a pirate's first love will always be the 'C'! What’s a pirate’s favorite hymn to sing in church? Arrrr-ve Maria! What is a pirate's least favorite workout? Planks, though they don't like Peg Day either because they never see the results. And can't forget about their ARRRRms!
Damn that last line from Johnny hurts now don’t it. No one else will ever be my Captain Jack Sparrow
I don’t care how much VFX they used the only thing I know is that it is one of the best film Hollywood ever produced.

It's nice to see you highlighting the VFX in the bad movies, not just the good ones. The CGI was still top-notch throughout the series, and it's worth highlighting the artistry of the VFX crew, regardless of the films' overall quality.

this is very cool to see. i also knew prior that they built 1:1 scale models of every ship in the film. the amount of work that went into these amazing films is incredible. its a shame johnny depp won’t be acting as jack sparrow anymore.
I feel like the big difference is that in the pirates films the effect are more like an aid to the actual visuals
Like almost everything that is shown is based on and actual thing
Like the destruction of the black pearl by the kraken is an actual ship being destroyed by two big pipes. Then just lay the tentacles over thag
People don't realize how much work goes into editing and graphics for these movies. Whatever time the actors spent filming. I bet the graphic artist spent 10 times that and probably many of them. God I love this stuff
And it makes the acting that much more amazing since they can't even see how the scene is gonna look
This is what separates forgettable from memorable. Attention to detail and actually caring about what and how you do something
Even as a kid of 8 years old i realized this movie had something special, its very well made

This doesn't answer the important questions:
Why can't pirates use sign language? Because the hook makes everything sound like a question! How much does it cost for pirates to get their ears pierced? About a Buccaneer! Where do Pirates go to play games? The Arrrr-cade! Where do pirates buy their hook hands from? From a second hand shop!

Hands to actors. Not only are they acting with lines and all, they have to see what we're seeing while doing lines...and all they see as we saw here was blue screens and a lot of fakery on sets. Kudos.
I recently watched all the Pirates of the Caribbean for the first time. The effects were AMAZING! Wish I watched them sooner! No wonder everyone wants a sixth Pirates movie!
I was 10 when I watched the first pirates of the Caribbean with my family at the west Edmonton mall in Canada and it scared me so much I had to leave the theater room twice during the movie!
The zombie pirates nearly traumatized me, so it is seriously one of the best movies ever made.
It's so good I haven't really had to think about how good it is...
Probably the best execution of VFX yet to be seen!
Amazing video...I love the idea of pulling off layers of GCI to show the individual components.
CGI on Davy Jones is still one of the best uses I’ve ever seen
This is why pirates of the Caribbean will always be my favorite movie!
Great team effort. Truly some master pieces.
I think the reason people complain about Marvel is because they lack that certain charm the VFX in Pirates of the Caribbeans had.
They didn’t simply create all of their effects virtually and work with that, they took the practical effects they knew and tied those in as well to make things feel more authentic even if that was simply using a real object for texture scans instead of using a resource gallery. I think a lot of movies now rely too much on the ease of technology, and while yes a lot of the shortcuts it provides were already being done, the more developments are made the more practical tools and effects get thrown by the wayside when they could offer so much.
Same thing is happening in the gaming industry, there’s an intense focus on creating the most realistic looking game possible when really that goal bears no creativity. We live in a time where we’re being forced to learn what the right balance is between tech and humanity, and it’ll take us a while to reach that point both personally within society and within the entertainment industries.
Thanx psycho Amber Turd for killing the franchise. Last one was not such a banger as the previous ones thou.

Wow, the editing in movies is insanely hardcore.
Salazar's FX were a delight to watch. I couldn't get my eyes off from the floaty hair and coat.
The most stunning special effects I've ever seen. I love these movies.
Pirates of the Caribbean isn't critisized because they did a good job (except for movie 5) and did a lot of live footage. A lot of Pirates of the Caribbean is practical, filmed on water, and a lot of their cgi scenes involve practicality. They have scenes with cgi but they are filmed on real boats and took way mlre effort than cgi'ing a boat. For instance the maelstrom scene was filmed on two boats inside infron of a green screen, the boats were on a 45⁰ angle and all the fighting was real etc, they even had water pouring down all day, the actors were soaked and frozen during the entire filming process, Marvel would have cgi'd most of that, including the boats.
The difference between PotC and Marvel is that the PotC crew dedocate themselves completely to their craft. Its not just a job, its their passion project.
PotC launches a film every few years, Marvel launches multiple films throughout the year.

no, the actors are still great and still get the credit, because of them, it made it felt real because imagine how much imagination the actors have to do to act approriately to the scene. because all they see are Blue or Green screen all over.
They are both vital. Actors are actors for a reason, and so are vfx artists, you can’t say that one is better than the other

@@Butterball3588 this is such a common misconception. The skill and ingenuity necessary for modern cgi is just as impressive. And way more complicated. There is a lot of clever maths involved and it is just as much about problem solving as with practical effects. Thses types of statements are just ignorant.
@@gavinderulo12 while I agree with your point, I also say that there has been a lot of extremely lazy cgi. The same could be said for costume design, but the cgi lack of effort really loses a major feel of a film.
@@Butterball3588 it has nothing todo with laziness. Bad cgi happens when the artists don't have enough time and budget. Also there are thousands of cgi shots in modern movies that you never notice because they are flawless. It's just the bad affects that stand out and make you question CGI.

the difference between Marvel's CGI and Pirates' CGI is in Pirates movies there is 75% acting with 25% CGI.
while in Marvel movies there is 95% CGI and 5% acting.
Although these films use loads if cgi, its pretty impressive to me that they simulated the kraken destroying a boat practically before adding cgi on top of the shot
Thats the thing, for alot of the original trilogy they shot things practically, and then used CGI to create the Kraken, or enhance scenes
Fascinating and jaw dropping
Can't believe how much effort goes into making a single scene
I didn't like Salazar's hair, I just found it distracting. It seemed like they were trying to replicate what they had with Jones' tentacles and that was the best they could come up with. I wish they hadn't done another plot about a cursed crew at all for that movie. They already had two different stories about cursed ship crews, there's gotta be something else you can do.
czcams.com/video/FivDonPDIj0/video.html
Funnily enough personally I found Salazar's hair one of the very few things good with the movie. I intensely hate that film, I went to see it in the cinema with high hopes, and I've genuinely never been so disappointed with a movie all my life -but, I found the underwater floaty hair effect neat lol.
I love the pirates of the Caribbean, Now that Johnny's innocence has been proven i hope there will be a movie that tells a proper ending to the story of the greatest pirate you have ever seen.
Isn’t it crazy tech has become so advanced that it’s easier to build contraptions to make a boat look like it’s moving in water instead of actually filming a boat moving in water?
It sounds like the production time for the film was more than enough for all the different plates to be shot while also working with the fx team to make sure the shots benefit the cgi. This is a big difference from the way Disney/Marvel is operating now.
Amazing...very good bro🙂👍
Really it is just incredible the amount of talented people who work behind and make it all possible. I truly hope that they are extremely well paid…
Wonderful and incredible people…. And back then with hand made flying space ships, monsters made by hand moving frame by frame…. It’s just amazing. And all the great artist painters who by hand painted backgrounds…. The studio pays high money for the actors…. Yes. But do they well compensate the geniuses behind that Red Carpet. Lol, about that ship fight at the end of the third POTC film had a flaw. The three ships could never engage in that exact shootout as they all had cross-sails, which required them to have a tail wind, so either one of them or two of them would be sailing bow-first into the wind. While it was a spectacular end of Cutler Becket, it could not have happened as all three ships had sails showing full wind in them but two were heading in the opposite direction than the third.
Amazing how much work just to make 2 minute sence. Respect for the genius peoples because I know how hard is in Unreal engine or in blender.
