  • Blackthrone And Fuji Boat Scene Has Much Deeper Meaning Than You Think SHOGUN Finale. One of the most memorable moments of the entire program was the emotional boat scene that took place in the tenth episode of Shōgun. It was a highlight of the finale and one of the best moments of the entire show.

    The scene where Fuji tells Omi to leave while pointing a pistol to him is definitely one for the ages!

    Fuji-sama was a marvelous character. Well acted and very thoughtful. The "please be on your way" line was stellar, perfectly delivered.

    Every time Fujiko appears.... I keep saying... " Wow, Cutie ".... Surely this young lady is the real ' discovery ' of this production... Forget all the other cast, this woman has an amazing acting style, so emotional, and very believable... I hope Moeka Hoshi wins awards for her role in this production, and gets new work on other films, etc...

    • @jsprite123
      @jsprite123 Před měsícem +3

      Agreed, more than the actresses playing Kiku or Lady Ochiba, Moeka Hoshi as Fuji deserves that Best Supporting Actress Emmy nomination (Anna Sawai most likely will be nominated for Best Actress).

      @@jsprite123 Yes, TBH, I think that Anna Sawai was not as good as Moeka Hoshi... I have noticed, on other YT channels, that people who are regular viewers of Japanese TV, are stating that, in Japan, Moeka Hoshi is considered to be a very good actress... And that, in Japan, the people do not consider Anna Sawai to be a top actress... I still wonder if the Casting Director should have switched the two roles round ?

      @radiokorps Před měsícem +1

      @@richardruff8712- Moeka Hoshi is a great actress, and deserves an Emmy for her work in Shogun. She’s quietly, well, maybe not so quietly been the real MVP of the series. I don’t know if she could have pulled off the role of Mariko, the way that Yoko Shimada was able to do back in the original NBC miniseries. Shimada was a last minute casting decision after the original actress backed out of the project. Shimada did an outstanding job, and I still prefer her performance over Sawai’s. She was more believable as a Japanese translator in 17th century Japan. Moeka Hoshi really brought character of Fuji to life in a way that had not been done previously.

    • @richardruff8712
      @richardruff8712 Před měsícem +1

      @@radiokorps Yes, completely agree... The only limiting factor seems to be that Moeka Hoshi can only speak very limited English... ( which has been commented elsewhere ).. My answer to that is... These are all professional actors... They all have to learn their lines... It wouldn't have been too difficult for Moeka to learn some sentences, and a few key words... She would have charmed us all, if she had been Mariko... I read somewhere that Yoko Shimada had only limited English as well... And we all loved her as Mariko, back in 1980...

    This scene in the Shogun finale is where I broke down and felt John's pain because he didn't want Fuji to leave. He lost all the people that he grew to care and love for. #ShogunFX #Shogun

    In the books Fuji was given permission to seppuku as long as she made it look like an accident to spare the Anjin’s feelings. He is given Kiku as a consort/wife - she also believes she is pregnant with his child after their night together.

    In my head canon, Blackthorne and Fuji-sama become married and start a family. Maybe their relationship wasn't as passion driven as Blackthorne+Mariko but it would have been a stable one and one based on mutual respect and knowledge of each party's painful past.

  • @royalsinside5031
    @royalsinside5031 Před měsícem +4

    Someone with lesser status than an actual wife but filling a similar role. But taking a consort or concubine (or being "assigned" one, in Blackthorne's case) doesn't usually come with all the political and diplomatic benefits that a full marriage alliance would provide. Though this depends on the society and point in human history.
    But in the show it seems each lord only has one wife, but may have several additional concubines. Toronaga is married to Lady Kiri (and you can tell they've been together for a long time, she's the only one who mocks him, and he gives it right back with a hint of a smile), but he has several other consorts, including one who just gave birth to his new child we see in episode 10.
    Historically the practice served the purpose of allowing a noble or ruler to have a woman in his life and have children but not necessarily use up his "marriage slot" on a lower status woman, when choosing the right marriage alliance had huge political consequences, in Sengoku era Japan as in Medeival Europe (where concubinage was practiced in the Early Middle Ages/Late Antiquity) and in many other societies.

    n the book Fuji suggested Midori, Omi's wife. She didn't feel Kiku was trained to be a wife.
    I always wondered how Omi felt about that, losing both his wife and mistress to the Angin-san.

    I guess I didn't really understand what an actual consort is, but I originally thought that a consort was more of a female servant, but I guess a consort is a female servant with benefits that could eventually lead to being a wife or stay a consort to the man even if he wife up another woman instead?

  • @justwatcher5657
    @justwatcher5657 Před měsícem +1

    What I get from the book is- wife takes care of the house (in the financial sense), consort is for sexy time. But Fujiko is a consort who takes care of the house, so who knows. Maybe just a legal distinction?

    • @nzcyclone
      @nzcyclone Před měsícem +2

      Fuji was Blackthornes Consort. Consort = wife legally. So yes part of the duties of being a wife was financial and looking after the house. Any other passion if you will was a concubine, which is a lesser status than a Consort. A person could only have 1 consort, but could have many concubines depending on their status. . Especially in this case. In that time period to be made a Hatamoto. Means you must come from a samurai family. Blackthorne did not. Therefore to add prestige if you will to his title and make it much more binding instead of a joke. He was given Fuji as his consort. Fuji did come from a well known samurai family. That then gave Blackthorne his legitimacy to his title. I was always rooting for Blackthorne and Fuji as to me she was a great charactor both in this miniseries and also in the original. But in the 2024 version we got much more backstory relating to her. But, one must remember it does not matter how much she cared, respected or loved Blackthorne her true love was her husband and her child. So sadly as much as wished a happy ending for them both, it was never going to happen. Even her uncle knew this and if you recall i think it was in EP 8 or might have been ep 9 he said to her what about living?

  • @24X7CARZ
    @24X7CARZ Před měsícem +2

    Here’s the thing: it’s possible that Fuji’s fate (offscreen) is the same as in the book, and becoming a “nun” could be a deception to keep Blackthorne and others unaware of what will actually become of her: a suicide disguised as an accidental death.

    Man, the amount of pointless Seppuku in this series is nuts. While I don't know, I find it hard to believe that this is even remotely historically accurate. In ten years all of Japan would become uninhabited.

      You are bringing your ideals, morals and modern way of thinking while watching a series.
      You have to accept the cultural differences to understand the ancient standards of society.
      What may be the right thing to do today, doesn't mean it was acceptable then.
