releasing Ms.Marvel, a geeky fangirl, during the height of tumblr’s heyday/just 2013 in general was such a smart writing move. it’s no wonder that her first run was so popular. it makes so much sense for the world we live in now with social media that there would be people like that in the marvel universe. i’ve always liked that about her character

I love Carol as Captain Marvel, but recently, when I was re-reading a lot of Carol stuff, I realized that she was a much better character before she became Captain Marvel. She used to be a B-list character, meaning that she could have funny filler arcs and adventures that someone like Captain America couldn't. Being a B-list character also meant that she could have more nuanced struggles that all the A-list superheroes don't always have. But, as soon as took on the mantle Captain Marvel, and became A-list, all the old stuff went down the drain. Like her alcoholism and fear that nobody would like her if she didn't have superpowers. I haven't seen that referenced in years.

Yeah, I read her a lot back in the early Ms. Marvel days and she was generally a good read back then. Pretty basic superhero shenanigans with the occasional deeper story (especially in the 80s). More social consciousness about women's rights than other books, but never to the point where it felt like it was her sole reason for existing. As Captain Marvel some of the charm is gone along with the lighter tone of the 70s. So serious these days, at least what I've seen of her.

Although I may be biased, I have a soft spot for "stretchy/morpher" supers in general, they give the artist so much room to get creative and they're usually written to be more upbeat than man supers.
Except that joyless insufferable jerk Reed Richards. The man does not belong in the same club as Kamala and Ralph and Patrick and Luffy and even Jimmy, slightly lame as he is. Rather obviously, Catholicism isn't demonized by bigots nearly as much as Islam is.
Which I find quite amusing, because if you actually listen to what a lot of the Fundamentalists think about the subject, the Pope is Satan's lapdog and "mislead" Christians are worse than heathens. They're kind of careful not to talk about it too loudly in public, but I got forced into attending Fundy bible studies with some of these loons and when they think they're preaching to the choir the anti-Catholic and anti-Semitic rhetoric is on full display. Used to be much more of a mainstream attitude too, and not all that long ago - JFK caused great concern in the country when he was elected because some people were afraid a Catholic president would put Rome's interests ahead of those of the US.

Like Miles Morales for example, he's your average kid growing up in a hectic city, has personal issues at home, viewed his power as a curse rather than a blessing until later learning it's not what you want to do but have to do, he just happens to be black. Yes I know he's mixed but you get my point.

The problem is that kind of limits the amounts of stories you can actually tell. There are tons of interesting stories specifically about queerness or race tahat by definition can't be universally relatable because some people don't experience it.

@@ravenfrancis1476 I get what you're staying but I think you misunderstood my point. My point is write an interesting character and make them relatable then you can add the toppings later. Deadpool is a good example of this. He's pansexual but that single characteristic doesn't define him as a character it adds to him. Loki also applies to this. In lore and in the MCU/TV series it's said he's slept with animals, other entities, male, female, he's very much genderfluid but again he's more of than just that.
Going to sounds like a broken record here, sorry. But a character should be the sum of their parts not just one defining characteristic.

@@cuzzbaby I mean, on some level you're not wrong. But people's identities do play an important part in shaping who they are as a person. Unless they're in a world that's, like, a hyper-progressive utopia if they're a minority that's going to significantly impact their lives in ways I don't really think people who aren't minorities can't really conceptualize. Like, a lot of my interactions with people have been colored by the fact I'm an autistic bisexual trans woman. I'm going to have a different experience in most environments than a neurotypical cisgender heterosexual person.
I also think if you're going to use examples of 'good representation' you shouldn't use examples the community they're supposed to be representing are fairly consistently disappointed in. Loki's bisexuality was only mentioned in a single throwaway line, and the writer had to fight to get that in (the writer that fought to include it is also conveniently the only writer not returning for season 2) and Loki's genderfluidity was functionally erased by all the other Loki's reacting as if a woman Loki was significant enough to warrant confusion, and the writer angrily dismissed genderfluid people who called him put on it.
Deadpool is a bit better, admittedly, but not by much. Not only does he play into the "pansexual people are sex crazed maniacs that'll fuck anything that moves" stereotype, but his attraction to men is pretty consistently played as a joke in ways his attraction to women just...isn't. And there's all the problems with Deadpool 2's representation like reducing Negasonic and Yukio to background characters that don't do anything, and violently killing off one of the first openly gay X-Men from the comics within five minutes of his first appearance by dropping a helicopter on him..

I got into comics in 2014 too because of my college’s comic book club. It was a goddamn golden age, especially for new readers
Could you do something on the recent Disney shows, please? Moon Knight and Judaism, Ms. Marvel’s powers, and She Hulk’s cg?
