Tesla Model Y DIY Xpel PPF - Full Frontal (Hood, Bumper, Fenders)

- One of the best things we did with our last Tesla Model Y was to install a DIY precut kit from 3M. This time we have teamed up with Drive Protected Shop to install another DIY kit, this time from Xpel.
Installing a PPF kit on a Tesla Model Y, or any Tesla for that matter, is not a super easy process. That said, you stand to save a boat load of money if you are willing to give it a try!
For best results, ensure your slip and slick solution are properly mixed, and make sure to keep the film wet until you are ready to lay the material down permanently. Start with the hood, then do the fenders, then finish up with the bumper. The bumper is the hardest panel to do and having done the hood and fenders will get you in the grove before getting to the bumper.
All Tesla kits, Model S, Model X, Model 3 and Model Y will save 20% by using code BTG on the site.

Just finished calling and ordering.
What a great guy and super fast service.
He said this is the video to follow if you are installing PPF.
He really is a great guy. Really like supporting business like his
Thank you for posting this! You can tell that you’ve gained experience since tackling this on your white MY. I have an MSM MYLR that’s a few weeks away from being delivered and this will be one of the first things that I do to it.
Smart! I got it on before we started driving it daily. Glad I waited.
Great job! Your last video encouraged me to do my Y. I did upgrade to the full hood and did the mirrors and headlights also. Thanks!
Glad I could help! Nice work!
Thank you for all your videos. You have helped me decide on ordering a new Model Y.
So awesome, congrats!
I just did this today. Your videos were very helpful. I would definitely recommend a friend for the hood and front bumper. It didn’t turn out perfect, but thanks to your two videos I was able to avoid some of the issues you had on your first MY. Thanks BTG
So awesome to hear! Congrats and take price every time you look at the car!!
can you please share how many hours it takes to do this? thanks :)
@@rono33 I would plan on about 6
WOW! You are my freakin hero! I’m still suffering PTSD from trying to do my Model Y almost a year ago…
Hahahaha. I totally get it. Lol
I can totally agree after picking mine up I am going to want to protect the front and rear rockers.
Yep!
Thanks so much for doing this video. I want to do this for a long time. This is a big big help. Thanks again.
Cheers!
Thank you very much.
I am going to do it on the first week of the delivery. I hope xrel ships to Canada.
It does! Drive Protected Shop is in Canada!
Dude your so good at this DIY stuff! Wish I had a big enough garage to do this also. Appreciate all the vids hopefully it will help people out since the front end is rock chip city 😂
Rock chip city indeed! That is such a large painted surface exposed to so dang much!
Kudos to you for having the patience
Cheers!
@@BeardedTeslaGuy forgot to ask, did you clay the panels prior to the xpel?
Great job! Looks wonderful! I see you have some skills!
Thank you! Cheers!
I just did the doors on my Model 3 last week and I can just smell the baby soap and rubbing alcohol in the air as I watch this video! Thanks for sharing.
Hahahaha so true!
Outstanding job BTG :)
Cheers
Thank you for posting this. I am about to take delivery on a MY long range same color as yours. I will probably try this myself- I think I can… I think I can…
You can! Just watch a bazillion PPF install videos. The hardest part is the opening at the bottom of the car. I will be doing the model 3 here soon and will try to get more footage of that part of the install
Great job on this. I know they are a ton of work.
Cheers
Great job on that install.👍
Cheers
Thanks for the discount and DIY
You bet!
This video gave me the confidence to tackle this project on my own. My MYLR will be here in the next couple weeks and just ordered the full frontal package. Thanks bearded dude.
Best of luck! You can do it!
How did it go?
@@kylehill4437 OK. Not great but good enough to provide some protection for a few years LOL
@@b-gill9224 Thanks for the update. Something is definitely better than nothing. My Model 3 without PPF is painful and gross to remove bug splatter lol
Thank you for this video! and the discount code!
You are so welcome!
🙏🙏🙏 Thank you for the support!!
Thank you too!
Looks like that went down really well this time. I remember you struggled a lot last time. I bet if you had to do a 3rd it will go even better. It's all about practice. Looks hard but with the spray guns easy
Yea, indeed. Way smoother this time. Plus the lack of anxiety from not knowing what I was doing.
Good stuff , about to do my new 23’ y.
Thinking about doing my own cuts too
Yea, if you have the patients, it's well worth it! Thousands of dollars in savings.
I did that in two of my cars and it was tough! Those curves are so tricky, I had to use the knife just as you did. Not a professional job but it did protect the cars which was the ultimate goal.
Exactly
Great job
Cheers
Awesome job!!! I'm too much of a wussy to attempt this on my paint failing model 3 lol.
It’s not the easiest thing to do
Wow... you are now a pro now ... doing the 2nd time. Nice save on the left side!
Thanks 👍
@@BeardedTeslaGuy questions. seems like there is no holes for the sensors... is this not going to be an issue if the sensors need to be replace or fixed ?
ok, saw it... you got to use knife to cut it... that looks dangerous ;-)
Very Nice!
Cheers
I feel this is something I can tackle. It looks very forgiving,
You can, just have to have patients.
@@BeardedTeslaGuy so just pick up a couple from the hospital?
I did the paint protection film on the rear doors of my Model Y. It was such a PITA that I would never attempt this. I gladly paid to have someone do the first half. Great job though!
Yea, it takes some finesse lol
Looks like your review worked! So much traffic their website has TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES splashed across the main page with a note to call for a quote. Pay attention retailers and get the BTG bump!
haha, we literally crashed the website in an hour after video posted...
I would only buy if the price can be verified as the same as before the video
I am about to order the full front and attempt this myself. I have scheduled delivery 6/11 for my Model Y, and was originally planning to take it to a shop. Local shops are 2200 plus tax so hopefully can save some money or else about a 700 dollar screw up.
Just take your time, keep the material wet until you squeegee and be happy with an amateur install.
@@BeardedTeslaGuy thank you! You have convinced me that I can do it. Thank you for also helping me get a discount off my order.
FYI I live in Tampa FL and I brought my March 2021 Model Y Performance to Autopaintguard who charged me $1500 for a full front Expel PPF with a 10 year warranty. They also did a full body ceramic and tint on all windows except for the roof, for extra of course. But the PPF full front including number and mirrors were $1500 and they installed it perfectly! So I’m not really sure $1,795 is a great deal where you have to install it yourself. I didn’t get. My special deal either, that’s their standard quote for that car, and they have been around for over 20 years and do exotic cars every day. I know because every time I went there I saw Lambos, Ferraris, Corvettes, Tesla’s, etc.
Sounds like they got you set up nicely. Congrats
It’s $753
Hi love your videos. Can you tell us you mixture for the spays u used
Rear Panel Protection for Dark colors!!!! MY Blue was chipped first 500 Mi. of freeway driving!
It’s crazy. So worth protecting it
You actually made it look really diy possible. I’m super encouraged. How long does it last and is there a warranty?
Last for longer than you are going to own the car! There is a warranty on all Xpel product too
I had my previous 2019 model three standard range Plus expel applied in the front fenders, headlights,Hood and front bumper for $900 plus tax. Will be contacting him to do my 2021 model three long range that is on order once I get it
Nicely done
That’s not a bad price for a full frontal install. Where are you located ?
@@talhashahid5668 austin texas
Question how many xacto marks does this wrap cause? Been thru many window tints and seen many xacto cuts around the window.
Nice job, I dont know how u did that front piece by your self, I couldn't figure it out, for now I got the half hood on, half fenders ,mirrors and center part of front piece..
Patience. And a lot of it! Not the simplest piece to do that’s for sure
Great Video. You have motivated me to try this myself. I really wanted to save money by doing it myself. Thank you so much. BTW, What happened to your White MY ?
It sold so dang fast lol
@@BeardedTeslaGuy wow . Awesome ! Good to know . Congrats!
Agree about the encouraging part. I get my M3LR in November hopefully and I was ready to spend 1800 for a pro to install a full frontal package. Now I’m motivated to DIY for like ~$700-800. I’m completely ok if it looks “$1000 off good” LOL.
I’ve got a guy doing my entire front end for just under $1000. I had to book it way in advance, but xpel full frontal on a model y done for me for a grand is the best deal I’ve found anywhere. Already had the front door windows and the front windshield ceramic tinted. I’m on the fence about the wheels I’m going to buy but leaning towards a set of 20” BC Forged in Matte Black. 21’s are just to harsh on the ride quality.
Nicely done
That’s not a bad price. Where are you located?
I’ll be covering my car with Polish PPF. That’s a roll of heavy duty Saran Wrap.
Hahaha love it
watching this reminds me when i'm at the lake and see people on those rented pedal boats,, looks easy, looks fun, but not when i'm doing it.
hahahahahahahahaha
This is encouraging me to try it! That site won't work as far as searching for the xpel template to buy. Hopefully just a temporary problem.
It is a temporary issue. When the video went live, we crashed the site in an hour.
@@BeardedTeslaGuy Cool…I’ll check back periodically. Thx!
I can only afford one Tesla right now, and I’m 100% sure I’d angrily attack it with a baseball bat if a whole section got stuck to itself… so I’ll pay someone else who I can nit-pick! Kudos for the patience and perseverance!
Haha, nothing wrong with that!
Great job! Thanks for this video and tips! My husband and I are afraid of messing it up. How often do you recommend changing out the PPF and does it come off easily if we decide to remove it over time or does it affect the paint?
You don’t remove it. It’s a semi permanent layer. Removing it is very tricky once dry
Use a steamer to easy remove the ppf take to every corner of your car the paint so sensitive is possible to damage the paint.
I have been watching your videos for a while and like others mentioned, you are very informative. I bought many accessories you suggested and thanks to you, I did get the xpel kit with the 20% discount. I have a question for you. Why did you choose Xpel over your 3M Pro? In terms of cost i felt 3M is more competitive. Did you feel Xpel was worth it? I am going to install Xpel anyway as I bought it but couldn’t stop asking. :)
So I wanted to try it this time to see the difference. The Xpel was a lot more forgiving and easier to work with than the 3M. So with that, I got Xpel for the Model 3 as wel
When u pulled out that razor knife 😬😲
Hahaha. Just be VERY careful!
Thanks for all the help with prepping for delivery of my Tesla BTG! One question here, does the Xpel you mention in this video come from the drive protected site or do they use another type of PPF? If so is it similar to work with/protection/quality?
Xpel has put a stop to diy kits so drive protected has brought a new film with the same characteristics as Xpel. It’s still 8 mill thick, 10 year warranty. After installing both, this installed as easy as Xpel from my experience.
Great vid Justin! you got your winters still on? How did you like those Vteds? Am itching for anew set of Blizzaks on myMY
They are actually all season tires and they do great. Love these tires
It looks and sounds like a complete exercise in frustration trying to do this more or less perfectly, yet you still say that you are thrilled with the results. Is that because you REALLY like the idea of having protection against rock chips, or because it looks that good in spite of any remaining tiny imperfections, or all of the above?
Both! I think it turned out REALLY good, and of course the peace of mind with all the highway driving we do.
It appears that you cut out the sensors and tow eye. Do you reapply the cutout for the tow eye cover or does the kit provide one (looks like you peel back one for the tow eye cover). Are you using an Exacto knife for the cuts? Any concerns with damaging paint when cutting PPF?
You need to cut very carefully, no pressure. The tow hook has a small pice that goes over it after
Did the film come with the both solutions and the squeegee needed for the install? or did you have to buy those separate? I dont see the solutions listed on the drive protected site.
no it does not. In several of the vids, I explained the solution makeup. For Slip, fill a 32 oz bottle with distilled water, then a squirt of baby Johnson shampoo. For tack, it is 1 part alcohol to 9 parts distilled water.
Thank you for choosing XPEL! I just sent you an email - Michael from XPEL
Got it thanks!
Awesome video! I noticed that their kits don’t include the headlights. Do you think it’s not needed? Thanks for all your great videos!
I put them on my first Y, but not this one. Up to you, but I was worried that my lights were distorting and blinding people with the film
@@BeardedTeslaGuy interesting point!
The beard has good taste in beats!
😎
Great job, awesome video! How long will the discount code be available? Might be awhile before we can get it.
No expiration at the moment!
About how long did it take start to finish. Also, did you detail the vehicle prior to lock in the perfect finish? I’m debating just doing the front bumper area as that tends to get the most damage. I have a model X as well and wish I did that as the front bumper is all dinged up.
this was about 5 hours start to finish, including a wash first. Use dawn dish soap to wash it before applying, don't use anything infused with wax or other products.
hello, I just bought ppf @ you're link In Canada , did you cut the Tesla hood emblem afterwards?
It was precut in the pattern
Thank you BTG! I’m almost sold that I can pull this off myself. Just a quick question or a couple if I may. What is the exact proportion of the slip solution? And if for any reason I want to remove the wrap in the future, will it effect the paint?
Slip solution is 32 oz distilled water with a squirt of Johnson baby shampoo
@@BeardedTeslaGuy thank you BTG. Long time subscriber. Keep up the good work 👍
Hello BTG…. I’m sure by now you’ve figured out that I’m your #1 fun if you’re running those stats. Thanks for all the hard work…….. important question: I bought the full body PPF from drive protected per your recommendation. I started the install last night. Completed the hood and fenders. However I may have used too much dawn soap in my slip. I see a slight haze or possibly minor difference in the color of the hood vs the bumper. Can the wrap be removed and reinstalled ? My car colors are the same as yours cos it’s the best combo. Also wish we could communicate via calls if possible . Thanks 🙏🏽
Hmm, that’s doesn’t sound right but I suppose it’s possible. You can remove the film and the sooner the better if that’s what you are planning to do. I’d call Eric at drive protected shop first and get his opinion. It may be something simple like dry time.
I installed PPF from a different vendor and encountered a similar issue during my hood install. Give it time- at least for me, the PPF settled and the hazy spots disappeared after about 12 hours.
About to order this kit for my wife’s car. Thanks for the video and the discount code!
I want to do a full STEK Matte finish wrap but have a hard time spending $6500 to protect the whole car. All this time waiting for me delivery has me stacking up the things I want to do.
Yea, this is a way to do it for literally thousands less!
@@BeardedTeslaGuy I’m not sure I can do a full wrap in matte myself. If it goes wrong I messed it all up and will still pay someone to do it. For 6500 i could have the whole car painted after Several years if it took a beating. Having never done tint or film work I’m not sure I would tackle this. Does the kit you did wrap under the edges of panels or stop at the edge? Any of it peeling back yet
Im terrified of doing it myself lordt!
Hahaha
Im getting the Xpel front bumper for my upcoming Model 3. What none of these PPF videos ever show or talks about is the solution used. What is it? Does it come with the kit along with the scraper? This is useful information that always gets left out. Driveprotected doesnt even mention it on their website what the solution is or should be or if it comes with the kit or not.
Sorry, I did show the mixture and the process in our first PPF video. It’s a full bottle of distilled water with a squeeze of Johnson baby shampoo for the slick solution. The tack is 10% alcohol to 90% distilled water
Hello! I bought the full set to wrap my model Y. What are the other tools you’re using and the mixing ratio?
It’s just alcohol and distilled water for the tack solution and distilled water with drops of Johnson baby shampoo
Do you have to cut each parking sensor or is it pre cut? Sorry I couldn’t tell. Or do you not need to cut it and just apply the PPF over it?
This time I opted for the parking sensors to not be precut
I’m going to be doing this to my MY when I get it next month using your code (TY) but I also want to protect my windshield. I’m having a hard time finding anything for the MY though? What do you have/suggest? Thanks.
There is a film out there that can protect from rocks, just can’t remember what it is called
After the ppf film attaching, can you pressure wash the car? How do you wash the car afterwards? Thanks
yes of course.
Hi has BTG stopped selling XPEL Kits ? I see they have a different brand on their website now. Any idea where we can get the same XPEL kits ?
XPEL installers got together and put a stop to DIY kits being sold so had to switch brands
i watched you do your white car now this car. what you think is the difference as far as stretching goes? the Ebay one i had to force stretch . fitment was no good
The 3M one required way more stretching than this, it was also much less forgiving (overstretching)
what retractable sunroof shade do you recommand?i Look like there is only 2 company selling it.
I haven’t seen a retractable one but that sounds very interesting
how much alcohol you add to the tah mixture? What is the ratio ? I think I did not put enough alcohol so it was not work too well. thanks.
Alcohol mixture is 1 part alcohol, 10 parts distilled water.
I want to order the front bumper set. It asks me if I want, a single piece or multi-pieve bumper set. Which do you recommend?
I would highly recommend considering the multi piece front bumper. Install, after doing it like 4 times, takes me 4.5 hours with the 1 piece. It took me 1.5 hrs with the multi piece. Way easier.
@@BeardedTeslaGuy Appreciate it. That’s what I’ll do. And use your code!
just a quick question, the alcohol solution sprayed on top right?
Alcohol is for when you are ready to stick the film down. You spray it under the film, not on top
If doing the front end, what should be the first ‘’learning’’ most forgiving) panel? When do you use the ‘tax’ spray and is it necessary to cover 100% of the area between the film and the paint?
For the front end, start with the hood or the fenders. Do the bumper last. You will use the tack solution to make the film stick, so only once you have it in place and want it to stick. Usually only need to use it in the corners, or areas that are not staying down on their own.
@@BeardedTeslaGuy thx for the reply. My son, Brad, was the announced PPF winner the other day and he gifted it to me since he is already done. Then he got bumped on the recount. So I am on the fence of just doing the spray for the $140 or doing the front. I can't seem to find the order link for the pro total front. BTW I see cheaper priced on EBAY from the same company. I assume it is not the pro and is a less costly material, correct? Any chance of a better discount since we were the announced then rescinded winners?
I see P8204C-U
USD $854.95 plus $469 for the bumper $1324 x .80% $1060. I thought I saw it lower a few days ago.
Do you recommend to wash the car first before installing the PPF? Also, I only see you used one solution (soap + water) I guess. Not sure where you used the alcohol. I might miss it.
Also, would you share the ratio of the amount of soap and water?
Thank you in advance
Yes of course. Use dawn dish soap to clean with
Do I have to cut the ppf out from the cameras and parking sensirs?I saw you cut them out but put the parking sensor piece back on.
No, I just installed the tow hook hole cover piece on.
@@BeardedTeslaGuy so, just cover the cameras and sensor with the ppf. by thecway, driveprotected did not include the squeenee with my order and I have to get one myself.
Question: did you do ceramic coat on top of the PPF? Can you recommend mud flaps too? Thanks so much. Your video was very inspiring
Ceramic is coming. Mud flaps were in the red calipers video earlier this week. Really like them
Yes! Two coats of Gtechniq Halo on top of PPF.
Pro Tip…Put a light coat of wax on the paint before doing PPF, wipe the edges with alcohol. It helps with lift lines when repositioning the film. And easier removal in the future. For air bubbles use a syringe. And never use 3M film!!!

Can you do a video transferring my the lumbar support from your 2020 MY to your 2021? Looks pretty easy and I am doing it on mine via eBay. I cannot find a video on it and it would be nice to see…
Ha, didn’t even think about doing that…hmm
@@BeardedTeslaGuy I am seeing people at n forums and Facebook groups asking how to do it. There is a video on removing the back of the seat, but nothing on the lumbar install. Looks simple though based on those who have posted pics.
So… I did the lumbar install on my June build. Super easy!
I just got the ppf for the whole car from drive protected, when I install the front bumper, they did not car the circle for the tow hook and 4 sensors. Erictold me that I have to cut it myself. Can I leave the ppf on those censors without cutting it? thanks
You have to cut them out, it will interfere with the sensors if left on
This is disappointing to hear as in their own installation videos they say that the cutout for the sensor is important for making sure you have everything lined up correctly. In January they switch to their own in-house generic brand of PPF and no longer sell XPEL I wonder if there are other downsides as well. How did the installation go for you? I don't know if you've installed XPEL before but did you notice any difference with this new material?
Help me understand, as some who has only ever drive older already dinged up cars and trucks - is this PPF thing something people do to all high-end new cars, or it is specific to Tesla because of the issues with their paint quality?
It’s not a paint quality issue, it’s more of the fact that the front end of the car is a huge painted surface exposed to everything. Certainly the higher in price you go on a car the more prevalent PPF becomes, but it’s honestly that front bumper and shape of the car that makes it so exposed to chips
@@BeardedTeslaGuy Makes sense. Thanks for the detailed explanation!
Would you recommend a full car PPF or is the front end sufficient?
Awesome job sir! I think you've inspired me to give it a shot now. I do have a question though.. Do you think its easier to use a precut kit that have the sensor and toe hook holes already cut? Or the ones without the holes?
Great question. Having done both, here is my thoughts. The kit with holes precut is easy enough with alignment and keeps it going across the front bumper. The one without the holes cut is easier to install because you have more area for forgiveness in where the sensors are, but cutting them out isn’t clean
@@BeardedTeslaGuy I appreciate your response and ended up ordering a kit without the holes. Wish me luck and keep up with the great vids!
My grandmother used to put plastic on her couch and chairs. Same concept?
lol, not exactly
Is there an expiry on the discount code?
Nope
Should we replace these after a couple of years? I heard something like that
No! It’s rated for 10+ years of use
Do the sensors remain covered by the PPF?
No, I cut them out
How do you make the slip and tac solution?
Slip is distilled water with a squirt of Johnson baby shampoo. Tack is distilled water with isopropyl alcohol 10:1
Hi, great job on the install. what exactly did you use to prep the vehicle before installing. Like, what did you use to wash the vehicle before the install?
dawn dish soap, don't use any soap that has adders in it
Quick question. Do you know if drive protected shop does a deal for the complete car wrap on Black Friday? I’m going to be buying two sets and it’s just expensive.
They had an extra 5% last year so maybe again this year?
If you are buying 2 kits, just shoot Eric a note on his website with my discount code and ask if he would do the 5% boost he did last year for black friday
If you are buying 2 kits, just shoot Eric a note on his website with my discount code and ask if he would do the 5% boost he did last year for Black Friday
@@BeardedTeslaGuy Thank you so much!
@@BeardedTeslaGuy They're using a new brand named Defense+. Do you think its comparable to Xpel's quality/longevity?
how do you protect the windshied?
there is a product out there kind of like PPF. I don't know enough about it though.
Any reason why you had to cut out the film around the parking sensors?
I ordered it without the pre cut holes so I could lay the film more naturally. When the holes are pre cut it can make it just a little less forgiving because those holes have to line up
@@BeardedTeslaGuy Do you thinking leaving the PPF on the parking sensors will impact its function? Wondering if I can just leave the PPF on over the sensors...
How much should I expect to pay if I am having someone put the Xpel on the model Y. I'm in southern california.
Thousands
i am cool with a 10.00 bottle of touch up paint/ with clear and 5.00 worth of auto fine sandpaper then trading the car in within 3 years to upgrade but since you got the kit for free , i would have done this as well. But for almost 2k i find it over priced unless you live on a dirt road
It shouldn’t be a 2k kit
Does the PPF improve your resale value?
Not likely.
Is that permanent or can you peel it off later if you need to?
You can remove, but it’s quite a difficult thing to do
Great job bud, website is still down. 😞
Yea, we broke it with volume lol. I know they are working on it
Are you spraying the tack solution under the film or on top of the film?? Thanks
Under
Sometimes I add either tack or slip solution on top but it’s just for lubrication
@@BeardedTeslaGuy you’re the man! Thanks for the quick reply!
Always my pleasure!
Did you spray below and on top of the PPF?
Did you wash the car prior to the PPF install?
Washed the car with dawn dish soap before, spray on top and under the film. The spray on top is just to provide lubricity to the surface for squeegee
Noob question: in your experience, how does PPF behave with automatic car washes? A lot of conflicting info on the web on this...
PPF has held up great. You have to get a premium film with self healing properties and you're all set.
@@BeardedTeslaGuy Thanks! I assume the PPF kit you are referring to in this video adheres to the "premium and self-healing" standard? My Model Y is due to arrive in September, so I am overthinking and over-planning, as usual. :)
Yes! This is a self healing product. The other one is 3M pro series which also has self healing properties
