  • In this video, Doctor Andrea Furlan explains five myths that people believe about pain in seniors.
MYTH number 1. Experiencing pain is a natural part of growing old.
MYTH number 2. Older adults suffer less than younger persons when they have pain problems.
MYTH number 3. “I don’t have the right to ask questions about my pain.”
MYTH number 4. Older adults can’t tolerate strong painkillers.
MYTH number 5. Analgesic pills are the only means of treating pain.

Good to hear a doctor talk about the advantages of using pain medication. At 70 And after 45 years of physical labor I have developed chronic stiffness and full time back pain. I had to retire due to constantly ending up in ER due to episodes of extreme back pain so bad I could barely walk in to the ER. I would be given enough pain medication to get me home..go to physical therapy…wash repeat. My bad days put me in a bad even angry mood. But do you think I, a 70 year old man with no criminal record…not even a traffic violation …can be trusted to have a supply of pain medication? I am automatically treated like a criminal for even asking for pain medication refills. This is a horrible treatment of people who have contributed to society in many, many positive ways their entire life. To say that I am bitter is a massive understatement.

Just like any Machine ,it wears out, well we are all machines and we do wear out. Don't exercise to hard because you'll just wear yourself out even more. Deteriorated discs are very painful and sciatica and nerve pain is also. I would love to exercise more but it horrible the next night or day and it's not worth it. Older people are not young anymore like when they were in their twenties or thirties and we must acknowledge that fact. Don't give in to old age but know your limits. Alot of problems are job related and some people have more pain issues than others, live accordingly.

People with chronic kidney disease need to be careful about various medications including pain meds. I was surprised how many medications are bad for the kidneys.

I am reluctant to talk about my chronic pain with my doctors because of being subtlety labelled (and treated like) a drug seeker. So I avoid stirring the pot because I at least want to remain status quo with being prescribed what is currently working pretty well. Could it be better? Yes. Could it be worse? Yes. So I keep quiet. Rarely does a doctor bring up the topic for discussion. The med tech asks for a pain number at intake. That doesn't consider the big picture, it's just a snapshot of that time and day. I'm in the U.S. Just discovered your videos. Maybe they will help me re-assess.

The problem with pain in older adults is the fact that if you mention the word pain to ANY doctor they immediately respond "WE DON"T DO PAIN MANAGEMENT", meaning that they are scared of losing their license if the PRESCRIBE ANY OPIOIDS at all. So older adults HAVE TO ENDURE the pain because doctors WILL NOT PRESCRIBE opioids at all. ....I go see a doc. The first thing out their mouth is "What's your problem?" Chronic pain. "Where do you hurt?" All over. "Why are you hurting?" I don't know, that's why I am here, so that you, the doctor, can tell me why I hurt all over. "Oh, so you aren't here for pills?" If that's what it will take to treat me, then yes, I want pain pills. And the doc turns white, scared that the feds will take their license because they prescribe pain pills. SO I STAY HOME WITH HORRIBLE PAIN, THANKS TO THE FEDERAL GOV!

I am 79 and very fortunately suffer little pain apart from some in my right arm which I diagnose as operating a computer mouse at the wrong angle and some in my left knee when I kneel. I can confirm that stretching exercises really help both of these limbs - the only problem is having the strength of character to exercise every day. :)

Dr. Furlan, i fell upon your videos by coincidence and have since subscribed and listen to many of them. Though i feel blessed at 69 being physically, mentally and emotionally healthy, i am surrounded by many who are not. I listen to all your videos, even if the issue does not concern me. In all of them you are straightforward, focused and to the point. I also love the way you relay the medical message to the lay person. Everything is so informative. I can’t thank you enough. God bless you. 🙏🏽

Hi it's really sad when doctors don't spend time explaining. They just dish out medication.
