  • I have just been listening to the the brand new Analogue Productions Atlantic 75 series issue of the Yes 1983 progressive rock epic '90125'. This absolutely superb new Kevin Gray all-analogue cut is presented on 2x45rpm LPs pressed at QRP - Quality Record Pressings.
    I also compare this to my UK original Bob Ludwig cut LP, and discuss the sonic differences of this phenomenal sounding example of Trevor Horn's production.

    Very thorough review! Thank you for your recommendation, we will definitely buy a copy. This album brings back a lot of memories as it was the first time I saw Yes on tour. God rest Chris Squire.🙏🏻🎧

      Wow, I’m a bit envious of you seeing them back in 1971. I first saw them on the Drama tour, so neither of the ‘proper’ line-ups…

    my Yes journey ended with Magnification, after that Jon Anderson left and wasnt the same for me, though i loved the Drama album. i saw the band at Wembley on the 90125 tour, fantastic! Very fond of the Ladder album too great sound quality.

      Thanks for the feedback Steve,
      I really do need to give more time to the later albums (all those after 90125, apart from Fly From Here and Fly From Here Return Trip which I do really like). I've bought them all as they've come out but very rarely did I '"get into" them...

    Great review and thank you for the video. I bought this new reissue to replace my old copy I bought when it came out in 1983 and boy am I happy with how it sounds! I was 13 years old when this album came out and it's the album that opened the doors of the progressive rock world for me. I started buying all of YES' albums and other bands of the genre after 90125 came out. Within the year it came out I must've listened to this album at least 500 times. I also had made a copy on a cassette tape that I would listen to in my Walkman. Even to this day, I can say this album is in my top 5 albums of all time. It brings back so many great memories of my teenage years and of simpler times.

    Although not a classic Yes album, 90125 was a great comeback with an 80's vibe, which was a great move to keep themselves active in that new decade. Flawless album for what it is. No fillers. Trevor Rabin, even not being Steve Howe, did a great job not only on guitars, but also on vocals. My favorite track in the album is Changes, a masterpiece. I have this album on CD and on original 1983 vinyl record.

      Hi Rafael, I completely agree. It utterly blew me away back in 1983, and was for a while my favourite Yes album. The original still sounds great today, but this new version sounds better than ever!

      Totally agree about Going For The One. I did speak to Chad about that and he said it was because there was no natural break in Awaken, so couldn't do a 45rpm version. I absolutely love GFTO (especially Awaken) but it is a bright recording, I'd love to see that it remixed / remastered...

    Thanks Dave. I received my copy a few days ago. I got the same impression when I listened to Changes the first time. That is really as close as you can get to a master tape. Unbelievable. Waiting for the The Yes Album to be released next week.

    Another thorough, detailed comparison between two stellar releases of this iconic album. Each of the releases unveils different aspect of greatness when it comes to this decade defining recording.
    It would have been a unique opportunity to hear some trivia from the recording sessions from Mr Stuart Bruce. Even more interesting would be to hear his take on the master recording, compared to the vinyl issues that you discussed here.
    Thanks for another great video and keep up the good work whenever you find spare time.

      Hi Neil, thanks for the great feedback.
      I’m not 100% certain on this, but I think the first 2000 were numbered and only sold direct from Acoustic Sounds. If you buy a later run, or from a reseller they’re not numbered.
      However I must stress. I’m not 100% certain of this.

    Trevor Rabin was a refreshing change which totally altered the sound Yes. 'Cinema' won a Grammy for best instrumental song. You'll never see that again considering the direction of a failing Grammy and failing music now. Trevor Rabins solo album 'Don't Look Away' would be an excellent re-issue on vinyl. Great reviews Dave. For sure try to get your engineering buddy in for a discussion!

      Hi Daniel, thanks for the feedback. It's not that I don't like Trevor Rabin, but I do really love that 'classic period Yes'.... I totally agree that out of all of my favourite 70s bands, Yes handled the 1980s most successfully (in my opinion, I'm really not an Abacab / We Can't Dance fan). For sure I loved 90125 when it came out and this new version rekindles and improves upon that very effectively indeed.

    Thanks for another thorough analysis. I have the AP75 Fragile and CTTE on order but always felt that, although Trevor Horn breathed his production and commercial magic over the b(r)and, this was a completely different type of music. Added to that my original pressing had, what I felt, was an almost CD ish harshness to the sound which tested my patience. I guess I'll just have to shell out £75 after all, if it is that good.

    • @DaveDenyer
      @DaveDenyer  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Hi Ian, this still sounds very eighties / Trevor Horn, but it is more open, breathes more, has more subtle tonality, natural timbre, and dynamic range than the original. It's still on the forward side if you know what I mean.
      I wish they'd do Going For The One (they won't, I have asked): one of my favourite Yes albums of all time but an overly bright recording IMO.

    Hello Dave,
    Wanted to tell you about an interesting video I noticed, involving reel to reel tape machines, on CZcams.
    It’s posted by Canadian Vintage Radio Society and titled “Restoration RCA Transcription Broadcast Turntable”.
    Just in case that you hadn’t seen this must have accessory.

      @DaveDenyer  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Hi Michael, just watched it. That tape playing turntable add-on is very cool.
      I do in fact have quite a few acoustic (wind-up) gramophones, and an Edison phonograph (cylinder player).
      I find the history and development of recording and reproduction fascinating.
      Thanks for the pointer.

    After I knew this one is coming out from A.P. I did listen to the album and really liked it, bought it immediately when it came out in germany last week, love the album, love the sound, fantastic.
    Then I did listen to the entire catalog and I have to say, YES is really not my thing and the 90125 is the only one of them I really like, maybe I would buy BigGenerator and Union too but not for a heavy A.P. price. I´m ok with a good org pressing.

    I’ll be listening to my copy this evening. Bob Ludwig mastered Rush’s “Moving Pictures” and when I heard Sean Magee’s cut of Moving Pictures, it was like experiencing that album for the first time after hearing it hundreds of times.
    No disrespect to Bob Ludwig, his Zeppelin II is epic. Ludwig did use compression in his mastering chain that could cause some nuances and details in the mixes to be lost.
    I can’t say the Ludwig cut of Moving Pictures sounds bad at all. But the Magee cut was just so… revealing.
    I am thinking I’m going to be in for a similar treat when I spin the new cut of 90125.
    Great review!

    • @DaveDenyer
      @DaveDenyer  Před 2 měsíci

      Hi David, I'm not sure there was anyone much better than Bob Ludwig, back in those days. Moving Pictures was another 'prog into the 80s' epic. Perhaps, given the benefit of hindsight, even more of an epic than 90125...

    If I was limited to one title from the Atlantic 75 series, it would have been this title! I absolutely love 90125 and I was a huge fan of Drama as well. When Drama was released I was 16 or 17 years old, an impressionable era so the titles Drama, 90125 and Big Generator were big favourites of mine. Of course I came to completely enjoy the older Yes titles, Fragile, The Yes Album but I was too young to be into that sound at 7/8 years old in 1971. I had some woeful copies of 90125 and I was so glad that AP put out this title. It is the definitive version, even though it was from a copy of the original master. Great job by Chad and team and I enjoyed your review.
