  • A while ago I towed a 1600 kg/3500 lb caravan. Unfortunately I wasn't able to cruise at 80 km/h due to Friday traffic. The average speed was around 60-65 km/h and the consumption was 400-500 Wh/km.

    If the trailer has an inertial braking mechanism, obviously that energy cannot be regenerated. But if it's adjusted to be minimal or come on a little late, you can regenerate some through very gradual braking or stopping.

    They should put batteries in the bottom of caravans/trailers as an range extender for the car. so somehow the caravan could give its energy to the car during traveling. so it compensates the higher consumption because of the weight.

    • @iamxerc
      @iamxerc Před 7 lety +5

      That just means more weight in the caravan..?

    • @thomascrabtree
      @thomascrabtree Před 5 lety

      @Arjun Krishnan You wouldn't need to charge whilst driving, the battery range extender built into the caravan can just operate in parallel to the car's existing internal battery. It would make sense to deplete the battery in the caravan first and then just switch over to the cars internal battery for the remainder of the journey. It would require Tesla to make some software modifications to accept an external power source and have some common API standard to share external battery depletion information on the cars dashboard, but no hardware modifications at all.

    Pausing after 40 sec since I as a experienced caravaner spotted a potential problem. Do not know if I want to continue watching this...
    Raise the front support wheel way more! It can rub the ground when suspension is compressed in bumps etc.
    Edit: Lol, at least they figured it out...

    you are building a great database with your 22" wheels to compare to 20" if you decide to get them. This would be very interesting to see. to pull such a large trailer uphill on 22"s has to be a power killer. Thx for showing this run.

    I don't really get the math of the car's computer. When filming the speedometer you are mostly doing around 90ish kph and also using around 90kw of power....but that's 1kwh per kilometer, not 500Wh. Can you calrify how that discperancy occurs and will the car's battery really be empty after 1 hour of driving at constant speed of 90kph?
    Thanks for your answer (or maybe anyone else can explain to me..then also thanks ;D)

    Nice one Bjørn, your driving skills are great for these
    type of video tests of the amazing tesla cars!
    I noticed on the small driver controls screen under the
    steering wheel there was a lit icon of a caravan,
    So does the cars system know that you have the caravan attached
    and set it's driving to cope with the extra weight and traction needed?
    And what is special about the towing attachment?
    Thanks for the great video! :)

      The Tesla Model X has cooling for the motor, so you can drive it 200 km/h sustained, or in this case tow a trailer up a 500 m mountain pass without needing a "gauge", the car just handles it for you, no need to check on it.

    • @joerose9459
      @joerose9459 Před 7 lety +3

      Battery & Drivetrain Temps would be useful, for sport mode ("ludicrous"). But for the standard model it would just generate more panic and disinformation among social media. Everyone attempts to second guess Tesla's top engineers. That's why they hide all the diagnostic data behind a manufacturer password. Just give the idiot lights, "regent will be reduced", or "performance will be reduced" when under/over temp.
