This is terrifying. The performance is so offputting, the power and conviction in her voice with that mad look in her eyes. Nothing compares to Patti LuPone.
That last note: straight tone belt (essentially a yell) until she releases into that beautiful vibrato... flawless! I've listened to it a hundred times!
Abraham, I have listened to this many many times and am amazed each timeas though it was the first! Such power and control! Belt on girl and blow the roof off the auditorium!!
Joyce Baskind Many people grew up hearing this as an uplifting, inspirational athem. it was used to sell soap, juice, vacations, etc. in context..it's kinda of horrifying, lol.
@@barbraseville8984 I thought that same thing for “as long as he needs me” from Oliver. I sing this song at karaoke, to all my friends. “You’re so great! Great things are coming!” I hope they never see this version. 🤣
Patti Lupone is royalty. But, check out Jennifer Holliday's original broadway cast performance at the Tony's. She received applause three times during that performance and a fast standing "O."
I had known this song for years without knowing anything about the show, and thought it was an inspirational, upbeat number. Then I saw the musical, and realized it’s terrifying. What genius.
In my opinion, she is the best Rose of all the others!I watch this performance all of the time. This is perfection...the voice, the acting and the casting. Patti Lupone was Rose!
Yes but she couldn't grasp the depth of this character. She was way too optimistic and happy go lucky. Rather than a woman at the end of her rope, trying desperately to hold onto a dream.
No, she's better. Bernadette is a great star but she's too sexy for Rose. Staunton is a great actress but the score dominates her as she doesn't have the chops. Patti kills it musically and has the grit to play an ordinary mother. She's perfect casting really. Shout out to Tyne Daly who comes a close second.
Call me crazy, but my fav acting part of this number is the terrified looks from Laura Benanti. Just the sheer terror of Mama June coming unhinged. Gives me chills.
You’re right on the money! Patti is a star, but what’s easily overlooked is how much of an ensemble player she is. She’s made better by Boyd and Laura, which is why she insisted they be part of this. They’re such good actors and bring out the star in her.
To add to that point of view, when the audience stands up and claps, you can hear here insisting her fellow players bow with her. That’s generous and sharing, not diva behavior.
That last note though...that WHOLE PERFORMANCE though. Wow, I don't believe any other person who has played this role can tough Patti's performance. She IS Mama Rose, and gives her a welcome psychotic edge. Just brilliant
For those of of you who are trying to make it in this biz and looking for an example of an artist, Patti Lupone is it. Not only is she extremely talented singer but her acting is bar none. The detail and attention in every intention/objective in this performance is amazing!
Born to play Mama Rose... perfection! I saw her sing this at City Center before moving to Broadway and I knew she would win the Tony... if moved to Broadway. So happy she won. She should have won for Anything Goes as well... imo...
I love how scared the two of them are as Rose goes on her tirade. I think a part of Louise might be appreciative of her mother's attention but she knows it is more about her mother's longing for attention than for her.
Got to see Patti LuPone 3 times as Rose. What an experience. Her voice is truly remarkable. Much as I liked Tyne Daly, who was very good, LuPone killed it.
When you witness Patti's amazing performance and you hear the continuous roar of the crowd and you see the standing ovatio given to her by the theatre community, you know you've got yourself a legend.
I loved it. And I LOVED her acceptance speech! She's such a diva, but she totally earns it. I was priviledged enough to see the show in the front row and her performance is incredible. One of the greatest Rose's ever.
I'm not a huge Patti LuPone fan and a few changes they made to the book (Specifically taking out the "Small World" reprise) that I didn't like, but Patti LuPone was absolutely amazing in this role! She showed so much emotion and her Rose's Turn is absolutely haunting.
Pauly- Walnuts you said nothing about her thats the point. Its always Patti not Boyd or Laura that people mention but they are rboth really good in this.
this is superb, lupone at her best, but for the few lucky ones of us who got to see her as norma in sunset boulevard, that was something to see. still scratching my head as to why glenn is getting the movie and not patti. glenn is a fantastic actress and well deserving of her overdue oscar, but this role requires pipes and glenn can not sing. patti was so amazing in the role, and should be doing to the film. she was, as always, perfection. mystery!!!!
I mean how could anyone not like Patti? She is truly, simply, one of Broadways extreme best. A Legend. This show has had its many runs, stars, but when Lupone stars, you just know its going to be exceptional. This did not disappoint. Would love to see her live.
Wow. A Masterclass in bringing great acting into perfect singing, thus delivering a perfect brilliant performance for the ages. Just brilliant from start to finish.
!!!!!! I love the use of images that she employs in her acting, her beautiful vibrato and stunning tone match her acting chops. The reason her performance is so fabulous is because it's equal in singing AND acting, not one or the other being superior. A beautiful performance!!!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this rendition. and I have no shame in saying that in almost everything else i love Bernadette's version (her vulnerability in Rose's Turn) But just the pure vocal power of this rendition is drool worthy
I can’t stand Patti Lupone most of the time, but this is one of the greatest performances EVER! I can’t listen to anyone else sing it now. She was made to sing this!
I saw Patti sing this song in concert last weekend. Her live performance exceeded my wildest expectations. I have had the privilege of seeing some of the greats sing live, and Patti is at the top of my list. Her combination of charisma, vocal styling and pure star quality is unparalleled. She is an incredible artist. If you ever have the chance to see her sing live, don't pass it up!
Ms. LuPone sure knows how to bring an audience on their feet! I actually never saw Gypsy before but I love the song and she did a lovely job with it. Patti better be on the watch when Barbra Streisand bids farewell to the movie musical genre with her upcoming turn as Mama Rose. PS Laura Benanti was beautiful as Elsa in The Sound of Music Live three years ago.
She's a B'way composer's dream come true - incredible vocal clarity and she owns the role and the stage. The performance of a lifetime - hers and ours!
She is amazing! I respect her so much for her resilience, her intelligence, her honesty, her acting abilities and for that incredible voice!! She is one in a million!
I never get tired of seeing this, her greatest performance EVER live. Phenomenal, Electrifying. Even Liza, a superstar and icon in her own right, was thrilled beyond measure.
The waves of shivers running through my spine throughout that performance until that last note....thought I was going to faint...wow, just wow. There's a reason why she's Patti Lupone.
These lyrics are amazing. The irony of “sunshine and lollipops” in the psychotic break are amazing. And Patti delivers the incredible power and ironic “optimism”. It’s like watching a horror movie! Guys, this is what musical theater can do that no other medium can do.
I love her last "we got nothing to HIT but the heights" at 3:10 You can feel her desperation and uncertainty behind all of this. She's lost and hurt, and it's beautifully performed and shown from there to the end
Saw the magnificent Merman in the original company as well as the Patti LuPone production. Patti matches the brilliance of the original Rose with an extraordinary, absolutely perfect performance. Both for me were unforgettable experiences.
Patti LuPone is a Broadway legend and a wonderful actress as proved by this video. She doesn't always pick the right roles (cough...Mrs. Lovett) but she's a phenomonal woman.
Exactly, silverspringsrr. The ovation wasn't for love or nostalgia for the play, it was an acknowledgment of the performance people there were witnessing. The "Rent" reunion could have merited a standing ovation, but those folks coasted. Patti (and Boyd and Laura) held nothing back. I had the pleasure of great seats at the Wednesday matinee of "Gypsy" just prior to the Tonys, and I'll agree that even this video pales to being there.
I saw this on the 3rd of september, and it was probably the best thing I'm ever gonna see. She was awarded with a standing ovation after roses's turn, and people went absolutely mad. I don't care who is the best Mama Rose, but this sure as hell was the biggest experience of my life, and for a lot of the people in the audience:)
+xColmGx She voiced her first animation character on a show called Steven Universe. The character is Yellow Diamond, lol. She's totally awesome! Both Patti and the character, of course :P
I saw Gypsy last week - I have seen dozens of performances on Broadway, and Patty Lupone's was the best performance I have ever seen. She owned the stage. This is a must see.
Just saw this last night -- third row -- close enough to see the pores on Patti's face. This video is great, but man, it's in a whole other stratosphere when you see it live. From beginning to end these three -- Patti, Boyd Gaines and Laura Benanti -- have the most remarkable and moving chemistry. Everyone's got their own opinion about actors, perhaps especially about "divas" like Ms. LuPone. But, goddamn, she knows how to brings down the house. Thanks for a great show you guys!
This is terrifying. The performance is so offputting, the power and conviction in her voice with that mad look in her eyes. Nothing compares to Patti LuPone.
If is possible for someone to have a voice that matches their personal looks, she has it.
Seeing Liza Minnelli looking around and the end like “DID YOU SEE THAT?!?” Makes me so happy lol
Patty LuPone makes one terrifying mama Rose!
Joyce Baskind Many people grew up hearing this as an uplifting, inspirational athem. it was used to sell soap, juice, vacations, etc.
in context..it's kinda of horrifying, lol.
Joyce Baskind she makes a terrifying everything.
@@barbraseville8984 I thought that same thing for “as long as he needs me” from Oliver. I sing this song at karaoke, to all my friends. “You’re so great! Great things are coming!” I hope they never see this version. 🤣
Literally the fastest standing O and the loudest applause at the Tony’s ever
Hayden Anderson Up until Cynthia Erivo
Patti Lupone is royalty. But, check out Jennifer Holliday's original broadway cast performance at the Tony's. She received applause three times during that performance and a fast standing "O."
Billy Porters Tony Karaoke got her beat for fastest standing O for this song
I had known this song for years without knowing anything about the show, and thought it was an inspirational, upbeat number. Then I saw the musical, and realized it’s terrifying. What genius.
The scene is like a psychotic break. Fantastic!
Wow. She actually is the best Mama Rose...
Ethel created the role in 1959, but Patti owned it 50 years later. A performance that will be remembered forever.
Ethel owns the role, period.
Angela and Imelda owned it as well.
That's Theater. That's Magic.
+Rcity2332 That's Entertainment
When she starts in with "I had a dream..." and everyone started applauding, GOD I felt that!
In my opinion, she is the best Rose of all the others!I watch this performance all of the time. This is perfection...the voice, the acting and the casting. Patti Lupone was Rose!
+Charles N. I love her too. Always have. But, come on, no one has Ethel Merman's pipes. There really is no comparison.
Yes but she couldn't grasp the depth of this character. She was way too optimistic and happy go lucky. Rather than a woman at the end of her rope, trying desperately to hold onto a dream.
She's good, but she's not Bernadette Peters or Imelda Staunton
No, she's better. Bernadette is a great star but she's too sexy for Rose. Staunton is a great actress but the score dominates her as she doesn't have the chops. Patti kills it musically and has the grit to play an ordinary mother. She's perfect casting really. Shout out to Tyne Daly who comes a close second.
Michael Donoue if you don't think Imelda can't handle the performance then you must have not seen her live
Call me crazy, but my fav acting part of this number is the terrified looks from Laura Benanti. Just the sheer terror of Mama June coming unhinged. Gives me chills.

Rose... but the sentiment is there
She blew it out of the water. I love the contrast of her turmoil as she rips up the letter while singing, "bright lights and lollipops."
nothing is cooler than seeing mandy patinkin cheer her on!
gtwin93 he's such a classy legend
This was Boyd Gaines. He won the Tony for this performance.
HOLY SHIT I'm speechless she's perfect
That last note though...that WHOLE PERFORMANCE though. Wow, I don't believe any other person who has played this role can tough Patti's performance. She IS Mama Rose, and gives her a welcome psychotic edge. Just brilliant

i am giving her a standing ovation.... while i am alone in my bedroom.
When people tell me they don’t like musical theater... wtf??!!
Steven Kyle THANK YOU!!!!
Omg ikr
The Tony Audience hadn't reacted that way since Jennifer Holliday back in 82
I always felt like they didn't react enough for Jennifer honestly lol
Born to play Mama Rose... perfection! I saw her sing this at City Center before moving to Broadway and I knew she would win the Tony... if moved to Broadway. So happy she won. She should have won for Anything Goes as well... imo...
I've seen Tyne Daly, Bernadette Peters and Patti Lupone do this role on Broadway. Patti wins hands down!
Why is she so perfect
what. a. star. she's more than a star. she is truly legendary.
I love how scared the two of them are as Rose goes on her tirade. I think a part of Louise might be appreciative of her mother's attention but she knows it is more about her mother's longing for attention than for her.

she is so fucking talented omg
Two words: Standing Ovation.

I love how at the end you can hear Patti coaching Laura for the standing o. “Take a bow, take a bow!”
Probably the best performance and revival I've ever seen. I had to see it twice. It closed way too soon.

STANDING OVATION

Patti is literally perfect for this role
Holy freaking hell! I saw her do this live in 2007 and never thought I'd experience it again. Thanks for sharing
Lucky you got to see live
I watch this over and over again.
Patti LuPone is awesome in everything she does, from Eva Peron to Mama Rose!!
The waves of shivers running through my spine throughout that performance until that last note....thought I was going to faint...wow, just wow. There's a reason why she's Patti Lupone.
I wish I could harness the power of her voice. That last note is incredible.
She's astonishing, and she certainly deserved that award.
Patti Lupone is a naturalistic actress who is stuck in character every second. More conviction is not possible, plus this foghorn of a voice.
I've lost count of how many times I've played this clip. I LOVE it!
One of the greatest Broadway performers in one of the greatest musicals ever written. Does it get any better than this ?! A Tour de force !!
I just love how she drops her hands after the final note like, “it’s over.”
OMG! I literally get chills when she sings the last "for me and for you"
Shivers. And just brings tears to my eyes with the perfection.

Christ, it just blows your mind. When I need to feel good about humanity, talent like this is what sustains me.
This woman is beyond genius. 😍

I think the most chill part of this whole thing is seeing a Broadway star getting a standing ovation from a sea of Broadway stars.
Still gives me chills just as much as when I saw it live for the first time.

damn right patti lupone gets a standing o at the Tony’s
saw her in Gypsy on Broadway and it was the first time I've ever seen someone get a standing ovation in the MIDDLE of a show before, she was amazing!
Wow!!! Just wow!!!!
Patti is fantastic, both as an actress and singer. Saw her in an intimate show in Toronto last year...wow! This is real talent people.
anybody here crying like me?? rest in peace Mr. Sondheim
This is one of the GREATEST performances of "COMING UP ROSES" ... EVER!!! ... Patti knocks it out of the park and the city!!! WOW!!! 💞👍💞👏💞
Goshhh this inspires me soooooo much i love Her!
The voice of Yellow Diamond and she is a killer
What's with calling her Yellow Diamond? Lol
+xColmGx She voiced her first animation character on a show called Steven Universe. The character is Yellow Diamond, lol. She's totally awesome! Both Patti and the character, of course :P
Check "Message Received", her voice is on it
What a performance!!! She had the gods and goddesses of Theatre on their feet, open mouthed, like children, enraptured. To bring such joy, j'adore!
Steven Universe has made me a Broadway geek.
You too?!
lol me to a little
Nice 😆
Duckie bee ikr
Same ! Now I can't shut up when I am home alone x)
I saw Gypsy last week - I have seen dozens of performances on Broadway, and Patty Lupone's was the best performance I have ever seen. She owned the stage. This is a must see.
She is an atomic powerhouse! I'm currently reading her memoirs.

That is BROADWAY at it's BEST!
right when she started singing chills came and never left
SHE IS MY IDOL!!! i love her she is amazing!!! I call her the Queen of Broadway
