    I want to clarify that I did a country accent for Chris Kyle because that's what he sounds like. I thought that by doing a voice, it would add production value. I brought Mattie on board because I was worried that doing a voice for Kyle and not Gerry Conway would make it look like I'm trying to make Kyle look bad. I think it's collaboration ended up separating the two main voices in the long quotes and is the best way I could have handled the video.

      I also want to give a big thank you to the positive reception this video has received. I was worried about making a video that was a lot more overtly political than my normal content. I lost quite a few subscribers, but the positive comments (especially those from those in law enforcement and the military) confirm that this was a video worth making. I especially want to thank my new supporters on Patreon after this was made. You guys make this operation possible and I hope that my continued content is something worth your pledges.

      Comic Drake I’d be interested in an Punisher elseworld where he goes after infamous serial killers like Zodiac, Manson, Jack the Ripper, etc. I mean he’s going to low life mobsters(who aren’t the worst) to Supervillains. Those types of villains aren’t shown much and those are the types of villains Punisher was meant to fight(pure evil people who get away with their actions) and if that means there wouldn’t be any story then make it a short else-world mini series.

    Punisher is a marine who killed members of his own unit because they were (among other things) killing enemy civilians. You don't think he would go after cops who were killing American civilians and getting away with it? Criminals who harm innocent civilians and are not punished by the system are exactly what he goes after, and uniforms do not stop him.

The Punisher retaliates by torturing and killing the cop responsible. This makes the NYPD come down on him and after being nearly killed multiple times by the NYPD, he stops pulling his punches and starts killing cops.

It's bad enough that many blacks see that black and blue flag as a symbol of lowkey racism(as it undermines the whole black lives matter movement by insinuating that cops are being killed without recieving justice), but when you see actual law enforcement morph that into a punisher skull it takes on a whole new meaning. It says a lot about where the mentality of this country is headed in the future.

    When the Punisher kills someone in comics we have already seen in the issue with our own eyes that the guy he killed is a bad guy. He is protected by the writers from making mistakes.
    When a cop kills someone we find out after the fact that the victim might have possessed a small amount of drugs, had a bad driving record, or was a former criminal that had done their time. (Or they might literally be a paramedic that was sleeping because they were overworked in the greatest medical crisis in a century.) They scramble after the fact to justify murdering a person that might have made some mistakes and deserved their time in court.
    There's a reason why one is a fantasy and the other has thousands of non criminals standing up to have cops face justice.

For some people it is like you said, a fantasy, but for others it is a symbol of a murderer taking out who he thinks are the bad guys (and existing in fiction the Punisher is almost infallible on who he targets). I think that's one thing everyone should understand when discussing this topic instead of assigning their definition of the symbol to everyone else's beliefs.

      @LupineShadowOmega Před 5 lety +6

      My issue is the idea of that fantasy. It hinges on the idea that the system doesn't work and that the only way to do anything meaningful is to do it outside of said system. And that's a weird fantasy for someone that is a part of the system to have. It says in part that you don't believe in what you do. It says that the rules are only there to be broken instead of being there to remind us what we should be doing. I get it as escapism sure, but I don't get it embraced by people that are the system. It just does not really compute.
      And yeah, no one goes after serial killers...tell it to the FBI agents that are risking their lives doing that every day. How do you figure these guys are getting into prison? They don't volunteer.
      See, I was replying to your first comment and then I see your second. Sheep, huh. It must be really comforting in your "only I'm a person with thoughts and feelings bubble" people are out risking their lives all day everyday in this world, and most of them are doing it while following the rules. Be they rules of engagement, civil rights, malpractice laws, etc. And they do it in that fashion because the rules exist within a society to protect people and provide justice and not some bullshit emotional justice but the hopefully factual kind (hopefully, because no system comprised of people is perfect). You know outside of revenge. An Anti-hero like the Punisher wouldn't exist, because he'd be a freaking criminal and despite whatever good he might be doing, he'd equally be endangering the lives of the innocent and putting his boot squarely upon the neck of people's civil liberties, things that people in this country have fought and died for in this country for generations almost without end.

    @TheRightHandofDoom Před 5 lety +81

    I think one of the appeals of The Punisher is the fact that people do feel that the system fails, letting perceived or known bad people escape some form of justice. For me as a long time fan of the punisher comics, the one I always tell people to read is "The Slavers" because it shines a light on one of the most disturbing industries that people ignore; human trafficking. In the book there ends up being a sort of catharsis that arises from seeing these villains torn to shreds for all the harm they do to people. It's a visceral, almost primal, sort of feeling. However, I agree with you that it's just fantasy and it's a way of expressing disillusionment or frustration with a system that often may feel broken to some. However, as you pointed out, people who see the Skull often assign their own meaning, and the fact that most want to put fear into their "enemy" is concerning because it dehumanizes the individuals on the other side of a conflict. While in the military this mentality makes sense, it makes much less sense and becomes incredibly problematic if the people vowing to protect and serve the community take on the Punisher Skull because citizens shouldn't be "the enemy." Yes, violence occurs and can escalate on either side, but the fact that fewer and fewer people are trusting of the police means the adoption of the Skull puts cops at odds with the people they are meant to serve. I know this is a long post, but as a fan I wanted to weigh in because your video was very well thought out and I appreciate the time you took to address this rising issue; especially because it's one that isn't in most people's perception.

    This is why I believe Jon Betrothal's role as The Punisher is the best, I think if people support The Punisher as much as I have seen, then I hope its enough to avoid its cancellation. The show does enough to equalise opinions, they acknowledge that what he does is wrong and its a constant reminder, but at the same time you understand it (or atleast I do). The Punisher respects what Daredevil does, that he wont take a life no matter how bad, Daredevil understands where Frank is coming from. The Punisher doesn't back anyone but himself, he see's wrong he takes a stand, no matter what side your on. He may respect your duty, he may understand your pain, but don't think for a second he wont put you to the ground if you step out of line. The former soldiers who sided with Billy in season 2 should be a prime example of that, so should Lewis Wallcott in season 1. All I hope for is this show not to be cancelled, but if Jon is at peace with whatever decision made, then all I can say is I am so glad someone did The Punisher "Justice".

    I've always found it amusing that Gerry Conway doesn't understand the appeal of the character he created. He intended the Punisher to be a villain, but it came out during the 1970's crime wave when support for the death penalty skyrocketed from less than 40% to over 80%. Punisher, Death Wish, Dirty Harry - these works of fiction resonated with the people.

    When it comes to this the police and military’s obsession with the Punisher I’m reminded of this quote from the Dark Knight Returns, “You say you answer to some sort of authority. They only want me dead because I'm an embarrassment. Because I do what they can't. What kind of authority is that?”

  • @ohitsthatguy8079

    Frank Castle is a fascinating character especially in stories like Marvel Knights and Punisher black but, he is not a hero. Never was never will be. He believes there is no redemption. There is no trial. There is no escape. He is terrifying as an idea.

  • @dahwriter
    @dahwriter Před 3 lety +3

    If The Punisher used magic powers, or some kind of superhuman energy ray, etc., as his means of dispensing justice and destroying bad guys, police officers and military personnel would never use the logo. The only reason why, mostly, as I would hazard a guess to, is because The Punisher uses firearms. As basic as that sounds, it's likely the main reason. The skull is just a cherry on top, as it could have been a crossed out smiley face, and LE and military would have used that instead.

    as a person of color who grew up wittnessing police brutality and harrassed by cops, this is very scary. but as someone who loves and admires frank castle as a morally ambiguous antihero, i think it's hilarious because if he were real he would kill corrupt cops without hesitation. also if i remember right, frank isn't a big fan of cops or the justice system. he wouldn't be a vigilante if he had faith in them and he would probably feel the same level of discomfort as us if he saw them using his logo and lauding his tactics which he himself acknowledges are extreme and illegal. the cops who are adopting his methods would canonically be villains in the marvel universe.

      Erik Jones Exactly, if Frank were real, he would be killing cops too, corrupt cops but still cops. It’s scary to know that the “I want to be a gun toting badass” mentality has overshadowed “to serve and protect” by some law enforcement.

    I don't understand why they didn't go with a more fitting hero in Captain America or someone of his standing. Cap is a mostly law abiding man fighting for the little guy, the same thing as police officers. Plus caps logo already works well with the Blue Line's color scheme.

    There were a MULTITUDE of problems with the Secret Empire event, and I'm not here to defend. But there was 1 creative choice I especially like: Punisher joined Hydra when they promised a totalitarian state that would crack down on crime. That fits his mentality. I don't know if they backpedaled on that with his characterization after the event, but I still like that detail.

  • @jamincuyle8053

    In my opinion, The Punisher logo makes sense being used specifically in military special forces, like the Navy SEALS, or maybe even the Marines considering Frank himself was a Marine. Specifically, I don't see a problem with the punisher logo being used with "terrorist killers" the people that hunt down people like Osama bin laden, Saddam Hussein etc. Because it invokes fear in the enemy, it makes sense to me that Chris Kyle would use the logo considering what they did, and I don't really personally see a problem with it. That being said, the police should not be using such a logo. Frank Castle kills criminals. He kills criminals that need to die, he kills human traffickers, pedophiles, mafia members. Real life police are killing innocent civilians, these people don't deserve to die. If anything the police should use the Captain America shield as their logo, the police are supposed to protect the innocent, protect and serve. I find that to be a completely different job than being a marine or a special forces soldier, the police are supposed to keep us safe from each other, the Marines and SEALS are supposed to keep us safe from terrorists.

    The Punisher always respected the police, it was the dishonest cops that he would go to war with. I remember some comics from the 90's where Castle was pinned down by the police and he surrendered to them rather than fight even though he knew he could win.

    The logo represents a failure of the policing system. Displaying it on a cop car essentially admits that the system they represent is broken and they will break the law possibly beating you and or killing you to get the job done. This is not what modern law enforcement should be about and that mindset is not only misguided but the opposite of the American ideal. not only a bad ideal but also very dangerous for an average citizen who doesn't want to live in nazi America and doesn't want to be oppressed by their so called protectors or shot or beaten to death for having an unpopular opinion.

      Jacob Sanford I’d be interested in an Punisher elseworld where he goes after infamous serial killers like Zodiac, Manson, Jack the Ripper, etc.
