- A while ago I towed a 1600 kg/3500 lb caravan. Unfortunately I wasn't able to cruise at 80 km/h due to Friday traffic. The average speed was around 60-65 km/h and the consumption was 400-500 Wh/km.

If the trailer has an inertial braking mechanism, obviously that energy cannot be regenerated. But if it's adjusted to be minimal or come on a little late, you can regenerate some through very gradual braking or stopping.
Hahaha those improvised towing mirrors are hilarious 😂
...and mandatory
shut up this is vehicle
The owner of the trailer is good on cam.
My wife and I have a caravan with our tesla Y and we love it! just congratulations on your videos!
bjorn the videos are not "suitable" because of the "shiiiiet"?
lol
shiiiiit... I think children already knew that word the day they took their first shit 😂😂😂
They should put batteries in the bottom of caravans/trailers as an range extender for the car. so somehow the caravan could give its energy to the car during traveling. so it compensates the higher consumption because of the weight.
That just means more weight in the caravan..?
@Arjun Krishnan You wouldn't need to charge whilst driving, the battery range extender built into the caravan can just operate in parallel to the car's existing internal battery. It would make sense to deplete the battery in the caravan first and then just switch over to the cars internal battery for the remainder of the journey. It would require Tesla to make some software modifications to accept an external power source and have some common API standard to share external battery depletion information on the cars dashboard, but no hardware modifications at all.
Shhiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeet!!!
Pausing after 40 sec since I as a experienced caravaner spotted a potential problem. Do not know if I want to continue watching this...
Raise the front support wheel way more! It can rub the ground when suspension is compressed in bumps etc.
Edit: Lol, at least they figured it out...
This is so great. My vintage camper is only 1,500 pounds, so I could totally tow it with the Model X.
This was great..another classic! This could change a lot of minds for people who think that the X is just a toy. I wonder if the rain kept the system a little cooler?
you are building a great database with your 22" wheels to compare to 20" if you decide to get them. This would be very interesting to see. to pull such a large trailer uphill on 22"s has to be a power killer. Thx for showing this run.
Yes thank you very much.
0-60Mph is the first thing I would have done! : )
Great video. Thanks.
Totally fun if you like a wrecked trailer
Great video. It would be interesting to see how the consumption is on the way back. Would you be able to recuperate more with the camper attached or not?
Matthias Randon more, of course
Thank you for sharing.
Cool video.
What are you working on currently? Any exciting challenges or road trips?
I don't really get the math of the car's computer. When filming the speedometer you are mostly doing around 90ish kph and also using around 90kw of power....but that's 1kwh per kilometer, not 500Wh. Can you calrify how that discperancy occurs and will the car's battery really be empty after 1 hour of driving at constant speed of 90kph?
Thanks for your answer (or maybe anyone else can explain to me..then also thanks ;D)
you should have used LUDICROUS LAUNCH mode at the traffic lights!
You should post a video about the new autopilot upgrade
See? No overheat like people say...except it was 12C ambient temp! LOL Bring that thing to Australia and tow the van up the Clyde mountain and see how it goes. It was only 44C ambient last time I went down the mountain! :)
Nice one Bjørn, your driving skills are great for these
type of video tests of the amazing tesla cars!
I noticed on the small driver controls screen under the
steering wheel there was a lit icon of a caravan,
So does the cars system know that you have the caravan attached
and set it's driving to cope with the extra weight and traction needed?
And what is special about the towing attachment?
Thanks for the great video! :)
excellent video Bjorn. i have a 2017 model X 100D and tow a 4100 lb boat (about 400 lbs tongue weight) on a dual axle trailer a short distance (10 km's) from my house to the Lake. In your experience, am i risking any damage when i tow with my 22 inch Tesla rims ? I know it says i should you 20 inch rims with this level of trailer weight & tongue weight. Thank you
Bjorn, I learnt from another vlog that you got issues with you front motor. Is that right? Detail what happened and was it due to recent towing or speedy driving (i.e. Germany)? Thx
I'm not getting one till they come up with the self washing version.
Are you using range mode? Is it recommended to use range mode for towing? Do you have a video with range mode while towing?
Thinking about pulling a little 'MyPod' trailer. Do you know the height of the top of the standard hitch ball? I realize air suspension will be set high in towing mode.
does the caravan have a braking system on it. How is it controlled? Is the controller an aftermarket controller or is it an available option with the car. I would like to see some videos on setting up and using the towing package
But what range did you get coming back down?
Bjorn, when will you get 20" wheels so that we can see you tow 5,000 pounds?
Bjorn, as I recall you said on an earlier video that you cannot use Autopilot when you are in trailering mode. But can you use TACC (cruise control)?
yes
What brand are those side mirror extensions?
is it possible to activate the autopilot with the caravan or trailer?
With regards to listening out for Fan sounds, are there no temperature readings within the Tesla menu? ie battery temp or motor temp? Maybe that would be something to add in an advanced menu on an update for Tesla?
I have pulled a similar travel trailer weighing about the same. Travelled 81miles in 105 degree temp. and the car did fine.
The Tesla Model X has cooling for the motor, so you can drive it 200 km/h sustained, or in this case tow a trailer up a 500 m mountain pass without needing a "gauge", the car just handles it for you, no need to check on it.
Battery & Drivetrain Temps would be useful, for sport mode ("ludicrous"). But for the standard model it would just generate more panic and disinformation among social media. Everyone attempts to second guess Tesla's top engineers. That's why they hide all the diagnostic data behind a manufacturer password. Just give the idiot lights, "regent will be reduced", or "performance will be reduced" when under/over temp.

How long in average distance did you drive Model X with towing your caravan ?
Красава!
imagine the regen generated in descending and breaking?
Only 1600 kg? That thing looks like 2200kg caravan OMG
when towing did you experience noise in the lower frame area
Noise from where?
I'm a new model x 90d owner
Is the caravan loaded to maximum weight?
Have you tow with Nissan E-NV200? I have just speak with a company in sweden that have seven E-NV200 24kw all with tow bar and work Great on short rout with a trailer and a frige on and other stuff like what. Soon i buy a tow bar to my Nissan e-nv200 Evalia 24kw. I Will only use it to trailer.
Good
Gunde Svan lookalike :)
[Besserwisser mode: ON] I saw that caravan front wheel not retracted from 0:05. Guess they were so excited about the towing and wanted to avoid the rain that they forgot about standard procedures. [Besserwisser mode: OFF] Sorry. Couldn't resist. :-/
It would be interesting towing an Airstream
1.6 tons? Do you require a special driver license for this?
In France you do when the trailer is 750 kg or more...
yes he has BE
Standard license allows you to drive with a trailer up to 750kg, or a heavier trailer if the combined weight is under 4150kg i think. But I am guessing he has a BE license (trailer)
I watch and i am kid
AWEEEE Shiiiiiiiteeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
You should adjust your seat
1600kls and one axle?
It's no problem. 1 axle goes up to 2000kg on Adria caravans and other brands based on the ALKO chassis.
Breakaway cable is fitted wrong
Tow a 20ft glider trailer
i wish u would show us the road and not screen.
You do know you can use autopilot when towing!
Really? O.o
Yep!
If the car is in trailer mode, autopilot will not work but cruise control will.
You just DONT put it in trailer mode....
It will ding unexpected load, plus the trailer sway prevention won't be on without tow mode.
you go downhill - then your trouble will begin. 3500lb is only 3500lb on a flat surface, once you move downhill, that 3500lb becomes 4000...then 5000...and your break weight isn't simply large enough to safely stop.
+LooxGood Ever heard of regen before? Apparently you don't know much about how EVs work.
No safety chains.
JWY There are no safety chains in Europe. Big Trailers must have Brakes inside the trailer hitch to get the Trailer stable behind the Car after an evasive action.
And they must have Wheel Brakes, they make a full brake if the Trailer get lose.
Tesla does it again!
why it isn't suitable for children to watch?
Not suitable for children? Oh motherfucking hell?
Why is it not suitable for kids?
Swearing
because of "shiiiiit"
shit
Because petroheads get butthurt when they realize that a tesla can do everything that a petrol car can… but better.
Why bjorn im fan of u but im a children
tesla's are cool but if im towing, im sticking with my gas truck. and damn you guys are choked down 80kmh and a special license for 1600kg? in Ontario a standard G license and tow 4500kg and a max gvw of 11000kg and tow as quick as you want
Which really isn't a good thing...
This is the first year for the Tesla Model X, as time goes by, the capabilities will increase. That's a good sized camping trailer being towed, and the Model X had PLENTY of power to spare, 600+ HP and 600 + ftlb torque.
SmartElectricCar Especially compared to the relatively low torque of a gas powered vehicle. For towing, diesel is probably best currently, but electric isn't too far off (minus the range losses)
Yeah, you aren't allowed to go faster with this kind of cargo. It's the rules that everyone has to follow. Not much we can do. Severe accidents are low though, witch is phenomenal! :D
ThisWorldOfEpicness why isnt that a good thing? learn how to drive lmao. if you cant tow 9900 pounds without crashing you shouldnt be aloud behind the wheel of anything
you look like the asian "joachim löw" xDD
what is not suitable for children
Shieeet
Why do you have a decimal comma
Because I live in Norway.
Interesting, Does the words 'point' and 'comma' get swapped? lol
Why not suitable for children?
The side mirrors are obscene.
Why children can,t watch
