Check out an accessory for Apple Watch called Wristcam. It’s a dedicated wristband with a built in camera for FaceTime calls and still pictures. It’s kind of pricey but picks up the slack left by Apple on its popular wearable. It comes in two sizes depending on the Apple Watch size and model you have. That’s Wristcam for Apple Watch.

Very good points, thank you. Using cellular Apple Watch with cellular iPad mini 6 (although there is no Apple Watch app for iPad). Works out fine because my iPad is cellular as well as the Watch. Just have 2 different numbers but sure beats a $85 T-Mobile plan. Pay $20 for unlimited 5G on the iPad mini and $5 for the Watch and a phone number. iMessages go to both as well as FTA but damn sure I’ll use a $5 phone plan with my Airpod pros

Yeah good point, fortunately it's card terminal which needs to have internet connection not the watch, phone or physical card ;)
Adding camera or video conferencing means using video encoder/decoder and unfortunately it will eat up the watch battery in no time. Other issue is squeezing all hardware together while most customers would prefer slimmer and nicer watches than bulky ones. So yeah it will need further developments in power saving/efficiency and miniaturising things, we need to wait a decade or two :)

If you make a call from the watch, you’re stuck on the phone screen. If you make it from the phone, and switch to the watch, you can do other stuff on the watch.

Your phone can be completely turned off, even with a dead battery, the apple watch will function. This happened recently to me and my watch was my only device until I got my phone charged up again! Thanks for the question!

I haven't really noticed too much of an effect on the battery for my normal day to day. But when I was testing my watch, driving around in this video, using navigation and music with my car, it did drain the battery a bit. I also think if you were in an area without your phone that has a weak cell signal for a long period if time, you will likely see the battery drain faster than usual.

Yes, the WiFi only watch can use WiFi to do these things, however the experience won't be as good. With the cellular watch, you'll be able to make calls and use your watch in more places. It really boils down to how often you are without your phone and how connected you want to be. 😊

The number sync seems to be a carrier feature. You might have limited success with things just working out of the box, like blue messages probably will work, but green messages to Android phones and phone calls might not forward over to the watch. Apple's support site does say "An Apple Watch that you set up for a family member can use a different carrier than your iPhone uses." Usually that means the watch has a dedicated number. I think that means they don't support it when paired with an iPhone.

I upgraded my watch from the 4 to 7 and it won’t connect to my old line it’s freaking ridiculous 8 hrs talked to 8 different sprint representatives today and none of them fixed my issues! Have to try again tomorrow this is getting ridiculous
You go to your account and look up where it says sync a device aka your phone number to your watch
If the advice above doesn’t work, tell them you’re returning it. You might find they’re more helpful all of a sudden.

I remember two years ago when I bought an apple watch se that I do not need to get an extra line, all I gotta do was just connect to my phone and use my phone cellular and it was all for free. But this time I have to pay $ 10 per month for my new watch to have cellular service. I am with T Mobile, may they changed the policy recently or want to make money from the customers.
Hello. So you don’t necessarily have to have a cellular plan unless the provider requires it. Generally if you get your phone through T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon, etc. and you go with an installment plan then sometimes they will force the cellular plan on you until the watch is paid off. Sometimes this can be to your benefit. For example, I recently got an Apple Watch for each of my two kids and there was a deal and basically one of their Apple watches ended up being free as long as we had cellular on them which I had planned to do anyhow, if you were to say buy you’re Apple Watch directly through Apple then I don’t think you’re obligated to use cellular even if it’s available on the device. I hope this helps.

18 months ago I bought an iPhone and a series 5 cellular watch primarily for fall detection and other safety features. I found that the Watch would not send or receive text messages or phone calls even 70 feet away from my iPhone. Even 25 feet away within my house. I tried two watches with 2 phones with AT&T and Verizon. I don’t know if I want to bother going through trying to set up a series 7 since it seems like it’s no different from the 5 in its capabilities. If I can’t make a call or send a text how could I even manually send an SOS message if I fell?
I'm very sorry to hear about this. I've been trying to think of what might cause this. Perhaps the watch got inadvertently put in airplane mode? It would show a plane icon at the top of the screen. The other way the watch talks to iPhone is via Bluetooth or WiFi. Apple watches prior to the Series 6 did not support 5 GHz wifi so that could be an issue. In such case, you must connect the iPhone to a 2.4 GHz WiFi access point, or manually enter the 2.4 GHz WiFi SSID into the Series 5. But if the watch had cellular, then it should just use cellular when you are out of range with the iPhone. Cellular is a bit tricky to test. The watch will default to bluetooth and wifi if the phone is nearby. I've even seen it refuse to use cellular until I completely powered off my phone. Somehow it still senses the phone is nearby, even when the phone is in airplane mode.
@@EricCosner it’s a series 5. That’s outdated in technology years. Remember you’re supposed to be able to leave your iPhone at home and just wear your Apple Watch. Maybe ask for help at the Genius Bar at Apple Store.

@@jewelnabq01 are you still deciding? I sold a $4,000 watch and got the Apple Watch and I love it more than I expected. A big concern was charging the battery before end of day but it last until I go to bed, just like my iPhone. Such useful features once you start using it too
@@IvanBustos I made the leap and ended up with the cellular. I wasn't sure if it was worth the extra $$. I did follow the advice from some of the posts and the videos. I am glad I did. It give me a choice and turns out for my purposes I do need the cellular. I am still learning what it can do.....definitely a learning curve. I hear ya about the battery life.

Without a plan it basically works just like the gps only version of the Apple Watch. The only time you really may be forced into a plan is if you bought the watch from a cellular provider under a payment plan.
So if I have verizon with just our two phones (my wife's and mine) And she has a apple watch with cellular capabilities. Do I need to add another "line" onto my plan for her to leave her phone at home and make calls using the watch?
Yes, that's correct. If she wants the full, unrestricted benefits of her watch. The plans for wearables are usually around $10 monthly and I believe Verizon has something called "Number Share" which will allow the watch to share her iPhone's primary number, although she will technically have another physical number available to the Watch, you won't see the extra number if Number Share is enabled. You should be able to turn Number Share on and off inside of her iPhone's Watch App. Without cellular on the watch, she still may be able to make calls and text whenever WiFi connectivity is available, such as hotspots, public wifi, etc., however cellular is the most convenient and fewer problems will arise. I have kept cellular on mine and sometimes it's nice just leaving the phone behind, especially when we go hiking. Hopefully this helps! If you have any other questions, let me know. Take care.

@@jewelnabq01 no ive still not need it as i dont do running or go places without my phone. if u do and want to then yes the apple watch can do just that. but remember the watch is not capable of doing everything like web browsing or youtube or so. i think the contract is like £10 a month on top of ur tariff. another way u could look at it is if ur gonna get robbed and not have ur phone on u, they will just take the watch and u can go home and FIND MY WATCH with ur phone or computer. where as with the phone it depends if its on or off and most time is off. where as the watch would be probably kept on more as such.

Can you check email while on cellular data and away from phone?
It does work but it is a bit limited. For example, I go for runs all the time on cellular, but when I just now checked on cellular it said one of my accounts needed attention. So I had to open Watch app on my phone and put in a password that had changed. Then I hopped back on cellular and sent a few test emails and never got notified, but I was able to go in to Mail app on the watch, and it did pull them in. I just tested with the default mail app, but others are available, such as Gmail that might work better.

@@thefunkids6785 I have AT&T. When I tested this morning I didn’t have great signal. Since I posted this video we discovered you can test cellular by turning off Bluetooth inside iPhone Settings and then turning off WiFi on Watch. In the video, I turned off Bluetooth in control center which actually keeps the Watch connected.

Yea, you should be able to if they are paired, regardless of cellular or not. If no cellular, you just need to be on WiFi and it should forward the text message (from say an Android) over. I have found the mileage varies at times with notifications. It's just that sometimes I'll miss a notification because I get so many of them.

@hollywood2108 you should be able to take your watch with you to the new provider, as long as it's compatible with their network and unlocked. If you are using a service such as NumberSync, then it would be best to transfer the watch to the new phone service. Other things to consider might be whether or not your Apple Watch number needs ported. I am not even sure what my number is since I have AT&T NumberSync, so I would only port my iPhone number and just use some form of NumberSync on the new service. Be sure to backup your devices. Typically, the Apple watch backs up to the phone and can be restored from the Watch App. Hopefully this helps! Best of luck switching everything over! Take care!

You don’t necessarily have to have it. If you buy the watch from a cellphone company, they might require it, however if you buy a cellular capable version from Apple, then you do not have to enable it. You can just take your phone with you, or use WiFi when it’s available to communicate from your watch.

So I was thinking about getting an Apple Watch SE thru my T-Mobile Plan. They would give me the $300 watch for free. But you pay $15 for the cellular on the watch. I wouldn’t ever leave the house without my phone bc to me that’s just stupid. I honestly just want the watch bc I’ve always worn a regular watch every day, but I have broken 3 watch crystals now because I have a disability that leaves me crashing into stuff, I love wearing my nice Invictas and stuff on dates but switching back and forth from my Gshock when I go to work is annoying. I figured with an Apple Watch I look just as snazzy. Seems kinda stupid paying 15$ a month just for a stupid watch lol

I am very forgetful so I use cellular on my Apple Watch so I don’t have to worry about bringing my phone and even worse forget my phone somewhere, so I’d say for peace of mind cellular is a good choice.

If your watch is paired with an iPhone, then Apple Watch can use your iPhone to make calls. It is more limited than having cellular on the Watch because you'll need to either be on WiFi or within a 100 feet or so of your iPhone.

You're correct, a decent camera would take up extra room. I could have been clearer. When mentioning "for whatever reason" this was more about the design challenges that Apple faces. For any smart watch, it's definitely important to maintain a sleek, comfortable design. Incorporating a decent camera into a device this small would certainly be challenging. It could require making the watch bigger, or potentially compromising on other aspects of the watch like its battery life, performance, or even aesthetic. There is a third party product that integrates a camera into an Apple Watch band called Wristcam, but it's quite bulky.
I do believe that they will eventually find a way to include a camera, without compromising the overall user experience. Imagine the possibilities: video calls, quick snaps, augmented reality applications. The question, of course, is when and how.
